First SUP Lesson and Paddle!
« on: June 19, 2011, 07:38:29 PM »
Hello all,

I've been lurking for a while as I have a lot to learn and not a lot to contribute.
Now that the water is finally warming up, I took my wife out for a 2 hour lesson -- it was our first time on a SUP - and I can finally say,  Now I get it!
Loads of fun and a great workout.  I particularly enjoyed the short learning curve compared to other board sports.

It was a beautiful day but there was a fair bit of chop (6-8") which made things a little more challenging, but we got in quite a bit.
Normal Stroke, Sweep Stroke,  Surfer Stance and Pivot and back.  I had some trouble with the surfer stance pivot (not sure what its actaully called sorry) due to the chop bouncing me around a bit, but it wasn't bad.

Absolutley worth the coin and time for anyone considering SUP for the first time.

Thanks,
A

Welcome, glad you had fun.  And with your wife too!  Even more awesome to be able to go after it with your family.

And then you buy a board.  And then another, closer to what you really needed.  And then another that will serve a different purpose.  You might sell the first one.  Now to get a better paddle.  Something all carbon.  And maybe get into racing, you'll need a third board.  No use selling the first anymore, it's a good guest board.  So now you need a downwinder board, a 12'6 race board, at least two different wave boards for different conditions, maybe a 14' race board too, an inflatable or plastic for the rivers.  How bout an expedition board for overnighters...

You are infected now.

You hit the nail on the head, XLR8--when is the SUP support group meeting?  Or the one for spouses who have a very different idea of what a fancy piece of foam should cost?

XLR8 -  I couldn't have said it better.  Its addicting.  I just bought my second board, now my wife wants one too.  Its a great thing to do with the family.

It's a shame that we all have to get into surfing and SUP.

That was a joke, for those who didn't get it.

I saw a couple of used Laird/Pearson's in St Augustine and Daytona, FL.  Also think there was a used Surftech (not sure which one).  They are rare, but a few out there.  Think someone on this site said to check craigs list or the paper.  Good luck.
