Werner Fuse or Nitro?
« on: January 07, 2011, 10:00:50 AM »
I am seriously contemplating one of these 2 for my next paddle. I'm 6'4", 220 lbs. and will be using it primarily for surfing. I currently have a 8.5" C4 and it is the only paddle i have ever had... at my size would the Nitro be a little small? Thanks.

A while back when the Fuse came out. River said the Fuse was designed for 190+ LBS and the Nitro is for less than 190LBS

I am at 200 and love my Fuse

Hi I have both  and for me the fuse is a much  better size  paddle  for my weight 190lbs
I find with the nitro I don't catch the waves as early .

I would say the Fuse would be the perfect fit unless you have any pre existing issues with wrist elbow or shoulders.  Then the Nitro will be a better because it will be less impact and resistance.  Feel free to contact me with any specific q's.

Hi,
I am 6/185 pounds and have the Spanker at the moment. I would like to get a smaller paddle for flat water race and cruising to use with my 12'6 Fly Race. Would you guys recommend Nitro or Fuse? My Spanker is very stiff, 2009 model, I hope Werner decreased that stiffness in later models.

From the input i have received i would think you are looking for the Nitro... and yes i think flex changes were made for this years paddles.

I would definitely say Fuse, based on your size and familiarity with the Spanker.  I have both, but the Fuse is the flatwater paddle of choice.

You didn't ask about this, but I highly recommend the bent shaft over the straight shaft (which you can get with both the Fuse and the Nitro).  Benefits are increased reach and ergonomics.

I'm currently using an 80 inch Spanker for flat and surf, but am going to get a Nitro.

Coming from a canoeing/kayaking background, I definitely have an appreciation for the bent shaft paddles. If nothing else it will distinguish between paddles on the rack!

After watching Werner's instructional video on the Fuse, I like the concept of lily-dipping the paddle for higher cadence paddling. I have to wonder how practical that technique would be in choppy conditions though.

Yes, I am considering the bent shaft. On the specs Fuse has a larger surface area then Spanker actually. I have a feeling that Nitro will be too small for me. I will try to test both Fuse and Nitro.

Viatormundi- Let us know how that goes, I haven't pulled the trigger yet on the paddle and your input would be helpful. I'm leaning toward the Nitro, probably with the bent shaft.

The black paddle and white 'Werner' logo are quite striking, but I'd love to see some creativity in the aesthetics department. I really like the look of the Methane.

Hi,

At your size the Fuse is the appropriate choice. The Nitro is quite narrow and has 100 square inches of blade area, not adequate for you. The Fuse is a great paddle. Check out our video review of the Fuse vs the Spanker here by Scott, who also weighs 220 pounds.

Fuse...for surf or flat water. It is very stable and with practice in surfing can go high cadence by not dipping the full blade an d on ther hand by going full depth will help you get out to the lineup in no time

I tried the nitro this weekend. It is definitely easier to paddle with nitro compared to Spanker. I was able to achieve higher cadence paddling without getting very tired. Also, the paddle goes through the water more smoother and stable in a way. Right now it is the right size for touring and racing but I got the feeling that it can feel small after couple of months hard paddling. Therefore I will try the fuse as soon as my dealer brings it.
I might keep my spanker for waves and use fuse or nitro bent shaft for touring/racing. Another idea is to sell my spanker and use an adjustable fuse or nitro for both touring/waves. In the video from paddleboardspecialist, the tester was saying that the adjustable shafts of Werner are quite good. Anybody has any experience with these adjustable shafts?
