The Shape Shack / Re: Help with my dimensions

Thanks again. Maybe I will look into doing a stitch and glue or strip built paddle board. At 17 or 18 ft it's gonna be heavy though. CLC has the 14ft kaholo kit but I already ride a 14x27 Tahoe zypher. I really want to see what a SUP the length of a sea kayak has to offer.

Thanks for all the input. Why is glassing a paddle board so difficult while kayak builders make it sound easy?

Yes I will be glassing it. I haven't glasses anything before but I have done some extensive research on glassing. I was getting into kayak building when I found out that I actually prefer paddle boarding by alot.  Building this longer SUP is my way of trying to rival the speed and range of my 17ft CLC sea kayak.

The Shape Shack / Help with my dimensions

I'm fixing to start my first SUP build and am a little lost on how thick I need to be and also on what shape I need for my application. I want to go somewhere around 17 to 18 feet long, 26" wide, but I'm not sure about what thickness I need to support myself at 210 pounds. I paddle in St Andrews bay in Panama City  FL which can see some rough chop but for the most part is just flatwater paddling. I like speed and want something that can travel with little effort since the island I want to paddle to is a 14 mile round trip at the most. I also find myself having to move upwind quite often. Just looking for help about design for my purpose along with deminsions for best weight support for a heavier paddler. Thanks.

Also is there any good videos out there or pictorials that can walk me through the process?

The Shape Shack / Re: Where to get eps foam for a longer sup?

So can anyone help me figure out how thick I would need to be for a 17 or 18 foot SUP to support 210lbs comfortably. I ride a 14x27 now but was thinking of moving down to 25" wide. Also don't I need a piece of foam much thicker than what the finished thickness is, so that I can carve the rocker shape? Thanks.

Man, thank you all. So my big take away from this thread so far is that the fiberglass and epoxy is the main structure, the foam is just for shape thus making joints less of an issue. Best online supplier of eps foam? Can I source local from a hardware or building supply store?

Hey folks I've been researching shaping my own board but so far have only found eps blanks up to 14ft long online. If I build a board I want to do something long like 17ft. Where can I get longer eps blanks from? Is there a way to splice them together? Sorry if it sounds dumb, I'm in the preliminary stages of researching and don't know much about it. Thanks.

Hey guys i got my first displacement board and its not stacking as well as my first two planning hulls did. I put the 14ft displacement board on bottom due to being longer with the shirter board on top. The shorter board is wider though meaning the straps reall arent contacting the bottom board allowing for more side to side movement than im used to. Is it ok to run the shorter board on bottom so that both boards will have mating surface with the straps? Also due to the displacement hull shape it woukd cause the other board to be cocked if that makes any sense. How would you guys stack these boards? Thanks for any info.

SUP General / Fins for surfing
« on: February 23, 2017, 05:01:42 AM »
Well i just bought a tahoe zephyr 14 that i love which moved my wife from a 10'6 boga mahina to my 12ft boga el rey. I want to take to 10'6 mahina and set it up for surfing. The board has the center fin that came with the board but it also has side fin boxes. What is the best way to set the fins up for a beginner sup surfer. Thanks.

I'm trying to learn how to post pictures so I can show you guys the  racks but apparently I'm doing something wrong. I tried to link to a pic in my Google photos but it didn't work. I don't have any other picture upload services that I use so I'm not sure where to go from here.

Thanks for the reply. If I do the suck test I should basically get no inhalation right? I'm looking for it to be a air tight seal still correct? Thanks for showing me the puka patch, I'll be ordering them asap. If they don't get here before Sunday can I just use clear packing tape for the one trip?

SUP General / Tahoe zypher 14 cracks
« on: February 16, 2017, 01:20:28 PM »
Hey guys I just picked up a used 14ft tahoe zypher. On the underside of the board I noticed a few surface spots that look like paint chips, I'd like to know if they need to be addressed before going on the water. Also where the bottom starts rolling into the side there is a pretty decent looking 2" crack (still just the surface layer), the original owner has epoxied the spot but it wasn't sanded down. I would like to repair it right before hitting the water sunday. I don't care about looks as much as functionality, looks can come later, I just want to get my new investment right and not screw it up with water damage or human error damage. Upon first googling i see alot abojt solarez, is that what i need to fix my issues. Thanks for any info.

SUP General / Re: How much harder is it to ride a narrower board?

Thanks. The other thread was made before I bought and paddled my two boga boards. I was hoping that by giving my riding experiences on those boards someone could pin point whether or not I could ride the gusu. I guess it's just something I'll have to try out if possible.

« on: July 18, 2016, 11:23:57 AM »
Hey folks I currently have a 12'x31 boga el rey that is very stable for my size (220lb). My wife has a 10'6 x 29 boga mahina that I find a little more tippy but I get around ok occasionally falling on 180 degree turns. Ive been eyeing a gusu 14x27 race board on craigslist but am wondering if I can handle it. My question is how much more stable/unstable will the 14x27 be vs my wife's 10'6x29? Both have manufactuer ratings of about 190lbs but I seem to handle the 10'6 ok enough. Thanks for any info.

Thanks for the two votes of confidence on the bogas. I've offered 1200 for both, we will see what happens. Anyone know about the overall quality of boga products? First hand experience?

I know starboard is really popular but the board I linked here looked really weathered. I did inquire about it incase the others fall through.
