General Discussion / Longboard SUP Revolution - Bali 2023
« on: April 27, 2023, 07:10:48 AM »
I agree with Zane's comment, "Lately, the style of riding enjoyed by most of the SUP population is being revived in competition and coming full circle with Longboard SUP Surfing for amateurs and elite riders as a part of the Longboard SUP Revolution."

General Discussion / Not to change gears but
« on: August 23, 2021, 07:56:55 PM »
Has anyone had any experience using the RAD measurement system for sizing mountain bikes?  I’m thinking about picking up a Yeti SB 115 (for med/fast single track trail riding) and I’m stuck between M and L. Both sizes work for me, either will require a little fitting work.  My RAD measurement tells me to go with the M. My gut says the L.

Gear Talk / Black Project - Hydro (Well that was PDQ)
« on: February 23, 2019, 09:47:46 AM »
Just took delivery of a Black Project Hydro, ordered through Big Winds, but shipped directly from BP on Maui, 2 day air.  Looking to get out this afternoon for a little test paddle.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / FSA HSA and HRA Compliant
« on: January 08, 2019, 06:48:56 AM »
As I'm looking for a new distance board, I noticed a board manufacturer had the words, "FSA and HRA Compliant" on their website.  Could it be?

So I checked the general rules:

Exercise equipment is eligible for reimbursement with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA) or a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA).

...This includes treadmills, weights, and more. Exercise equipment must be used to treat a specific medical condition in order to be considered eligible for reimbursement. Exercise equipment used for general health and wellbeing is not eligible for reimbursement.

... Examples of specific medical conditions for which a doctor may prescribe exercise equipment include obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more. Weight loss plans alone are not an acceptable reason for reimbursing the cost of exercise equipment.

Has anyone had first hand experience with this?

SUP Safety / Buckles Sometimes Break
« on: May 29, 2018, 07:19:22 AM »
These straps had served me well for over 7 years.  I don't know why the aluminum casting fractured,  but suspect it must have taken a pretty good impact at some point.  In any event, the buckle came apart while I was tying off the the board, so no harm.

Events / Noosa Festival of Surfing 2018
« on: January 30, 2018, 06:22:08 AM »
I don't like the sound of this:

Noosa Festival of Surfing 2018

"For the first time in more than a decade, the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing 2018 will not include stand up paddle events, signalling the fact that SUPS has grown too big and too diverse to fit within the format of a surfing event.

We regard this as a positive move for both the SUPS community and our surfing base. Stand up paddle surfing and racing has grown to such a degree in recent years that many paddlers felt that they needed more space to run their events than we could offer within the festival. By separating the two events, we feel we are helping both sports to grow.

The Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival will still celebrate all surfing disciplines, but the accent of the “8 days of pure stoke” will once again be on amateur and professional longboarding and speciality events.

This is not a decision taken lightly. For more than a decade the Noosa Festival has helped to put stand up paddling on the map, but in recent years, with the major emphasis being on paddle racing, it was becoming apparent that the sport needed to develop its own stand-alone events. By the same token, the Noosa Festival has grown to such a degree that it needed to focus once again on its pure surfing aspects.

All Pro and speciality events will open for entry 1 November with some exciting new format changes."

I wonder if animals that feed at dusk and dawn, (sharks for instance) will begin feeding again at the pre-annular and post-annular phases of the eclipse. ;D

SUP General / When will I learn...
« on: August 14, 2017, 11:32:48 AM »
Yesterday, I surfed the morning, and after some midafternoon yard work I came back out and surfed a quick second session.  I rode that last wave all the way in, hopping off in knee deep water.  My right foot folded-in and popped as it sank into the soft sand.  Made me want to hurl.

Doc says, hairline fracture and high ankle sprain.  When will I learn...

I believe that they should, simply based upon the nature of the cases that they are thrown into.  In 2002 under Act 170 the legislature agreed and since then, Hawaii lifeguards have had a greater degree of liability protection than firefighters, EMT and police.  But that could change this year.

Some more background from West Maui Today  (Surfline also has a great piece on this issue)

HONOLULU — Hawaii officials are looking over two bills that would either keep or end liability protection for cities and counties during drowning incidents.

Kauai, Maui and Honolulu officials held a news conference Wednesday to urge lawmakers to extend liability protections for lifeguards working at public beaches, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported (http://bit.ly/2oGUExG) . Under Hawaii law, the county, state and lifeguards have limited protection from lawsuits stemming from lifeguard rescues.

Last week, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Scott Nishimoto moved a draft of a bill that would end that protection June 30. At the same time, another draft is moving in the Senate that would extend the protection until June 30, 2021.

Nishimoto argues that under current law, lifeguards have additional protections that other first responders such as police, firefighters and emergency medical technicians do not have. His bill would treat all first responders equally, he said.

“The current law leaves members of the public, who are injured or die because a lifeguard may have performed his or her job in an unreasonable manner, without any way to seek justice. If your loved one is hurt or dies due to negligence, would you not want the right to seek resolution?” Nishimoto wrote in a statement. “Under the current law, you have no recourse.”

Kauai County Council Chairman Mel Rapozo said without that protection, counties would be vulnerable to trial and personal injury attorneys who could gain significant revenue.

If lawmakers do not work out the differences between the bills or do nothing, the protection will end this year.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has said that he will not remove any of Honolulu’s 236 lifeguards from county beaches, even if current protections end.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has EVER taken a stress test (in a controlled environment or at self administered at home). Not looking to revisit the formula approaches (ie.220 minus your age), just actual results please.

Tell us what kind of test you used and the results (year of the test, max heart rate, age at time of test and gender), and whether you agree with the findings.  If you have a friend or family member that has recently taken a stress test and you can share the data that could be interesting too.
