Walmart SUP
« on: December 04, 2011, 12:49:52 PM »
[Walmart has been selling these for a few months now. Don’t know if they are just sold locally, or if they are at other Walmarts. They didn’t have any specks listed anywhere other than on the price sticker. 10’-$609. 9’3”-$580. They look like decent boards at a good price for someone just getting into SUP.
It's all relative.

I can just see those going thru the DC in Bentonville.... "Zeke, what the heck are these?!??!"

I'll never forget back in the early 60's when I was just a young teen, we went into Montgomery Wards in San Diego, for school clothes, and they had some surfboards in there.
I remember pointing out to my younger brother the small ridge that ran all around the perimeter of the boards and saying to him, "see, this is how you can tell it's a pop-out".
Those boards were called "Surf City".  ;D
I always looked, but I never saw any of them in the water.
It takes a quiver to do that.

At first glance, the boards don't look all that bad.  The wood veneer decking was not what I would have expected when I opened a thread titled Walmart SUP.  However, I'd pay 500 extra to avoid the stigma of being someone who "rides a Poi Pounder."  Still, who here isn't just a wee bit er...curious... to see how they work?

No offense to our Chinese trading partners, but I'm really trying to buy American this Christmas.  At the risk of being labeled a boutique snob, I kind of like talking to shop owners about the shape and what they were aiming for when they were making the board.  I doubt that Skippy in Isle 17 can give me anything useful on a board's volume or rocker.

By the way, did you ever see what they called their paddles?

I believe the matching paddle line is sold under the name of "Coconut Clubs"...or was it "Macadamia Mallets"?

Not sure about the boards, but just saying "Poi Pounder" makes me feel dirty...

I saw some of the comments about "Poi Pounder" before I saw the photos, and thought people were kidding.

Would these boards be good in mushy conditions?

I doubt these boards have enough volume to float the average Walmart shopper.

;D

But if they go to Costco, they can get a 3-pack for the same price (although might be knock-offs) and just leave them shrink-wrapped together for triple the volume.

Walmart's going to get a lot of returned boards when people realize that after a couple of hours on a Poi Pounder, you start going blind.

I think you "misunderestimate" the Walmart's shoppers creativity. One board on each foot you know.
