As noted young Osaka looks very grounded.  But in response to PPD.  This from a couple months back ->

The former world No. 1 posted to her Instagram account Monday night saying she has been battling with postpartum depression, and that the root of her struggles last week was that, "Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom."

https://www.cbc.ca/sports/tennis/serena-williams-postpartum-depression-1.4775866

She is transitioning to being a new mom.  The "cheating" matter really got under her skin as no doubt being a good role model mom has major importance for her.  But in standing up for sexism and equality for verbal abuse -> she may have undermined all this.  This vid may put in better context her position.

Serena's coach freely admitted to giving hand signals which is "cheating" ... and that all coaches do it.  This in complete contradiction to Serena's position on the matter.  She was so pissed on learning he said this -> she sent him a text just before entering her press conference.

"We don't have signals.  We have never discussed signals."

Was asked in her press conference how she will explain this incident to her daughter when she grows up.  Her response in part ->

"Always stay gracious and stay humble and that's the lesson I think we can all learn from this.  Just like I did."

Neither Williams nor Earley were prepared to reveal exactly what was said to the lineswoman but the New York tabloids, which splashed the story across the back pages yesterday morning, were not so reticent. Suffice to say, it was not exactly ladylike: "I swear to God I'll fucking take the ball and shove it down your fucking throat."

Serena can give it pretty harsh when she wants.  So yes "thief" was kinda subdued for her in this instance.  But sexism and equality.  Hmmm?

At least "emotional" Mac etc was smart enough to get called for spewing profanity as a first "warning" most times.  Not dumb enough to be assessed a lost point or lost game like Serena.  Worst as most note -> is the lost shine Naomi will have the rest of her life looking back at the win on court and the booing at the awards ceremony.  That was a true disgrace.  Was really quite revolting to watch actually.  Especially the comments made by the presenters.

Still fully mired in controversy and sexism.  Dickheads yes.  BS galore yes.  Williams vs Osaka -> 0-2.  No fluke.  Coaching foul was just a "warning".  But Serena simply could not let it go and came unhinged as Osaka fired back winning shots.  Osaka simply did not crumble under the booing and center stage pressure.  She played within herself -> one point at a time.  Ramos is hardcore yes.  But sexism.  Hmm?

About history with Ramos in Williams press conference right after losing -> "he's always been a great umpire".

"The sexism narrative also failed to reflect the statistics from the US Open, which showed 86 code violations were handed out to male players in the course of the fortnight, but only 22 to women."

Young Osaka played to win.  Fantastic victory vs her "idol".  Only 20 and mega poised on center court.  Cool $3.8 mil for the kid.  Seems very grounded.  Bravo.

Serena.  Not so much.  ::)

Traditional paddleboarders call what we paddle a “SUP”. I suggest we do the same.
I guess. I think its something not to get too worried or worked up about. Soccer - football. As long as it sees feet on boards, they can call it whatever they like in my view ...
Yeah around here most view "paddleboard" as SUP.  That term is used quite interchangeably.  So not much to argue about.  But in the vid "boy bands" can be deemed somewhat offensive.  ;D

"My question for the group is, what have you found works for you. Whether it's a mix of traditional strength training with SUP mixed in. A mix of cycling, swimming, running, etc. mixed with SUP, or just straight paddling all of the time."

Variation.  But what helped most was getting DEXA scans to define progress.  Is an accurate way to track muscle fat BMD vs type of training over time.  The detailed scan info pinpoints exactly what needs work.  Has actually helped a ton to maintain motivation and focus over the years.  Takes most of the guesswork and speculation out of the equation.  ;)
... Again, the primary goal is overall fitness and longevity without injuries. Being able to see your obliques and lower ab muscles is a nice by-product.
100%.  Injuries is the fundamental aspect for me moving towards 60.  Yesterday felt great and was doing 5x5 very heavy DL.  My very last rep heard and felt a little "pop".  Lowered the weight and felt my lower back muscles tighten up and kinda get real sore bending over.  Long and short is that it is already getting back to normal today after some stretching last night and rehab with weights today.  Def a wake-up call.  As just a split second lapse in form is all it takes sometimes.

