vid of six man canoe race start
« on: March 08, 2012, 06:51:10 PM »
It isn't always blue skies and perfect wind here.  Pono and I watched from up top of the cliff above the gulch.  Not even a fantasy was entertained about wanting to be out there.  Misery incorporated.  I was shaking like a leaf with two long sleeves and my snowboard beanie.  Bill had a cool car race jacket that was apropos  to the race theme of the day.  That cloud deck in the last pic is where they were headed....

Thanks for the vid HM.

Facebook has a few cool pics of the boys near the cliffs up north.

Plenty of hard bark on those paddlers, that's for sure.

Friday and Saturday should be epic.

Some of those kanus look like the super light Tahitian style "lagoon kanu".  Super fast, but a real challenge when it gets rough, they can huli much easier compared the the traditional Hawaiian shape.  Kind of like a flatwater SUP rocket compared to a stable cost runner board.

Thanks for braving the elements Bill, that video gives a great perspective on the conditions those guys were facing.  Looks cold and miserable for a canoe race.

greatdane

Thanks for posting! I just got back from 2 weeks in Kailua, Oahu and got to experience the 6th tornado there in 50 years.  Power out, thunder, flooding... ah paradise.... Surfed Haleiwa Harbor one day and wished I had my snowboard gear to put on after... brrrr.

People back home kept e-mailing me and asking why I hadn't surfed Flat Island or the Moks yet... because for 4 straight days it was gusting over 50mph and no one was out except the kiters.  Had to swallow my pride and surf Waikiki for a couple days (-:  But it was so fun!
First time not surfing in wetsuit and booties in 3 years...
