Downwind and Racing / Re: Light DW <25 knots contenders

That is an even bigger budget  :P. not going to see one of these used fro a long time.
Maybe if we get a Canadian distributor for SIC and 17.1 board can lend safely here.

What you have not tried the Vapor!!! You have been seriously remiss here.

I still try to get my ACe-GT out but for shuttle it is a little bit of a problem...

Downwind and Racing / Light DW <25 knots contenders

Seems that there are a few kicking around some even approved by Burchas :-)

1) SIC Bayonet
2) Infinity Downtown
3) Jimmy Lewis Rail
4) Bullet V2

I am wondering if these provide a higher fun factor than the all around boards that can downwind in under 25 knots flatwinder, downbreezer and light downwind?

1) Bark Vapor Ghost
2) SIC RS
3) Naish Maliko

And that is without going into clogs.
I do like the easy life of having a go to board like the Vapor that will not let you down regardless of the conditions.
When the summer comes I am always wondering if I could get a few more bumps in light conditions by having a newer generation light downwind board.

Thanks Yuval.

How are either of the Bayonnet when wind dies or you need to quarter or upwind to get to the bumps?

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I thought I’d still throw it out. I test paddled a ONE SUP Evo 12’ 6” x 24” this morning and really liked the board. Well, I suppose that’s not really true. Truth is, I REALLY, REALLY liked the board. Could well be a new addition to the quiver soon.

My only concern is that I tested it in dead flat water. I’m just curious if anyone out there has paddled this board in any kind of choppy conditions, and if so how did it handle?

Oh, and one other thing. Does anyone know if there were any changes to this board from 2017 to 2018. The board I paddled was a 2017. It’s for sale, but I may also have an option to get a new one but would like to first of all know that the 2018 is the same as the 2017.

Thanks so much for any information you might be able to provide.

Just drop a line to Peter Allen on FB and he should be able to tell you. Luc.

I have to say, I don't know if its the state of the market but i'm not hearing of anything intriguing for 2019. No sneak peaks, no nothing.  :(

Some of the 2018 new models are still almost an unknown....

If it is the one on SUP used boards for Sale Canada then it is the TWC surfy older design not the new Downwinder design.

Yes I was looking at the Mako 28 to add to the other ones and was reminded that there is a big difference between full retail and distributor pricing :-)
It would have be something like $250 CAD with shipping from Oz. Just cannot justify that even to myself. The SIC 7.0 at $80 or so is really a great value.
The LA fins are also reasonable in price when you can get them directly from Larry.

I did get a deal on my fins....otherwise.

Thanks for all the details.
I have taken a different approach to fins lately.
I have the Sonic on both my Vapor and my Ace-GT for all water conditions (flat, choppy, tide, light downwind) and only change fin for a downwind if conditions get bigger.
It does simplify things quite a bit and I am curious to see if running the same fin brings any improvement in all aspect of paddling.

btw: I seem to be a little faster with the Sonic over than the Mako 37 (which use to be my go to fin) on both the Ace-Gt and the Vapor.

Anybody has paddled a 2018 Sidewinder (NOT THE 2017)?
I am curious to know how it compares with the SIC RS - they do have a little bit of similar look.

Boothy likes to lead from the front. So he may be picking the TT fin because he thinks it will give him an advantage in the first 200m of the race, to get in front. Lots of tracking and low drag.

Makes sense. He fell only a couple of times on the Spring coffin yesterday so it works for him.
I actually really like the Mako TT myself and was really surprised by it in small chop/downbreezer.
I have the 37 and the 44 but i am using the Black Project Sonic instead of the 37 lately as the size seems to work better with my two favourite boards.
The 44 i use with the Vapor when conditions are on the bigger side of what we have here i.e. 25-30 and hip high.

You mean that is why the 2018 Starbord have such thick, high sides, so it fits more sponsors stickers?
I am assuming that Boothy could freely choose from the whole VMG range of fins, so curious why the Time Trial on an open water race choppy race. There must be a logic to it .....

seriously he was on 21.5 wide board, Large blade & time trial fin

You mean he was using the VMG Mako Time Trial - 9" large base 7.5" deep fin?
I have always found it a great fin that felt more able than just sprinting but I woudl be curious to know the criteria that top paddlers use to select their equipment. I have always assume either of two 1) what makes them faster measured or assumed or 2) what they are used to i.e. stuck it in the bag and keep using it
