Kelly Slater seen with SUP
« on: January 09, 2012, 01:12:37 PM »
I read a while ago that someone had heard K11 bought a board in Cali. I was surfing in his hometown of Cocoa Beach last weekend and saw that he has a good paddle!

If you look at the handle edge you can see a hand holding the paddle. My guess it's Boludo. Confess!!. Funny shot, and I've heard from guys who know that Kelly Slater gets on a SUP now and then.

Anybody else notice that the board in the statue is BACKWARDS?!  :D Relative to the "classic pose" his body is in, that is (never mind modern skateboard inspired reverts, etc., etc.). Too funny...

Not to name drop, but I was talking to Kelly last year at a Laker game and we were discussing SUP.  He said he had never tried it but he didn't share the same hatred most surfers do towards standup.

I think his exact words were "No one ever drops in on me."

It's an awkward pose given that Kelly Slater is one of the most fluid and dynamic surfers ever to stand on a board. I would have expected something a lot more vertical.

You know what they say about guys with big feet, right?

a) they wear big socks
b) can hang five...over the SIDE of the board
c) there's no way Kelly's feet are that big
d) all of the above

Whoever created that statue should be tarred and feathered. Horrible. The nose of the board is pointing the wrong way, or Kelly is, can't figure it out.  I mean, did nobody proof read the damn statue before they went to press?
I'm gettin' funny dreams again and again
I know what it means, but …

It is not backwards. Imagine Kelly is hitting the lip and bringing the tail around on a top turn. It is modeled after a photo of Kelly doing a tail slide at Sebastian inlet ;D

And here I was laughing at the thought of all the haters freaking out over the pic of kelly on his SUP, tearing it up.  Oh well, it's bound to happen sooner or later. ;D

Good to hear the sculpter wasn't that clueless after all! (still not sure about the Hobbit feet though...).

No hate for the legend, that is the essence of STYLE. ;)

I believe it's too late to complain about the design due to the statue of limitations.

Maybe that's Kelly's REAL secret, if his feet are that big he doesn't even need a surfboard.

Actually, Kelly does have really big feet. They made a big deal about it when he was a kid and attributed a lot of the way he controls his board to them back in the day. This thread is highly entertaining.

It takes a quiver to do that.
