Naish Mana 9 vs Starboard Widepoint 8,10 Vs Hokua 9,6
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:04:46 AM »
i am looking for a new board, at the moment i am riding a Coreban Performer 9,6.

I am looking for a little more stability in chop, and a better handling. Downsizing would also be nice :) The Coreban Performers standing area is very convex, something which i could never get too comforable with.

i am 6,3 and weigh 200lbs...I saw the Naish Mana 9 in the shop and it looks beautiful. unfortuntatly it is not possible do demo any of those board in my area  :(

has anyone ridden one of those boards and could give me some feeback on handling and performance  ?

cheers

Marc

Coreban Fusion?  I'm 210 and it's plenty stable for me. Joe Blair 8-11 is good too (his current design or call him - he's got a new 8-11 coming that has a little less rocker and a thinner nose and tail).

after having some quality issues and bad customer service with my Coreban Performer, i will not get anything from that brand again.. :)

The Joe Blair will probably be very hard to get in Europe, so i might have to stick with Naish or Starboard :(

I love the shape of the Widepoint.  I own the 10'6 but demoed the shorter one and it does seem fun--I've got a few more pounds on you.  The standing area feels pretty broad and stable.

I weigh about 103kg and love my 9'6 Hukua. I have surfed it for about 18 months and am really struggling to find a board to beat it. It also has the option of walking to the nose if you are that way inclined. Over the last few months I have been surfing it as a twinnie which made the board really fun in certain conditions. If you are a bit heavier toss those plastic fins the board comes with and get some glass fins. The board is really light as well at about 8,5kg.
As per always try before you buy. I hope you find your board of your dreams.

I have the 8' 10" Starboard Widepoint, also known as the "Wardog" as it was primarily designed by Warren of StandUp Paddle Sports in Santa Barbara - I think they're the oldest Stand Up shop in the country.  I heard that Starboard loved his board so much that they helped bring it to production.  Anyway, I moved from a 9' 8" Ron House to this board and could not be happier.  It's actually more stable than the 9' 8".  The board is really light, great for getting out against waves (standing that is) and real fast down the line.  I absolutely love my Widepoint.  I was out the other day and there was a guy with the Coreban, we switched boards for a couple sets and he wanted my board.  The Coreban was less stable and had a funky shape - meaning, when I was standing on it, it seamed to be arched slightly, like I was not standing flat, I didn't like the feeling.  Anyway, that's my two cents.

I vote for the Mana - I have the 10 and love it.  I have to imagine that the 9 is everything I like about the 10 in a smaller, easier to throw around size. ;D

i have had the chance to demo the Mana 9 and the Wide point.

The Naish Mana is a beautiful board, very light and the build quality is top noth. i had it for 3 days and it felt very tippy to me. the sweetspot in the standing area is very small, and it takes some effort to catch waves.
It surfs very nice, super responsive it gives you the feeling that anything is possible.  On the 2nd and 3rd day the waves were about 5 feet with some sideshop, and it was really giving me a hard time. i feel in more than a bunch of times trying to balance the board, messing up a few takeoffs.

The i took the Wide Point for the rest of the week. I already noticed a big difference in stability and paddling speed on my way to the lineup.
the board is amazing, even in extreme sidechop, currents from the sandbank it wont buck you off.  i have tested it in waves from 2-6 feet and it felt great in any condition. i think i have never gotten so many waves in an hour. hats off to wardog for designing such a great board.  i bought it, and i could not be happier.

So how is the WP for going up and down performance wise? I have a 9'0" Hokua that is almost the perfect 9' board. My only complaint is the thick mid body rails which they put in for stability. I find them unnecessary and lack bite in hard full bottom turns..

you have to put some weight on the rails to burry them deep on the wide point, as the rails are also quite thick.  i can live with that :)
on the wave, i found that the 9 foot mana turns a bit easier but it was lacking the stability, padability of the starboard.

I can't say much about the coreban, but I have owned the 9'6'' Hokua and I currently have the 9'0'' Mana (my wifes board).

At 200lb either board is fine. Both boards go early, but the Hokua can handle a little more variety of wave. I think it depends a little how you like to ride. Both boards are super nice.
The Mana rides more like a longboard. I've had it out in ultra choppy reasonable big waves (about double overhead). The board handles it easily...but that goes for the 9'6'' Hokua too. The Mana paddles easy into waves.

There major difference is how the boards feel when turning. I think the mana has a more gentle way of turning, where the hokua is more slashing. The Kohua also has a lot of fin placement options, and I experimented a lot with different fins on the board, and the overall feeling on that board was for me that the versatility is was insanely good.

In terms of chop..both those boards are nice. I think the mana can handle as much chop as the hokua.

The mana also feels a lot less heavy than the bigger manas.

I have ridden those board while losing weight so going from about 215 to 180lb.

Btw would you consider the 9'0'' Hokua?
