Best board for beginner
« on: April 01, 2011, 11:48:58 AM »
I am looking at purchasing the Hobie 11'2 ATR or the Rogue 11' All waters.  I want a board that will be good for surfing and flat water training days.  I have some experience surfing but I still consider myself a novice.  I am 6ft 185lbs.

Either the Hobie or the Rogue will be good for both Flat water and surfing small stuff.
The Starboard 10'5" Widepoint will be better for surfing - but not so good as a flat water board.

Try NSP 11'0 or 11'6", they're also a little easier on the budget.  Great review here - http://www.supsurfmag.com/equipment-stand-up-paddle/reviews/a-look-at-the-nsp-11%27-stand-up-paddle-surfboard-20081111582/

The 2011 models now use the FCS Tri-fin system as well.  Great for beginners

I'd agree with the recommendation for the Widepoint.  At your size, I don't think you need to go as long as 11ft.  You'll get tired of that quickly as your skills and balance improve.  I've got 70lbs on you and started out with an unsinkable 12ft barge.  Was a good (and cheap) start, but now I want more agility.  The 10'5 WP floats me fine and turns really easy.

I started with an ATR a few years back. It is super stable. I did a lot of 3-5mile runs with my 7 year old son flopping all over the front of the board with no issues. The thing is built like a tank and took all the punishment I could throw it as well. I am not familiar with the other board, so can't offer any insight on that one.
