Starboard Noserider
« on: March 02, 2012, 12:07:43 PM »
Hey, anyone out there tried the Starboard nose-rider? 10' X 30" 166 liters. I would like to know if that board cruises well or is just a longboard with a paddle I weigh 170 lbs. Also I would love to demo one if I could find one around here to try Cambria, Morro Bay, or Pismo. Or does anyone out there have a used one you want to sell.

Have not surfed one yet - but have paddled in a bit on flat water.
I am 200 lbs - so it was a bit small for me as a cruiser.

I also highly doubt that there will be used ones yet - as it is just hitting stores.
Easy Rider is the name of my store in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
My name is Warren Currie . . . and we SUP Surf indoors . . . in a shopping mall!

They definitely look a nice shape i just wish Starboard made a smaller one - around 9' - 9'4 would be nice

I am still disapointed that Surftech superseded the 9'8" Takayma model.  It looked like.a real longborders SUP.   Still, I have heard that the 11' Takayama rides shorter than it's length?

I have rode the Starboard noserider and it was not too bad.  Maybe it could be slightly.more refined?  What also gets me is that every board in their range are rounded pintails.  I preffer a squaretail like a classic mal for traditional brake turns and stalls.

I am wondering too what the new Surftech Laird Pearson Arrow is like as a noserider?  After seeing that vid of him doing 360s off the nose on similar I am guessing it would not be bad?

I have the Pearson Laird Surftech 10'6".  I think it noserides very well.  I've yet to do a 360 but I'm surfing it as a single fin and I get to the nose often.  Its pin tail makes it turn in the surf like a dream but it also makes it a bit tippy.

I noted that the new Starboard Noserider looks very similar to the Laird - big trash can noses and pin tails.  However, I think the Starboard is likely to be more stable, but might not surf as well.  -- At 30" wide the Starboard 10' is slightly wider than my Laird 10'6"....it also has more volume at 166 versus 154 liters.  That was for the Laird 10'6" - the Laird 10' is like 28.5" and 132 liters (something like that) which makes the Starboard noticeably larger.  I haven't surfed the Laird 10' - I think it would be very tippy for me but I think the Starboard might fit the bill for a slightly smaller board.

While I really like my Pearson Laird....a bit more volume in the tail might be nicer for takeoffs in mushy surf.

I do hope I get a chance to demo the Starboard some day.

Hea Carl, welcome to the Zooooooone, my buddy Brad here in Cambria, has a 10-3 x 29 1/2 Mahalo (Wardog's store brand) that he said he may be willing to sell.  He loves the board but he goes thru boards like I go thru underwear, and it's in almost perfect shape.

I tried the Laird 10-6 and I own the SB NR and, for a fact, the SB is more stable.  Does it noseride the same or better?  Dunno.  I haven't gotten it out in any suitable waves.  And, with shoulder surgery coming up on Friday, I won't be for a few months yet.  Sigh.

Litner,

Hopefully the shoulder surgery isn't related to SUP.

Hope all goes well.

Good call for Carl Greg,
The Mahalo is not a nose rider per se...but, if you know how to nose ride you can get up there for some glides...

Does anyone have any more pics of the Starboard Noserider? Would love to hear more reports on it as well, seems as though most people riding it haven't had too much nose time yet.

yup, sadly it is: a biceps tendon rupture.  did it two years ago, have been getting by with a quarterly cortisone shot, but it's time to get it patched up right.

Yesterdays session results:
Fast peeling waves made tip rides easy and loooooooooong. It was easy to get carried away and just stay on the nose and outrun the wave.
With the straight rocker line trimming forward makes the board fast down the line.
Fun board .I  think if you're looking for alot of tip time this boards the one .Have you seen the size of the nose concave ?It's two and a half feet long and like an inch and a half deep!
like my Hobie Noserider from 1967 !
