Wood_Ogre builds a Koa Kaholo 14 Kook Box
« on: August 10, 2011, 08:11:30 PM »

Got the patterns for the Keholo 14. The first thing to do is to make masonite templates. Working with 14 foot paper just dosent happen.

fairing templates with sanding block

fairing block is a sanding block with 50 grit and a block of wood to keep it square with face of template

Keep going.  I'm enjoying it having just bought plans here in Australia and looking forward to starting building when I finish all the other projects I have on the go.

To do the frames I glued the pattern to masonite then cut them out with band saw and jig saw. faired them with drum sander. I then double side taped them to1/4 inch plywood, rough cut the plywood then routed them to finish size with a template router bit .

Because the 1/8 inch plywood I am useing for this board  has only 1/42 out er laminates it is not posible to do a good scarf joint I will do a finger joint. In order to do the finger joint I will need to make a router template.

I start the template by doing the layout on masonite then drill the holes that will be the end of the sockets. This template will be wide enough to do a boat that I will build in the future.

The fingers are scribed with a exato knife and sliding T bevel then cut out with a jig saw.

After they are all cut out the ends are rounded carefully with 50 grit sand paper

The bottom panels are cut to finish size with a template router bit. they are 2 inches to long to allow for cutting the finger joints.

fingers have been cut (right side) note that the template is fastend to the wast on the left side.

to make shure nothing moves around while routeing , the panels , router template and a backer ply are clamped in alinement and the fastend to the work bench with wire brads.
