Deckpad Removal
« on: March 26, 2008, 03:49:35 PM »
Has anyone taken the deckpad of the Bonga Model and replaced with a different one? If so what is the easiest way to do this and what do you use to remove the glue from the deck. I want to replace with a C4 pad, I miss the little channels in the pad.Any help would be useful.

I just stripped my pad off. I used a flat blade and scrapped the pad then used goof off and scrapped and scrapped and scrapped the glue. Was a pain in the okole and I mean a fricken pain.
Here is the pic of pad off with the ugly glue prior to using goof off:

I will post pics of the finished product tonight or tomorrow.

I haven't done the Bonga but I have done many deck pads in general...   I can only say this...

IT SUCKS NO MATTER HOW YOU DO IT!      :'( :'(

Well, I did hire a friend once and it was the best money I ever spent!    He won't do another though....

Another trick is to soak the deck with graffiti remover or goof off and then use a paper towel. Personally I will throw away a board if I ever have to remove glue again. I did this project because the deck pad was peeling badly and my son would not finish what he started. Dam 11 year olds.

I had to soak sections of my exisiting stuck (pain in the a--) glue with goof off then used a plastic scrapper with lots of rags to consistantly wipe off the glue. If you don't immediately wipe of the glue, the glue will only bunch up and stay on the board. Then when you think that you have the all glue off, you wipe the top of your bosrd again about three more times goof off. After that wash the top with window cleaner before placing a new deck pad on. Hope this helps you.

P.S. Got this advise by a legend surfboard shaper...  D.T.

You might try a circular sander/grinder, then apply contact cement before installing new pad.

Try this:
1-Peel/Rip/Swear/Use every name in the book to get all the rubber off.
2- use a razor blade to scrape off left over residue.
3- Use Ascetone to break down the glue. Then wipe with a paper towel.
(using alot of paper towels to clean up is key & is easy on the check book)
4- And like everyone said using GOOF OFF is the best thing to use. Using a razor to scrape off the gumming substence and alot of papper towels to wipe down the area.

The main key is to work in section from top to bottom, wipeing in a downward motion toward the tail. The more substance you move toward the tail the more easier it will be to remove being that your adding some goof off to the next area for cleaning thus breaking down the already broke'in down/soften excisting substance.

This is how I have removed my deck pads from several of my boards. It may take awhile but worth all time knowing that your deck is CLEAN.......!

My trick for speedy removal is this. One gallon of acetone and a paint brush. Brush under the pad as you pull it up. Use lots of acetone and be extra sloppy with it. It peels up without as much effort and leaves little glue behind.

Goof off is pretty rasty stuff, wear gloves and a respirator might be nice

good point bill, people should be aware that anything which can enter the pores will be circulated throughout the body in less than a minute.

you don't want to know what i use... hint, it starts with a "v" and ends with the "n" word (heheheh).

Yah Braddha Sam Pa'e you hit it on the spot. And yes use, use, use gloves and in a well ventilated area when using goof off.

Depends on the deck pad but I've taken quite a few off of my surfboards by using a hair dryer.  Heat the corner and use a blade or surfboard wax comb edge to get a nice clean section up to grab.  Then once you can grab the edge pull very slowly and steadily as you continue to blow the hot air under the pad.  What happens is the glue becomes soft and most of the time it all comes up on the pad and leaves no mess on your board.  As long as you don't bring the blower to close to the board for too long you won't damage it.
Hope that helps.....no nasty chemicals or mess.  If it doesn't work when you first start then it's some kind of hard core glue and then all I can say is Good Luck.  I had a windsurf board like that which just came up in pieces and eventually I used a sander.....not fun....all day project....never again. ;)
