Thoughts on 12' 404 Floater vs. Starboard Big Easy/Atlas
« on: January 26, 2012, 05:44:39 PM »
I am looking to get my first board. I am 6'2 190lbs. In good shape and have been surfing for a number of years. That said I am looking for a board for mainly flatwater that will work well taking my now 4yr old son out with me. What are your thoughts on the 12' 404 Floater and or the Starboard Atlas and Big Easy for my needs? Thanks

First Please be sure your child has a life jacket on.

As far as boards I don't know much about the 404 but I can tell you The SB's are big and floaty

Where are you located that would help in making board recomendations

Thanks Jim, yep my son already has a life jacket. I live on the coast here in Delaware and have endless bays and waters to paddle. I know of a a couple local dealers who stock Bic,Naish, RRD, Oxbow, Jimmy Lewis, 404, and Starboard. Any input is appreciated.

I rate my Atlas, IMO a more versatile board than the Big Easy, extra width and vol helps when carrying kids. Bungee tie-downs are a handy touch for strapping down some gear or giving the kid something to hang on to. Super stable, glides and tracks surprisingly well, I even use mine as a rough-day stock class racer. The nose and tail kick make it a viable cruisy small-med wave surfer as well. Highly recommended for your size and stated purpose. My only minor gripe is the stock fin tends to be a bit small for best flat water tracking (easy to swap a fin out).
We don't get 404s down here so can't comment.
In theory, there should be no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is...
