Random / Polar Bear Swim
« on: January 02, 2018, 05:50:04 PM »
More like a quick run - dive in head first - then run back to dry land kinda thing.  But did that twice yesterday.  Once at 10am with friends and again at 1pm with other friends.  Oddly the second time was quite ok feeling.  As air temps warmed from 2C to 3C.  Only my second year doing this.  But is getting to be a tradition now as 7 noobs joined in on the fun.  Water temps maybe around 7C again.

"About 1,500 people participated in last year’s event. The largest one was in 2014 when 2,550 people entered the frigid waters on Vancouver’s coast."

Random / Plain Jane AWD daily driver
« on: November 06, 2017, 12:19:15 PM »
"It feels like the entire car, wrapping around you in a single motion, evenly slips in and out of a corner as one."

"There’s no big drama about it. Subarus have viscous differentials, sort of juggling the power around the corners of the car, and it all sort of meshes and globularizes into unified motion. It’s not abrupt. It’s not sharp. It’s creamy peanut butter plastering over all the little holes on a piece of bread."

Get the Impreza with the new global architecture.  You will not regret it.  Not like the old flexy flexy.  So smooth in a 4 wheel drift it is silly fun with all elec off.  While DSC is nice for the city -> it feels like crap on ice and snow.  Tried to get the car out of sorts and the thing just did not want to slip on very slippery sheet ice.  Perfect daily driver for my wife -> but def get the stick with high tech snows.  100% rally inspired for sure.  Low COG.  Major fun.

Any other good AWD cars that are fun?

Downwind and Racing / 2016 SIC Bullet 17.4 Changes
« on: August 06, 2015, 12:04:15 PM »
Here's a link to SIC's 2016 catalog (link came in an advertising email from SIC on July 30).

All sorts of interesting things in there:  new boards, new sizes, new components.

I have no idea on availability.

Thanks for that Cascade - thought that this deserved a new thread for the DW racing crew.

Very interesting to see the addition of Innegra reinforcing and a change to F.A.S.T. pushrods with integrated standard fin box on the Bullet 14V2 - F16.0 - and Bullet 17.4.  Having the option to hot-swap switch from goofy to regular may be useful in certain situations depending upon the wind and swell direction.

SIC notes that they have been testing this new steering mechanism for over a couple of years already.  But sometimes the old tried and tested SS cable is better than the "new system" cantilevered C-spring.

For any in the know that have tried or have this "revolutionized" patented setup on a prototype or custom board please chime in.

Gear Talk / Best SUP board to Rent
« on: May 24, 2015, 11:03:17 AM »
Our yacht club will be installing a SUP rack for members and is considering renting out boards to them.  Any thoughts or other suggestions on light - easy to paddle boards for new paddlers 40 to 80 yo > and between 120 to 250 lbs.  Will be used for paddling around 4 miles in the ocean or stored on boats to be used over a weekend.

Tested this board yesterday and it worked fine for a large range of paddlers - further it was quite lightweight and easy to carry.

Thanks
