The Best SUP Vehicle?
« on: February 07, 2012, 03:41:25 PM »
While I know we have the "What does your SUP carrying vehicle look like...?" thread, I was wondering......

If you could pick out any vehicle to best serve your SUPing adventures, what would it be?

It would also have to be your "daily driver" to haul the kids around and take the wife to dinner on occasion, so let's hopefully not get into any of these.....

.....unless that's what the wife and kids like to be hauled around in.   ;)  ;D

I'm kinda partial to a "Westy" or the older "VDub" buses, but the wife ain't digging the idea of "dinner out" in one of those :'( ........so what else y'all like or think works best?

I've got a Westy 1985 that I purchased in April. Wife and kids love it. Problem is to make it a daily driver, you have to spend a lot of money. I bought it for 2600, and now have 14.5k into it. Granted it has a rebuild tranny with an LSD , upgraded brakes all around, all new cooling system, all new suspension, engine conversion (0 mile ford focus crate engine) etc, etc. And it still looks like the day I bought it. I have been daily driving it for a couple of months now, but I don't want to do it much longer as I want to keep it for our long road trips from Miami. My element works great for a Sup vehicle but 10 ft is absolute max inside with no family inside.

Sprinter might be it. But it is expensive.

Sprinter... This year swapped one of the bikes and had the 14 and 12.6 right down the center. Not fond of roof racks. No wife and kids but in that case add the 3 rows of seats back in and use racks.

I've looked longingly at Sprinters as it would solve my SUP/bike transport and storage issues all in one place, but I don't have the budget or the parking space for that thing.

I love my Toyota Tacoma crew cab with a camper shell.  I may own one for the rest of my life.  Roof rack isn't too high off the ground.  Plenty of room for passengers.  It's not a Lexus interior, but it'll do.  The wife doesn't mind being taken out in it at all.  A great SUP/all around vehicle.

Mitsu Delica Spacegear 4x4 diesel?

Pretty tall for loading boards on the roof though...

2012 Ford Ranger 3.2 diesel. Completely redesigned from the ground up and available everywhere EXCEPT North America where it has been discontinued. The Ranger is now about the same size as the Tacoma available in 4 doors, and it's winning numerous awards ranging from performance to safety. Throw a canopy on the new Ranger and I probably wouldn't want anything else.

I agree with Bulky Biker on the Tacoma with a canopy being a great SUP vehicle. I have a Mazda B4000 4x4 with a canopy and it works great, but would like just a bit more size than the Mazda/Ranger gives. A canopy gives great versatility and lets you store boards on the roof and inside, as well as a bunch of gear.

The Nissan NV 2500  high roof van looks like it would work, so far I've only seen it on line. Quite a bit less $$$ than the Sprinter.

THe swagger wagon:

Can fit four SUP's inside... and two on top... and four friends... and all their gear...

In ten minutes, it can be decommissioned and ready for the wife, the friends and a night on the town...

I like the roof spread on that ride tho those racks wouldn't make me feel good with a 17 on top.

Really like this.... your Dad a Navy guy?

For kids, wife, gear, and looking good, it's the Ford Excursion. Find a diesel and you get 20 mpg for your daily go-getter.

And if you are worried about getting enough SUPs on, well...

It's got to be the Suzuki Swift. Runs on the smell of an oily rag, small enough to squeeze into any parking spot.....yet DJ fits a 17" board on his  :P

A sprinter diesel rv is on my list for the family, sups, and I. I've been dreaming of them every night. Hopefully soon.
