The Shape Shack / Latest Build ... Tic Tac Two
« on: March 24, 2019, 12:56:16 PM »
I've really been enjoying my 7-0 Tic Tac so I thought I'd build another with a few changes.

Design Changes from 7-0 Tic Tac
- 5" shorter
- 1/4" wider
- 1/8" thicker
- Lower nose rocker
- 2+1 only (no quad option)

Build Changes
- Ordered the Marko blank and CNC cut from Bashams instead of directly from Marko.  The board was cut from a Marko Stringerless 7-0 SUP blank (1.5# EPS).   Bashams did a fabulous job for a lot less than it costs from Marko.
- Did not seal the blank with Z-Seal (I'm getting lazy).

Glassing will be 6+6/6 the same as on my 7-0 Tic Tac.   I am shooting for a finished weight under 10lb.   Not sure if skipping the sealing step will add weight.  I dropped it off for glassing earlier today so hope to have it in the water sometime in April.

Here's the design plus a photo of the original Tic Tac.

The Shape Shack / New Quiver Addition ... The 7' LOG
« on: February 05, 2018, 04:16:28 PM »
Background
---
I have really been enjoying my 7' x 24" Greedy Beaver and I wanted to try to see how much smaller/narrower I could go.  My board search criteria:

- no longer than 7'
- no wider than 23"
- 68-72L of volume (Guild Factor around 0.95 to 1.0)
- inexpensive with easy resale

The only production boards that I could find that meet this criteria were softboards so I ended up getting a 7' Odysea LOG.    It is 7' x 22" with a full foil and boxy rails to maximize volume.  Even though the rails are boxy they have a lot less foam than my Bean Bag SUP (see comparison below).

Ride Report
---
The official specs on this board state it has 72L but I don't believe it.  After taking many measurements, recreating it in Shape 3D and paddling it I believe it is closer to 68-69L.  I have stand up paddled a longboard with 71L (Firewire Special T) and it was easy to pop up and paddle.  The 7' LOG sinks like a rock the second I try to stand up.  If I am not perfectly positioned and don't get a couple of quick strokes in I fall in and have to repeat the whole process.  It can be a little exhausting. I am getting it dialed in but after a handful of sessions it still sometimes takes multiple attempts to get standing.

Once standing the board is surprisingly stable but takes a lot of work to keep it going.  The whole board is 4-6" under water unless I am in full paddle mode.  It is fun to surf but does not have the responsiveness of a hard board with real fins.

Conclusion
---
Riding the LOG is a fun challenge but is not a board I would SUP every day.  After a handful of sessions it has improved my surfing and balance on my other boards.  My experience with the 7' LOG makes me want to shape something similar with a little more volume (70L-72L) that I could use daily.

I'll accept any reasonable price if I know it will go to a fellow zoner that will enjoy it as much as I do.

Pick up in Orange County CA only.

Not sure if it's the lack of surf the last couple of weeks or seeing @Fanman's and @surfafrica's cool new sticks but I got the urge for a new build.   After taking my 8' x 22.5" x 3.25" Wavestorm longboard out for a paddle (I was bored) and finding it surprisingly stable I thought a mini longboard shape would be something fun, different and challenging.

So I would like to present my latest build, the Greedy Beaver  ....

What happens when you take a longboard and make it shorter, and re-distribute the foam into the outline and thickness? Answer, you get the Greedy Beaver.  A midlength surfboard with retro glide and shortboard manueverability and just enough volume to use as a SUP.

Dims: 7' x 24" x 3.85" x 75L

OUTLINE: Compressed longboard outline, a true crossover board with midlength retro glide and shortboard maneuverability.

CONTOURS: Rolled vee entry, single concave through the center to vee double concave out the tail for flowing directional changes.

ROCKER: Low entry rocker for trimming and enough tail rocker to stay high performance.

FOIL: The high volume foil is perfect for maintaining speed and distance in smaller conditions.  The beveled rail reduces the overall thickness, adding performance including rapid direction changes.

Sessions / 6-1 Bean Bag - First Sessions
« on: August 14, 2017, 04:11:28 PM »
I had a couple of guys ask me to post some video of my 6-1 Bean Bag in action so here are some web cam clips from my first week on the board.  I don't have anyone to video me so I apologize for the poor web cam footage but it gives you an idea of what the board can do.  Keep in mind these are my first sessions so I don't have the board dialed in yet, but I feel like I am getting there.  It is fast and loose.  It's still a little early to make a full assessment on the board but I think it might be the best small wave board I have ever ridden ...

The Shape Shack / Latest Build ... Behold the mighty Bean Bag!
« on: June 30, 2017, 12:30:06 PM »
Behold the mighty Bean Bag!

Features:

- Balanced "double ender" outline, wide point at center.
- Single concave to vee double through the fins and vee off the tail.
- Flat deck with a slopey, pinched "performance" rail.
- "Speed Box" rocker with a little extra flip at the ends.
- Five fin set up for maximum versatility.

My goal for this project is to create a board with characteristics of my Hypto Krypto in a slightly smaller package.  Starting with my Hypto Krypto I rounded off nose and tail to trim the outline shape down to its essential foundation. To make the board "snappier" I moved the wide point back, thinned the nose foil, and added a little kick to the tail rocker.  To increase performance I deepened the single concave a touch and refined the rail profile.

