Downwind and Racing / Drafting Etiquette
« on: April 12, 2013, 12:24:24 PM »
I’ve never drafted in a SUP race, at least not on purpose. How close do you have to get to take advantage of drafting on a SUP? Also, I know the rules of not drafting outside your board class and gender, but what is the etiquette involved in switching positions?

Technique / Is he a freak?
« on: March 19, 2013, 01:46:27 PM »
Two years ago I got invited to SUP race in Miami.  I remember watching the athletes warming up. There was this one dude that was paddling around with one foot up in the air and I was thinking to myself “Wow those boards are really stable”, Boy was I wrong!  I didn’t know it back then, but that dude was Danny Ching. Two years later I’m trying to do the same thing and can’t even come close to doing it. Is there a trick to doing this or is Danny Ching a freak?

Flatwater and Touring / The Cape

No, not that Cape. This is Cape Florida in Miami. I took the day off and decided to go for a paddle around Stiltsville. The Lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Miami and Stiltsville has a lot of history. Enjoy the pics.

Downwind and Racing / 12’6 or 14’ for Lighter Paddlers?
« on: September 11, 2012, 08:59:43 AM »
What’s your thought on board length in relationship to the paddler’s weight? I often read about the bigger guy having a disadvantage on a 12’6” but how about the guys below 165.  For example, would a 155 pound paddler do better on a 12’6 or on a 14’?  Let’s say for racing in choppy conditions, side wind and long distance (Not Downwind).
Thanks, Chilly

Random / Chigger Bites
« on: August 31, 2012, 09:11:44 AM »
Lately I’ve been getting killed by Chigger bites and was wondering what other Zoners do to prevent from getting bit.

As far a treating it, the only thing that I have found that works for me is Bactine. It’s an amazing product that has been around since the 1950’s but I just recently found out about it. I like it so much that I now carry an extra bottle in my truck.

SUP General / Bimini-Miami Challenge
« on: June 08, 2012, 05:21:28 AM »
What these two guys are attempting is incredible. I wish them lots of luck. Below is what they posted on Facebook yesterday.

What amazing support, enthusiasm and well-wishes Bill and I have received from friends in Miami and well beyond. Thank you!!! This project arose from many casual conversations while paddling the Gables Waterway and here we are, on the eve of launching. There are lots of people involved, lots of moving parts and we are thrilled to get our paddles wet!

... The short update is that we sail out tomorrow (Friday) morning at 5:30am from Black Point Marina to the Bimini Chain. Bill flew over today and we'll meet there. We will make our way back to Florida, starting at 2:30am on Saturday, paddling. Our calculations put on the Florida-side beach (hopefully South Beach) at about 5-7pm, Saturday night. Some of you have expressed interest in meeting us at the Surfrider Foundation tent on 3rd street during that time to help celebrate. If you are interested and able to join us, please do and bring some friends. Look for the Surfrider tent and listen for Jared Bistrong’s drums.

We will have SPOT which is a gps transponder sending location updates throughout the day to a few folks. We are trying to have those forwarded to this Facebook page for you all to follow our progress. Stay tuned for that.

Remember, we are attempting the first SUP crossing of the Florida Current (sometimes called the Gulf Stream) for two reasons… first, to raise awareness for the Rise Above Plastics campaign (visit Surfrider’s website for more information) and second, for the adventure.

If we happen to overshoot our target and land in Pompano Beach or Ft. Lauderdale, we will board our “chase boat” and meet you at 3rd Street. Again, thank you all for your support and interest in our journey. See you on the beach.

Gear Talk / What’s on your shaft?
« on: June 01, 2012, 05:02:01 AM »
I’m having trouble getting a good grip on my paddle when sweat and sunscreen gets on my hands. I was wondering what other Zoners are using on their shaft and handle?

Gear Talk / Nanotune
« on: May 18, 2012, 04:29:11 PM »
Does anyone coat the bottom of their board with wax, silicone, rainX or something similar that repels water?  Jamie Mitchell has a video on his website http://www.livinginliquid.com/ demonstrating Nanotune. I was wondering if it’s something I should try.
