What it's all about...
« on: January 16, 2011, 11:50:09 AM »
Okay, so this should be in the sessions topic (or the waterproof digital camera thread).  Beautiful winter day in Northern California.

About 60F, water temp about 52F.  Not a great surf day, with disorganized ankle-waist high surf.  A day for the big boards.  Glad I wasn't packed up in the prone lineup waiting for the odd wave with 15 other surfers.  This is why I picked up SUP.  Fun on mediocre days.  Great just to be out on the water with my girl.  Paddled back as the sun was setting.

Mushy crumblers

I kept trying to get H to line up with the sun setting behind the trees on the point.  But she saw a little bump, dug in and left me holding the camera while she surfed it in for the day.  Pose for pics, or surf??  Her priorities are in the right place...

Oh look, a little wave!

I'm outta here...  see you on the beach.

My first day with my new Pentax Optio W90.  So far, so good.

Nice... The more you use that W90, the better you get with it. Here's a pic of my sup friend Matt B taken back in the summer (when it was warm here in N/E Florida)...   Later,   JD

I've also just bought the Pentax W90.. Do you just use the A (auto) setting or is there a manual setting that you like?

The A setting could be aperture instead of auto.  I don't know about that camera.  In manual exposure on good cameras (not mine) one can set a constant on aperture, ISO or shutter speed.  And one can have partial manual settings like say if you set it in A for aperture and you have the aperture set wide open on a bright day, then the camera would adjust the ISO lower and higher shutter speed  to limit the light so that the shot is not over exposed.  If I have my choice for action shots, it would be a fast shutter setting to limit blur (unless you want that) and let the camera so its thing on aperture and ISO.

Shot some overhead SUP surfing at Lanes this morning with Rob, Livio, and a few others.  Blah light but OK for shooting from the cliff handheld.  I was a dummy and forgot the tripod.  Putting some music on it right now... should be up by tonight.  3 min.

Great shots - it's amazing how good the gear is these days... and the shooter was solid too. ;)
