SUP General / NYPD is the Best!
« on: August 02, 2016, 06:13:01 AM »
This is why I like the NYPD, they really understand the law and know how to set priorities.  What a great public service announcement.

I used to run up and down the Hudson and East River in small boats and can tell you from personal experience that Casey and Roy's crossing experience is typical of the traffic that you would encounter.  (And for you sharpies; I am not that Roy).

SUP General / eBay for Dummies
« on: July 28, 2016, 11:08:40 AM »
As a purchaser of less than a handful of items on eBay, I jumped in on an auction for a Onewheel (nib) yesterday and got the second highest bid.

But, this morning I got an email from the seller offering to sell me the board at the high-bid because the "winner backed out".   My response was, at auction shouldn't the item go the next highest bidder?  The sellers response was, "I can't do that, it's below my cost".   I smell a shill...

Beyond this little rant, I'm stepping away form this transaction.  What would you do?

Gear Talk / Dinged Through my RailSaver
« on: July 20, 2016, 07:29:15 AM »
Here is a little ding from a paddle strike that went right through my RailSaver (Puka Patch) on my Jimmy Lewis Black and Blue Machine.  Once I fix the ding I will replace the Puka Patch tape with RS Pro.

SUP General / SUP Just not Cool
« on: July 03, 2016, 05:49:53 AM »
Yesterday morning, 15-20mph off-shore wind, waist high, mid-tide, goofing around, I tried to sit-down paddle my B&B into a wave but missed.  A surfer on a 5'10" fish, laughing, says "even I would have thought paddle surfing was cool if you would have made that".

When he said he had never tried stand up, I suggested this was a perfect opportunity.   At 190 lbs, 15 less than me, "it should be cinch" on my 9'6", 117 liter Black and Blue.  Well, he never got to his feet.  After 15 minutes, and dozens of attempts to get up, he was almost out of sight as the wind carried him further off shore.  I had to borrow a longboard from a buddy to paddle after him and reel him back in.  To his credit, even after learning he was set up, he was gracious and is totally determined to conquer stand up.

And I'm determined to ride a shortboard again

Downwind and Racing / Race start strategy
« on: May 17, 2016, 12:17:11 PM »
Reading the recent Olukai 2016 post made me think about my strategy for our local race this Sunday.  There will likely be about 120 starting together from the beach with the first turn bouy only 100 yds away; there will be a big bottle neck.

As a mid-pack finisher, at best, but with decent starting/sprinting ability, do I go balls to the walls to the first bouy or hang back and let the stronger finishers have a better shot?

What a wuss!  I just answered my own question... thanks for listening ;D

SUP General / The Sands of Time

http://thesurfersview.com/live-beach-cams/central-new-jersey/belmar

In late summer the bulldozers made a large sand wall along the beach presumably to hold back the winter storm surges.  Now they are moving the sand back, presumably to regain the view lost.

My question would be, what's this going to do to our sandbars?

Apparently I do.

I got back from my dawn patrol this morning and noticed that I failed to strap my board down, WTF.   So, what's the take-away?  An SUP does travel nicely on the roof, fin-first; I mean it didn't even budge.  Second take-away, don't tailgate me...   ;D

Gear Talk / Coldwater-surf wettie opinions
« on: January 19, 2016, 02:34:39 PM »
Old age is creeping up.  While I've made it through several winters with my 4/3 Mutant, I'm ready for some more warmth.  Nothing too heavy, just a high quality 5/4 hooded suit.   So, I surfed a little web and find that Patagonia is going full-Yulex, Isurus is pushing compression and Yamamoto rubber, RC F-Bomb claims to dry by the time you get home, O'Neill is offering their most flexible ever, TB2 technology, and sadly, I'm apparently not hip enough to navigate the Matuse website (if you don't know they have a vintage (old stock) section, you'll never find it).

So, is any of this technology worthwhile, is Yulex going to save the planet, will the F-Bomb give me more TOW, will Isurus compression help me kick it up a notch?

If you haven't seen this compilation already, it's worth a look.  The perspective on Shipstearns is enough to make you hurl.  Ending with SUP sums it all up.

SUP General / Fun with paddle grips
« on: December 18, 2014, 01:28:09 PM »
I've done dozens of new grips and re-grips with out a hitch, so when I left a couple of newly epoxied grips to cure overnight, I never expected gremlins would visit and twist one out of alignment.  But there it was, one grip perfect, and the other, a quarter turn out, WTF!  No way was this coming apart.

I decided to try DJ's boiling water trick for the first time.  While anxiously waiting for the boil, I stuck the grip into the lukewarm water to make sure the pot was large enough.  Out came a constant stream of bubbles, the damn thing wasn't just misaligned it was leaking too!  Just a crap job all the way around.  Once the water came to a boil, the handle pulled off almost instantly. Some light sanding with 80 grit, a fresh batch of epoxy and we were back in business.

Gear Talk / Dihedral Blade
« on: July 09, 2013, 06:13:09 AM »
Is there a cost, in terms of efficiency, related to a dihedral blade design?

Does it increase slip and bleed power from the stroke while adding weight and thickness?  Or, is it as necessary as a fin on a surfboard?

Would your answer depend upon the level of skill of the user and the intended use, surf, downwind, flat water, whitewater?
