TallDude--I think all Element owners are in the same boat.  You know they won't last forever, but you just hope something else will come along that you can get excited about (and afford) before your Element bites the dust.   Looks like the VW might be the answer for you.  The problems of having a weird vehicle that isn't like anything else...

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: Max Heart Rate
« on: June 23, 2019, 08:47:29 PM »
PonoBill is right, the formulas are just general and you can't stay at the max very long.

The "220 minus age" rule of thumb will probably give you a number lower than your true max, esp. if you're older and fit.  Best way I know of measuring it is go run up a hill as hard as you can, or something else equally taxing (towards the end of a workout so you're totally warmed up) using a heart rate monitor, or immediately checking your pulse for 10 seconds and multiplying by six.

Here's my experience with max heart rate, and there's also a lot of other good input from lots of people about it in this old discussion:

You can do it with spray cans. MTN 94 paints with their top coat.. The tips spray like a professional cap sprayer. They have a variety of tips to use.  https://www.sprayplanet.com/collections/mtn-94-spray-paint. Good shit.
TallDude, thanks for that link.  That could be perfect for some things I've been needing to paint.  So even if jarvissup ends up not going that route, you just helped me out.

Gripe: Instragram video sucks!  How is it possible that they have no scroll for reverse and forward.  No native link to the original video poster?  Madness.
That drives me crazy--not knowing whether you've watched 1% or 90% of the video.  It's one reason I don't have an instagram account.  Although my dog does, and he uses it every day.  I guess when he watches a video, whatever part he's watching is the best video ever for him.

Gear Talk / Re: Removing glued paddle handle
« on: May 20, 2019, 09:35:55 PM »
This is probably old hat to most, but I just removed my old QB Kahana Handle and replaced
it with a new one.  So, I thought I would add my experience to this thread.

Below is a pic of the 9 year old handle - you may be able to see the cracks.

I'd purchased the paddle back in 2010.  I would turn the paddle upside down to use the handle
for support walking over tricky reef parts but after about seven years the handle developed a leak
in the seam.  For a couple of years I just used crazy glue to patch it - that would keep it from leaking
for a couple of months and then the leak would start again.  At some point, the cracks got bigger
so I switched to two part 30 minute epoxy.  That worked pretty well, but then that peeled off.
Finally, I noticed the handle was starting to twist a bit and that there was now a horizontal crack
in addition to the vertical ones.  I was concerned it handle would break off, maybe cut me,
the paddle could sink (not too likely), and it would be even tougher to fix/replace if it broke off.

That is the UGLIEST handle I've ever seen. It looks like you could get MRSA just touching it. I'd whack that off, remove with rubber gloves, and add a new one that doesn't look like ET with a bad case of psoriasis.
I saw that photo without reading the thread and thought maybe Subber had found Strand Leper's finger.

Given there are a couple hundred million people in the U.S., undoubtedly some might say Trump not avoiding the draft was proof he was stupid, although I don't know of any myself.

But there's some irony in that hypothetical example, given that Trump actually did say of McCain, "He's not a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured."  Similar sentiment to the hypothetical one, but actually said by Trump.

Pono....”Feed sources for news organizations.” And that makes them unbiased? They would be fired?... you’re just joking, right? Please say you’re joking.
No, he didn't say the fact that they are feed sources for news organizations makes them unbiased. He didn't even say they were unbiased.  In fact, he said the opposite:  "Of course, there is intrinsic and extrinsic bias in everything."

His post makes sense, if you read what he actually wrote.

Plates like that drive me crazy.  I have no idea what that one is supposed to mean.
You just need to get your thought waves in the right frequency.

What a bunch of bs. You don’t even believe your own bull shit.
Rider--you're out of line--again.  If this is all too tedious for you (your word), or too difficult to keep up with or understand, step away.

Remember your last comment to me?    "It must suck to be as dumb as you."  There's no place for that here.  Getting another of your comments deleted should have been a clue for you.  Following up your hostile digs at people with an inane comment ending in "cheers" doesn't excuse you.

Everyone else is managing to have reasonable conversations here.  Comment like an adult or keep quiet.

Here's one of several similar charts about media bias:

https://www.adfontesmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Media-Bias-Chart_4.0_8_28_2018-min.jpg

This one has left-to-right bias left to right, and false-to-factual bottom to top.  Always the possibility it's biased itself.

Notice that here, in the enlightened Standupzone,  TRUMP is at 46 percent after being in office for 2 years.

JP
Is that relevant to whether there should be an electoral system?

What I see is plenty of people here would vote for Trump, given those choices, which isn't surprising.  I also see that slightly more people would vote Democratic than Republican, which isn't surprising.  I assume not all of those would vote for a Democrat that wasn't the one they want.  I'd guess actual polls during past presidencies would have the incumbent doing better after two years, but I don't know. But again, all irrelevant to the electoral issue.

It's relevant based on the idea that Hillary supporters and other dems are the ones clamoring for the EC to be gotten rid of.
I'm not either one.  Trump himself was clamoring to get rid of it before he was elected. I'd guess if he'd won the popular vote and lost the electoral vote he'd be clamoring to end it again.

If Democrats supported something you liked, would you reject it because they supported it?  I base what I prefer on the merits of the arguments, not who's doing the arguing.

With the electoral college in place, presidential candidates naturally need to get electoral votes from multiple regions and therefore have to build campaign platforms with a widespread national focus.  Without the college, many regions in the US would be ignored to the benefit of more highly populated metropolitan areas.  Rural regions would be marginalized for sure.  In this case we are not trying to be equal, at best we might be somewhat equitable...

I'm not saying that there can't be reform, but it's not as simple as switching off a light bulb.
I agree. There was a good discussion a year or two ago here with some good arguments in favor, or at least against a straight popular vote.  The arguments I don't buy are the ones (not from you) about keeping it because it's there, keeping it because people that question it are sore-loser Democrats, etc. Those kind of arguments don't counter the good arguments people are making against the electoral system, they just--ironically--make it sound like there are no good arguments for it.
