We had a really fun run yesterday in very good Maliko conditions (lets give it an 8 out of 10). We were not only graced by the conditions, but also to have with us many of the newest, most cutting edge boards being produced for this niche of the sport. I rode a proto of the new F16. Chan grabbed My Foote 14. Also, the F-14 production with rudder, A custom F-14 rudderless, and the Penetrator. Where to start? Mark Raaphorst has been working on the F-16 and has refined it in some really outstanding ways. A while back, I had called that board the gold standard of unlimited (over 14 foot with a rudder) Maliko boards, and I want to refresh that. The tweaks are so subtle, that you would have to know to look for them, but the change in performance is really stunning. The big one's are that there is now a subtle concave up front which leads into a channel and then double in the tail. The volume has been pulled out towards the squarer rails and the deck has a very light concave. All of this serves to take away the minor twitchiness of the original. At my size (185 lbs) this board is insanely stable for its width. Additionally, volume has been added to the nose (the deck vee-if that is a term-is higher an more pronounced than on the original) and the tip (last foot) has more flip. It is very hard to pearl this thing. If you accept that an average rider is going to fall a few times on a blasting Maliko run, I would guess that this board will roughly half that number of diggers. I mostly rode this board on the run (spent 2 miles on the Penetrator and 1 mile on a custom F 14), so I will let the other folks who went sound in on the gear they rode. Let me finish by posting some photos that Darrell Wong shot (taken back in Jan), courtesy of SIC. Scott Trudon, showing off the flip tip on the new F-16. He is convinced that 16 is the ideal length for Maliko. I love this shot. Scott Trudon again, just starting to lose the little cup he has been working and moving forward to milk it a little more. You can even see him eyeing the better dip just to his right. What a capture! Mark R on a proto for the new F-14 mold. An F 18 custom designed more for flatter water, but Alan Cadiz makin it look good on a little runner.

There has been a bit of category discussion here lately (maybe too much), but while we are at it, any thoughts on ditching the Crystal Ball (forecasts) category which is hardly used, by including it in General or Sessions, and combining the Surf perspectives and Ettiquette categories which are also slow movers?
Lemmeno.

Dave Kalama has been out absolutely killing here it on a smaller board recently, just gouging the crap out of waves in a way that is mean looking even for him. I was way stoked to switch off and get to spend a half hour on that board today. Thing is unreal, even with me on it. Very quick rail to rail, projects fast down the line, and digs hard at the bottom to set it up. The Naish faithful have a lot to look forward to, and not long to wait. If you have already tried the other Naish short boards, this one is a way different beast, with Dave's input all over it. It has been prototyped extensively, and that shows. The one I rode was the second to final (the final one was sent in to make the production model).
Add this one to the rip list. Cool times.

Well, we sent out two in one week, but I didn't think there would be any complaints Clay sent over this shot, and I wanted to share it pronto. Also, some unsolicited props to Clay and the gang for the work they are doing over at Stand Up Journal. For a new sport like ours to have a top rate mag like this is really unusual and...well, lucky. I got to see the PDF for the next issue, and it was all I could do not to share it here . The last issue was IMO really strong, but this thing is a freakin' mind blower. Anyways, on to the 'Sup. This gem came to us super last minute as we went to press with the Spring issue. If we'd gotten it a few days earlier we might have wiped out a couple more shots to make this a two-page spread. It was taken by Maine photographer Nick Lavecchia of Maine during his annual trip to the North Shore. -Clay Feeter, Publisher of Standup Journal www.standupjournal.com

I looked at the AM forecast and saw 1-2 feet and almost skipped it. No wind, though. Gave it a second thought and headed down for a peek. Pulled in and didn't see anyone, but it was so calm, I figured I would paddle around for a bit. I was glad I did right off - No Ka Oi: Up the way I saw some guys were already out: Better yet, there was some head high coming in a little further over: Went over for some of that, and sat to take it in for a minute. A few friends paddled out. Shared some waves with Daddy Dog. Then Brenda and Mark came up. Mark let me check out the new paddle he is producing. Very cool. Anyhow, a quick paddle turned into 3 hours. Nothin beats it!

Please use the poll options above to register your entry for your most used race board (even if you never plan on racing it). This can be a downwinder, flat water or distance board.

It has been a while since we polled the gear that is getting the most water time by Standupzone users. Please use the poll options above to register your entry for your most used board for surf. Not to leave out Distance, Race and Downwinder enthusiasts, we did a separate poll for those here http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=3015.0

The 30-35+ Kona wind was on it from early morning. I snapped a couple of shots from the bluff. It was not as big as expected but still had size (maybe some island blocking?). Sorry for the point and shoot quality.
