Today's Maui Molokai race
« on: July 16, 2011, 08:03:38 PM »
The word on the street among top tier paddlers i know is that Dave Kalama had picked it up a notch and was ready to rumble. The conditions looked great and it turned into a repeat of last years Maui to Molokai race with Conner and Dave, head to head, back and forth.  Sounded pretty damn exciting but the kid won again, Dave 2nd, Livio third.  Conner beat his time from last year by 5 min. which is significant.  I was peppered with update calls from a few chase boats... amazing to get such great cell reception from out in the channel.  Naish race is next.

No pics or vid from me.  I went downwind yesterday with my grandson again.  This time no fear at all .  But anyway Karen will have a million pics of her son and maybe Dave when he's next to him.  She'll post or when she sends them to me, I will.

The vid they took last (I edited it) year didn't generate much interest and it also feature a great match race with Conner and Dave although the picture quality on Karen's video was marginal....  No one seemed interested in paying me to be out on the ski for 4 hours so I took a pass.  A Maliko run is around 1.5 hrs on a ski and that's alot.

I believe these finish line races could be made into great media events if someone put up the money for different angle shots (heli, jetski, board mount, land and other potential angles).  They aren't spectator events since they are so far offshore but in this age, open ocean racing could be brought right into the living rooms across the world.  So far in this current business climate no one seems interested.  Here in the US we only have till august 2 until we default and become like Greece.

Yesterday's race was one of the best downwind runs I've ever done. Everyone I talked to after the race had a great time and couldn't believe how big the swells were out there. The conditions were all time.... Connor set a new course record, I think it was around 3:08. Thanks to Maui Jim, Handsome Bugga Productions, and everyone else involved in this race. I can't wait to see the pictures.

The following are the men's results from 1-8.
1. Connor Baxter
2. David Kalama
3. Livio Menelau
4. Mark Raaphorst
5. Jeremy Riggs
6/7. Photo finish b/w Bart DeZwart and Scott Trudon (not sure who pulled it out)
8. Jerry Bess

Women:
1. Andrea Moller
2. Jenny Kalmbach
3. Devin Blish

I borrowed a Bullet, because there wasn't a 14' division. There were paddlers from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and France (surprisingly, no one from the US mainland) that were on 14' boards and had a great time. Hopefully next year they'll include a 14' division. Most of the top guys were on Bullets.

Had Naish stickers but didn't look like the production model. Not a Bullet either.