Guess is that all the development to opposing and supporting muscles really helped keep this mishap from becoming a big problem.  Def counting my lucky stars.  Gotta keep perfect technique.  ;)

... Could you paddle the Sprint as hard as your All Star at the end?
I found that I could on completely flatwater (with the occasional wobble if I applied a poor stroke) but as soon as i got onto choppier stuff, no ...
Unless you have the 23 Sprint under complete control in slop and chop it is often better to stick with that if coming from the 24.5 AS.  Moving to the 21.5 Sprint is that one step tippier and often you will not see a gain in speed once conditions get rough.  On flat though -> the speed advantage over the 24.5 AS is undeniable and massive as noted.

So basically if you are skilled enough get the 21.5 Sprint.  Otherwise get the 23 and push it to the limit.  Best to do timed runs in similar conditions.  Ex.  24.5 AS was same upwind as my AS23 -> faster cross wind -> and slower downwind.  Overall the AS23 was 3% faster over my 5 mile loop.  My suspicion is that the 23 Sprint would be about the same -> while the 21.5 Sprint slower over that same route unless dead flat.  Note we virtually never get dead flat conditions in the ocean where we are.

Most around here refer to a SUP as a "paddleboard" as most have no clue what a prone board is.  But the ICF notion that present day SUP originated in Africa was somewhat interesting.  ;D

Would take up easy on the offer.  But def get a board "right for you" -> not what is good for someone else.  ;)

Thanks a lot Bryce for the informal yet informative chat. :)

Thanks for that. I recorded that straight after some banter on here that gave me a few ideas. I'm also hoping to get some data out too soon once I can get hold of one again.
Nice summary.  ;)

I know that board.  Start on the easier V2 -> then progress to the Bayonet.  More technical so requires a higher skill set.  Very good for smaller bumps.  But not nearly as surfy as the round tailed M14 by any stretch.  This review is pretty accurate.

Seems pretty much the same, as you can see the nose is constantly getting in and out of the water and the board just goes straight. It is fast but not as much fun as I would like it to be.

Would a dedicated DW board with more nose rocker stop the nose from diving all the time like that?
If the rider timed and paddled less the nose would not go in and out of the water so much.  His approach was to stay pretty stationary in his surf stance and plow thru.  He could have turned more but it would require more finesse weighting an edge.  A small maneuverable fin does help with that.  Overall it looks like he had good fun and was going pretty fast.

Since the AS has a rounded cutting boof it cannot cut into the wave trough compared to a M14 or Bullet V2.  That gives it much more tendency to straighten out all the time.  But looking at the footage again it seemed the nose was not diving that much.  He was just accelerating and staying stationary instead of stepping back a bit more.

When on my AS23 am always cutting down and across the trough looking not to go straight into the bump face ahead.  The 24.5 however handles bumps much better as the added volume allows that board to skip over waves and plane really fast.  But as bumps get bigger and steeper more and more rocker etc does def help.  So just depends.  Mostly the skill of the rider dictates how often the nose plows into the wave ahead -> but board selection is a big part of that as well.  In the pic below notice how round the AS is vs my other DW boards.  ;)

Watching Conner Baxter and many other skilled paddlers shows that the AllStar surfs fine.. If you’re getting the opposite rail turning thing happening I’d guess it’s more about lack of skill and/or correct technique rather than a problem with the board ...
Yep this was my guess as well.  For DW the AS requires a pretty decent skill level.  This vid from a while back reviews a bunch of boards that may also be of interest.

Yep.  The All Star feels quite stiff on a wave.  It does require a ton of finesse to turn and carve.  My preference for that is the same as you.  M14 or probs better the 12'6.  ;)

.. I currently use a 2018 14x28 Allstar and despite being able to catch many bumps with it, I feel that the AS does not surf well and the only way of steering it is by using the "reverse steering" all the time which is not much fun. I normally downwind in small-ish bay chop with rather short wave length, where the nose of the board is most of the time just pearling on the crest of the bump in front if the board is square to the bumps ...
Here is a guy on a DW run using the AS28.  Is your experience like this or something else?

Edit:  I have paddled the 28 for a short demo upwind then back.  It seemed more designed for DW vs AW.  It really liked getting pushed from behind.  Plus used the 24.5 on a DW run.  That board jumped on a plane fast.  Was very slippery.  I have the 23 and it is a must to get back far enough to keep the proper trim.  But cutting across waves DW is not its forte with its slipping cutting boof.  ;)
