General Discussion / Re: Have any of you experienced vertigo?
« on: April 25, 2022, 10:26:58 AM »
I've been diagnosed with BPPV in the past, and have had great results with various at-home positional maneuvers/exercises.  If you happen to have  BPPV, your Doc will show you some simple exercises to mitigate it.  In the meantime, if you search on BPPV you will find a ton of information.

Yes, George Greenough "edge board" and Bob Simmons "Simmons shape" influence really make the most out of mushy waves.  It's worth giving up a little maneuverability for speed.  I actually like the loose/skatey feel of my Mini-Simmons.

Check out the new Infinity Wide Speed, probably checks most of your boxes.

To your point SB, I just traded a car in at a dealer and under our sales tax rate 6.625% (NJ), I saved about $2,200.  I had quotes from a couple of the on-line sources which I used to negotiate my trade-in.  Of course, I didn't exactly make a killing on the new car purchase...
It's somewhat ironic that that this particular dealer is actually across the river, in Delaware, one of the states that does not impose sales tax on cars (unless from out of state ie NJ).

General Discussion / Re: Locking tie-down straps, DocksLocks?

No security system is going to be 100% effective, the best we can hope for is a measure of deterrence.  (Bla bla bla, yada yada...)

The KanuLocks have worked well for me for the las 10+ years (before they were "KanuLocks" -SPL).  I like the simplicity of a single system, decent strap and decent security in one.  Before Kanu Locks, I used Inno racks which were great but just a little bulky, and  are always mounted on the bars.

I've actually been thinking about going back to the Innos, because they are great when loading in strong winds (we've had a pretty windy winter).  One advantage to using something like Inno is that the lock is conspicuous and a casual thief may go on to the next opportunity.

One of the best security systems is of course the Blue Planet handle, (or similar) thread any cable through and lock it up.

Hard to beat Tom Carroll's pitch...pretty convincing.  That man has taken some hard bumps, but he just keeps soldiering on.

Ovalizing that particular handle is not too difficult.  I did that with a couple of Shaka Pu'u's way back when.  The core of the handle is foam so the only hurdle is shaping the CF skin.  A 5 minute job with a Dremel and you're good to go.  Hard to beat the feel of the oval Kialoa's and that T handle.

Of course we're free SC...now put on your life jacket and get out there and paddle (oh, and don't forget your whistle) ;D

Seriously though, take heart, sometimes bad reg's revert.  Just as one example, and close to me.  In the 1970's and most of the 80's skateboarding was essentially banned in Norway. While the regulators said protecting children was more important than letting big business make money, this was really a half truth.   It was likely more about saving national-healthcare kroner (dollars).  My family in Norway were convinced, from the national media coverage in Norway, that I was some kind of raging lunatic simply for for skateboarding here in the US.

However, since 1989, skateboarding has been and is very much alive in Norway, so there is hope.

Note: Count your blessings, I could have used a US tax law example...

It paddles well, but I can’t say that it paddles faster than other 10 footers.  It is very quick from rail to rail when you ride it from the tail.  It really surfs like a hp longboard.

As a non-technical person, I would have just assumed hamster, hamster-wheel and a couple oz of Jim Beam.

Very cool project, you and your brother have complimentary skills for sure!

Love my 10x27 New Deal, it's a true performance longboard shape, and the board construction is exemplary.  At 190, it's a little too low-volume for me on choppy days.  For a more relaxing session in chop, my 30.5", 10' Fanatic is my go-to.  When the waves, tide and wind cooperate, my 9'6" x 28" Jimmy Lewis Black and Blue gets the nod - one of, if not the only, dedicated SUP noserider (50/50 rails, parallel outline, low nose rocker, pronounced tail rocker, big single fin all culminating in displacement-speed, etc).

The shoulder carry is also great for avoiding inadvertent board contact with other beachgoers (especially little kids) on crowded days. (Not a problem in NJ at the moment  ;D)

I just fixed a fin-cut using Aquaseal FD.  They also make Aquaseal NEO contact cement specifically for neoprene but it is not as "permanent".

The Shape Shack / Re: Gorilla glue diy pour foam

Here is a small rail ding on a King's that was made much worse by attempting the repair with polyester resin.  As you can see, the polyester resin created an ugly cavity.

Ordinarily I would cut the old glass out completely and replace the foam with EPS.  But, in this case, to avoid the hassle of dealing with the Kevlar vector-net, I simply filled the void with GG and allowed it to expand leaving a small escape slit in the tape.  The expanding GG actually pushed the surrounding glass back to it's original shape (more or less).  A little epoxy and some 6oz glass and Bob's your uncle...

Question-does it absorb water?

Yes, but so does pour-foam.  Treat it just like bare EPS and you're good.
