Best Open Ocean Racing SUP for 200+ lbs. Paddler
« on: August 15, 2011, 01:48:53 AM »
I am in the market for a new or used 12'6" to 14" SUP board for open ocean paddling and recreational racing.  Can anyone give me ideas on what type would best suite a 200 lbs. paddler.

I have 4 years experience on a 10'6" PSH AA and a 9'2" PSH AA and I am very stable on my boards.  I want a board that will be fast and made for heavier paddlers.  Thanks for any input.

Have a boo at the Starboard Race Series. These boards are designed to do well in rough open water paddling. There is three different widths and even the narrowest at 27.5" has enough float for a 200 pounder and is reported to be very stable. I have the 31.5" and bought it as a touring SUP and it is very stable and a blast to paddle in open water.

Starboard have the Coast Runner and Open Ocean in 14' lengths and they are basically longer versions of the Race Series with the Open Ocean having more rocker than the Coast Runner.

Wow! I'm liking the Laird Bark boards.  What is the price for each one?

I'd agree with lazymodo.  I'd recommend an SIC board, either the 14' Bullet which works for paddlers up to 220, or a custom if it's in the budget.

Thanks for the ideas!!  I think I want a C4 V1 racer or Vortice but they are quite pricey!

I use the Gary McNabb Sea biscuit its an awesome board I am happier with the board every time I go out.
Tons of bouncy for us big guys I got the board I was over 250lbs and my feet stayed dry and very stable.
Plus I can really get that board moving and cuts through chop awesome with its nose.

Hope you can try that one before you buy. It's a very quick board no doubt, but medium to big guys seem to find it a little tippy. I've only paddled a Vortice in flat water, but had no trouble with the stability in those conditions. But then again, I weigh about as much as an alloy paddle.  :o

Naish Glide 14' great fun dwboard and works on flatwater to i like to get the genuine planning felling when catching glides not the "canoeboost" you get from raceboard with deplasments hulls
