How hot is too hot for Carbon fiber boards?
« on: May 04, 2011, 06:22:09 AM »
I have a full carbon board painted with vent screw.  If I remove the screw, am I safe traveling in 100 degree "F" weather and having it sit outside for several hours.  What kind of damage can be done even if the board is ventilated?

polysytrene starts to get soft at 158F and starts to decompose at 428F  acctual melting point is 464F.  Generally not supposed to store it above 176F for any extended time.  Melting point of cured epoxy 311-383F.  Carbon and Glass cloth is not an issue.

So as long as your vent is open there should not be any issues if its painted white.  If its black I could see the temp getting pretty high.

Have a look at this outside vs inside/car temp chart.

It took a 125F day to get the car up to 159F, which would just be getting up to the temp where EPS would start to soften and about three times as high to get it to melt.  Acctual board strength will not be affected b/c as soon as its in the h20 it will be much cooler.

So its really unlikely that any heat damage will occur.  Always make sure your vent is out, thats the big issue.  If you take a cold board first thing in the a.m and put it in a car or on top of a car with the vent closed, theres a chance the air inside the boatrd will expand and delaminate the carbon/glass.  Always remember to remove or loosen your vent when you fly a board somewhere.

Oh, heres the chart

bottom line; remove your vent when its not in the water.  Other than that, don't worry about it, but best to leave it out of the direct sun, b/c uv rays will weather the paint.

Also don't underestimate the effect of paint color on how much the board heats up.  My carbon Fanatic Fly Race (painted white) can be in direct sunlight for several hours and is completely cool to the touch, while my epoxy Starboard blend (painted red) heats up rather quickly.

Red is nearly as good as black at heating up. I'd have to mull over the physics, but probably has to do with the wavelengths of light available to convert to heat. Red pigment adsorbs all frequencies except red.

I think the biggest problem with letting a board sit in the sun too long is potential for delamination. I've seen boards with a bubble under the black strap. If you're worried, stick it in a light cloth bag, or get a reflective one.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

If you keep it in a foil bag, be sure it is well vented by keeping the zipper open a bit.
