2011 Starboard 14 Coast Runner
« on: June 17, 2011, 02:08:34 PM »
Well, after waiting months for this, here it is, the Starboard Coast Runner 14 in AST
(I thought the Melbourne bunch - DJ, PTwoody or Jonothan would get the first scoop...) ;D

I drove down to Silent Sports in Toronto to pick it up on Tues

I've paddled it for the last 3 days.....So much for 12'-6" boards......I'll follow this up with another report very soon

cheers

Wow Muskoka, that looks really nice!!

Please let us know your impressions. Way less rocker than the Open Ocean, I had my Open Ocean on the trailer next to an F16 V2 yesterday and the nose rocker of the two board was remarkably similar. I think DJ got some photos comparing them.

Would be interesting to see how the rocker of the Coast Runner compares to the Ace 14.

Thanks Jonathan...I think it was your report on the Open Ocean that inspired my rampant materialistic quest for the Coast Runner......(My wife gets the FreeRace.....works everytime... ;))

The only other 14 that I've paddled is a Bark Dominator.... the Coast Runner seems just as fast in light chop, but there's a lot of water splashing off of the nose....unlike the Dom, which cuts though the water silently.  The big diff is that downwind (only light, 10 knot winds so far), the CR takes off.....it wants to glide....

I can't wait for a downwinder....though arranging shuttles around here with only a couple of us into it, is difficult.

It paddles through boat wake (big wakeboard towboat wake) easily, the water sloughs off of the nose, and if it pokes deeply, it resurfaces with composure....no crazy side to side movement, etc.   It is really stable, as you noted with your Open Ocean.
(but not as stable as my FreeRace 31.....I could dance on that.... though my wife has told me to never, ever, dance. :D)

I'm heading out tomorrow for a paddle with a friend, so I'll get some real pics of it in the water.....

Hey Moskaka - how does it compare to the Dominator for stability ?  Keep us posted on this board and how it downwinds.  Kind of toying with getting an Open Ocean since I already have a Dominator.

Those comparo pics are here.. http://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/SUP/Point-Cook/

Very different boards.. Very similar rockers.

Yeah, the Bat fin came off of my Freerace immediately, without even trying the stock dolphin type fin that came with the CR.  I put that on the Freerace...maybe I should switch back....what ja think?  (I seem to recall seeing the batfin on your new-to-you New, P.T.....have you tried it on any other of your boards?

Bing - The Dom and the CR have a very similar feel...a bit of a loose initial stability, but they both firm up the same way.  Your foot position relative to the waterline is similar, and they both have soft rails, with a fairly flat bottom....though the CR has that concave down the middle.  Again, the only real difference seems to be in the nose, and the volume....the CR floats my 190lbs a bit better.  It also feels stiffer, and certainly more of a solid build....though it weighs about 30 lbs.

I'll try to hook up with my friend who has the Bark and do a side to side comparison...

I use the bat fin on my 2010 New and 2010 14' Elite Race but the 12'6" Race that I just got a couple weeks ago came with the white dolphin fin and I haven't taken that off yet. I think the white dolphin fin is much better than last year's bamboo fin that came standard with the 2010 race boards. They looked nice but I damaged both of them. And I don't think they worked all that well anyway. I might yet try the bat fin on the 12'6" Race in place of the dolphin fin. Took that board on a downwinder today and it felt very jittery in the tail. Maybe Larry's fins would work better.

Okay, this board gets better and better all the time.....

Paddled it downwind (about 15 knots sustained....still light but good) and it just wants to glide.  Only got in about a 5 km run, but enough to open my eyes to the possibilities.

It paddles into the wind okay too.  With all the volume in the nose, I moved forwards to where my toes are at the edge of the grip pad.  It has a very different feel than my Freerace, which seems to cut through any waves....the Coast Runner has this floaty-surfy feel in the nose...kinda reminds me of a creek boat (downriver whitewater kayak for those not in the know...). Brian Szymanski certainly is on to something here. 8)

Sorry, no pics just yet.  Too busy trying to fit paddles into my schedule.....I'll get some of it on the water real soon, promise.

PTwoody - the Larry Allison Bat fin is a nice fit for this board.  Though I should probably try the stock dolphin fin, I can't see it being any better than the batfin.  So I'll put it on my Freerace.....I agree that the Freeraces stock bamboo fin was for looks only.

BTW, another great thing about this board are the handles.....night and day improvement over the centre recess handhold.

Finally some pictures and feed back on the CR. Looks great and the lower rocker should be more efficient for lake paddling. Keep the updates coming. What do you think of the CR as a long distance touring board?  Got a 12'6" 31.5" Race this spring and I'm looking forward to checking out the Coast Runner.

Here's a few more pics of the Coast Runner in the water, and side by side with the 2010 Freerace (discontinued this year for some reason...)

Robon:  If by long distance touring you mean adding some tie downs and bungees to lash a dry bag on etc, then I think it would depend on your weight.  At 190 lbs, the CR, at about 310 litres (I think..) is a good volume for my weight...I think adding a significant load to it would take away it's great performance.  Of course I'd have to test that theory to be able to tell for sure.  It might be just fine.  It sure is a fast board, upwind and downwind.  Even side chop doesn't bother it, the soft rounded rails just float it up and over.

Yeah I am very happy with the handles on the 12'6" Race. You're right, they're a massive improvement on an often poorly placed centre recess handhold. I think I'll buy some after market handles for the 2010 14'er.

After looking closely at the posted pics, I am really interested in riding this board. I have the 2010 14 foot Elite Race and that board sports what appears to be way more rocker than this new board, but in the photo of it in the water, the bow clears the water line at about the same point as my board?  Maybe I am just seeing things. Would love to see a side by side with the new Open Ocean and the 2010 Elite Race to really see the differences.

The CR has more rocker than I originally thought. Looks like a bit more rocker than the 12'6" Race for this year. Looks like a blast to ride.

Yeah, I meant distance touring and any non racing board I get will have, or I will put tie down plugs on for a small dry bag at the very least. A significant load will make just about any SUP paddle a lot worse I'm thinking. The CR has a lot of volume so you should be able to stuff a couple of small dry bags with food, extra clothes, etc for a long day on the water and not have to worry about the handling too much.

It's good that the your board handles well in all conditions. That's what I like about my Race as well. Rough water is no problem. I will be considering the CR when I decide to get a 14 footer.

Hi Muskoka SUP

That board does look very nice and I have my name on one of the first that will arrive in the UK, hopefully in the next few weeks, as far as I know.

I have just had the pleasure of paddling a Starboard Point 14'8 for 60 miles around the Scottish West Coast islands. I would really like to purchase this board off of the man who loaned it to me, Nick from http://www.thesupstore.co.uk/ but they love it too much!

So the Coast Runner is my next option. Does anybody know how the 14' Coast Runner compares to the 14'8 Point To Point??
