Technique / Re: Hips and the drive.
« on: August 02, 2016, 07:22:24 PM »
A lot of good info in those vids.  Forward ankle flexion and reach are key with a strong catch and heavy pull.  This can launch you from glide into planing mode when DW paddling in short period medium sized swells and fresh breeze.

Last DW on the weekend - actually slowed down on the Bullet 14V2 by dragging my paddle planing - as the board was pearling too much into waves ahead even standing back.  Conditions were steep short period swell in full whitecaps which were not optimal for the board.  In smaller swells later that same run - that board easily skipped over waves to the swells ahead.  My wife on our M-14 also enjoyed the run.  She cannot plane but she catches plenty of glides.

So basically if you take from each of those vids certain specific techniques discussed - you can paddle a lot better and have more fun as well.  This vid is also good -

Gear Talk / Re: Will this PFD work for paddling coastal waters?
« on: August 02, 2016, 07:20:50 PM »
My wife uses the harness inflatable and I use a waist inflatable.  The benefit to the harness is that the PFD is already placed over your head.  The con is that it is a more bulky and less comfortable.  So definitely use that for now.  In adverse conditions - we both use a full size approved PFD.  We also always wear leashes in the ocean.  Losing contact and having your board drift away especially in cold water can be very dangerous.

SIC Bullet 14V2 SCC - good for medium size swells DW - flat water ok - durability very good - very good in steep messy cross chop - good initial stability - good secondary stability - 26.5 lbs - pricey DW board new or used - keeper

SB All Star CS 23 - good for small size swells DW - flat water very good  - durability very good - poor in steep messy cross chop - ok initial stability - ok secondary stability - 24.0 lbs - extremely pricey AW board new and very pricey used - keeper

SUP General / Re: NEVER use foam pool noodles for soft rack!
« on: July 30, 2016, 09:57:34 PM »
Kinda odd.  We use pool noodles on our Yakima round bars and use thick SIC pads as spacers.  Been using the same ones for years with no probs.  At hwy speeds the boards are on solid.  Were your straps snugged up enough?

From what it sounds like though - you may have been using them right on your roof and not on bars.

Gear Talk / Re: SUP HighAspect paddle – good choice?
« on: July 30, 2016, 11:55:00 AM »
We like the old 78 SB HA for distance as it has a nice comfortable balance of catch and power phase.  We also have something like the Kanaha which works perfect for DW and is 116.  That bigger blade is interestingly the best blade to use on our very easy to propel 23" board.

But if you keep practicing without injury with your Kanaha you probs are "gonna be fine".  There is a substantial power difference between the old SB HA 78 and 85 and 93.  We started with the 116 Vantage R8.5 from day one and use it the most.  We went to smaller blades for the exact reason you note.  Our smallest is 67.

It seems blade area and shape and blade angle are quite personal and subjective for what works best for you.  Shaft length and flex also impact comfort and power.  So is it a HA good choice - well that depends.   ;)

For an all rounder would go FX12 then Vapor then X12 then TRX.  But if the 2015 SIC models were on sale - would probs pick one of those.  Would opt for the SCC as well.

But seeing that you have tested them already -> you should have a pretty good idea which one suits what you want to do best.  Maybe if you detail out what you like and dislike about each - you can narrow down your choice.   ;)

SUP General / Re: SUP Demo Fees
« on: July 25, 2016, 06:05:27 PM »
The retailers here demo no more than 3 brands and and maybe 15 boards total.  Trying to demo each of your specific boards firsthand will pretty tough.  The D2 and SIC are pretty good boards though.  Out of them would go for the X-14 Pro in SCC if available.   ;)

Used the SIC 7.0 and hit 7.2 mph upwind and 7.0 mph DW in about 4kts of breeze today.  It definitely is a keeper.  Works a charm for DB as well since it does not broach in messy cross chop nor broach angling across swells.  It makes the board a tad tippier though.  Should note the foil profiles may not be same between fins of the same size.  We have 2 different foil profiles now.  Odd.  When you look at the GPX tracks - the 7.0 moves around the most.  The AS23 with SIC 7.0 fin is fairly speedy.   :)

The safer route is to refuse accepting the item if you see any damage to the box.  In our circumstance we could have done that.  And we were lucky.  But we did note on the BOL that there was damage to the box and the contents were subject to inspection.  We took a video and photos as we unpackaged the board at the depot and there was a friend present as a witness.

Probably what should have been done was to contact the retailer and have them deal with the shipper directly to resolve the matter.  This way you are taken out of the equation as the consumer.  Problem with that is - in this instance anyways - you would have been delayed and inconvenienced from getting a perfectly undamaged board.  You may have had to return another day.

The damage we saw looked like it was from the forklift crushing the void in the box as it lifted the package.  The damage looked somewhat minor in that way - and did not look like the package was dropped or suffered serious damage.  But sometimes it is better to be safer than sorry.   ;)

BW has this shipping damage policy -

"By signing the delivery receipt, you have accepted the article to be in perfect condition. If the receipt is signed without noting any damage, then a claim cannot be processed.

* If you feel there may be possible damage to the shipment even though there is no visible damage to the shipping box, write “SUBJECT TO INSPECTION” when signing for freight"

If you fail, your chemist totally blew it. There are drugs out there now tailored to you personally that are undetectable.

Haha!  Spot on!  They say you have to be an idiot to get caught.  Especially when they say you simply have to NOT answer the door when they come knocking for a test.  Just hit the floor and cover your ears!  Testing protocols are a joke -> in and out of competition.  ;D ;D ;D

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: Types of exercises that benefit SUP
« on: July 24, 2016, 05:34:50 PM »
Understand that size is more a result of diet than actual training programs. You have guys at 135 that are amazingly strong. It's mostly about CNS (central nervous system) adaption to load. Strength training+conditioning+Sup= you win. Ask Danny Ching..... I hear he's pretty good

Very insightful.  ;)  ;D

But diet is key as well.  We completely changed our diet 2-1/2 years ago and that has been a huge part of fat loss and muscle growth.  Really is amazing what can occur in middle age without PEDs or supplements or anything.  Just nutritious whole foods consumed in the right portions at the right time.  Anyone can do it really but application of knowledge and a burning desire are key.   :)

The more money the more PEDs.  Lesnar was reportedly paid $2M for being on PEDs in his last fight at UFC 200.  Haha.  But UFC was just bought for $4B give or take - so all relative.

Seemed foolish but whatcha gonna do.  They told me sign -> then open and inspect outside.  No option -> otherwise no box for you!  Kinda like a shipper nazi mentality.    :o ;D

Was told that may be their policy.
