Advice on a 10' do it all board???
« on: May 14, 2011, 02:42:18 PM »
I am in the market for a new SUP, I have an 11'6" cruiser that I enjoy, but am now in the market for a shorter board.  I am looking for something my wife can paddle in flat water and I can toss into the mush we  have for waves in the NW.  So far this is what I am looking at as I do not want to spend a ton:

  • Ron House 10'6" @ $750
  • 7S Uber Fish 2 10'2" @ $750
  • shaka boards 10'6" @ $800

I am open to all other brands but would like to stay at $800 or so?  All the boards mentioned are pretty heavy, 28-30lbs, is there anything else that is lighter?  My wife is 5'4" 110lbs and is stable on pretty much anything, I am 6' 165lbs.  Please let me know if you have any opinions or experiences.

I too went from an 11'6" to a 10 (still have the 11'6" though).  I'm 240lbs and 6'3" and wanted something that surfed better than the 11'6" but was still able to do everything else.  I went w/ the Naish Mana 10 Bamboo and have been very happy.  I know a new one would be out of the price range you want to be in, but maybe you could find a used one in good shape.  Just a thought to keep your options open.  Enjoy the search!!

You might want to give Brian H. at Hoviesup a call/e-mail.  I've used a Hoviesup 10-4 "Wave" model all winter here in Maine and really love the board.  It surfs really well, and is just the right size for the wife to do some flatwater paddling too.  I'm 165 lbs as well.

The board is going out of production, but he might have a few left in stock.

Definitely check-out Joe Blair’s 10’1”. Got one and love it. Primarily use mine in smaller surf. Up to slightly overhead- better surfers are ripping with this board in much larger surf.
Also have changed thruster set to longer slalom type windsurfing fin and cruised offshore…pretty good glide and very stable.
To improve flat water performance just ordered a Curtis Bluewater SUP racing fin for SF Bay area cruising.

That's a tough price point if you're looking for something with more performance.  The Starboard Widepoint would be a great board to do everything you want, but I don't think you'll find one anywhere near this price.  New is abotu $1400 and you don't see many used ones out there--I think it's because no one wants to let go of them. ;)

Agree with Bulky...the Coreban Icon is also an excellent do it all board but the pricing point is much higher than the wanted $800.