The Shape Shack / New addition on the way ... Lazy Boy SUP
« on: February 02, 2017, 06:49:03 PM »
The Lazy Boy SUP combines the outline and rocker from Lost's Lazy Boy with the bottom contours of the best selling Lost Puddle Jumper.  The result is a low rocker small wave SUP design that can also handle larger waves.

Lazy Boy SUP: 6'6" x 26.77" x 3.96" x 82L
1.5# EPS Marko Foam Blank

Because of the narrow hipped, continuous curve, outline, you can surf this with a centered stance for down the line 70’s inspired speed runs, down carves and cutbacks... or step back on the tail and go vertical off the bottom and in the pocket. The bottom contours consist of a rolled vee in the nose transitioning to subtle single concave through the center to spiral vee under the rear foot.  These contours free the board up, making it easy to push the pinched rail deep and perpendicular into the face of the wave, rather than skate flat on top of the water.

Classifieds / Kaysen Buzz v2 Stub For Sale
« on: November 18, 2016, 06:41:26 PM »
I haven't had this board very long but it's a little too much volume for me and I want to get another board and something has to go :-(

It is a super fun board.  It grovels well and really comes to life in waves with a bit of power.   Don't let the short length discourage you, this board is super stable even in chop.  The board encourages vertical surfing and loves the pocket.  The tapered rails allow you to bury the rails with ease and the short length, pulled in nose and wide point back make snaps off the top a breeze.

This would be a great board for a lighter weight intermediate rider or larger advanced rider who wants to take their stand up surfing to the next level.  Available for pick up in south Orange County, California.

$800 OBO (Zoner discount price, price is higher on CL).

6'6" x 28" x 4.28" x 87L

In like new condition.  This Kaysen Buzz v2 Stub is a custom shape, shaped and glassed locally in San Clemente, CA.  Don't let the small size discourage you, this board is very stable.  I am actually selling it because it is a little too big for me (I am 160lbs).  Features 5 Futures fin boxes, carbon stringer top and bottom, blue/grey resin tint, Creatures XL tail pad, TRACE mount, RSPro Hexatraction deck traction and 3M clear rail protection.  Fins are not included.

Recommended Weight v Ability:
Novice: 115lbs
Intermediate: up to 145lbs
Advanced: up to 175lbs

The Shape Shack / New Addition On The Way ... Hypto Krypto SUP
« on: October 03, 2016, 05:24:23 PM »
TW's "New Quiver Addition" thread got me motivated to give shaping my own board a shot.  I have a couple of different shapes I want to try but this is the one I decided to go with first.  Blank and CNC was ordered today with a quoted 4 day turnaround so I might have the CNC'd blank by the weekend (seems a bit hopeful but you never know).

6'-4" x 27.5" x 4.07" x 81.5L
Marko Foam 1.5# Stringerless blank.

It's a Hypto Krypto homage.  The Hypto has been one of the best selling surfboards in the world for several years now so I thought I'd try and make a SUP version.    Outline is a retro fishy nose pulling in to a rounded pin tail.   It reminds me a lot of my v3 Infinity Phoenix except with a rounded pin instead of square tail.  Bottom contours are fairly subtle starting with rolled vee entry into a very subtle single concave under the front foot which then transitions into a vee / double through the fins and out the tail.    The rocker is flat for speed but I added a little extra flip in the nose.    Deck is flat to keep as much volume as possible for a small form factor but I tapered the rails down to allow burying of the rail (similar to my current boards and the Hypto rails).

Here's a render and specs.  Not sure I'll stick with the render colors for the glassing.  I am hoping to get it glassed in Future Flex technology to stick with the Hypto theme.

The Shape Shack / Custom decals/lams. Print your own or use a service?
« on: September 30, 2016, 12:13:26 PM »
I am designing my first board and would like to make some decals/lams for it.

Are you guys making your own or using a print company?  Advice, suggestions, and recommendations are appreciated.

This board is awesome so I'll be sad to see it go but selling allows me to get something different :-)

Available for pick up in South Orange County, California.   Anaheim/Rancho Santa Margarita/Ladera Ranch.

$950 OBO includes board (Was $2000 new)
$1000 OBO includes board and 7'6" board bag (a little big but a nice bag)

7'0" x 28.5" x 4.125" x 95L

Only 7 months old.  Was $2000 new.   Board weighs a little over 12lbs.  Selling to get something smaller.  Board is in good condition and is water tight.   Has some paddle scrapes on the rails and one very small ding that has been repaired (rear top deck).  Quad Futures boxes.  Fins are not included.

Believe the hype, this board kicks butt!  If you want to take your stand up surfing to the next level this is the board for you.   Super light, gets up to speed quickly and is very maneuverable. Don't let the short length discourage you, this board is super stable even in chop.  I am 160lb and this board has too much volume for me!

When designing the board I had the tail pulled in significantly over a standard Phoenix.  This allows for a lot more maneuverability vs a standard Phoenix but still has the the stability of the wide outline.

Recommended Weight v Ability:
Novice: 130lbs
Intermediate: up to 160lbs
Advanced: up to 190lbs
