Hey Bill....the paddle I left there might be good to bring along for this, for a little kid. Maybe shave down the blade a notch.

Space is my #1 problem. My "workshop" is a 12' x 10' shed. I bring my big tools outside to work when weather permits. Projects of this size are tough because they are so time consuming and leaving 1/2 finished work out in the elements isn't a good idea. Even finished I would have a problem with a 18'+ board... I have problems with storage of the boards I have now.... This may just be a dream until my wife and I move...something we've considered of late. Two things high on my list for moving...walk to the water, a workshop/storage area for my stuff. The house is an afterthought.... A 19 x 27 double carbon...how sweet is that going to be...how do you spell e n v i o u s ? If Bill does his ke nalu distance/downwinder showcase hopefully we'll see some comparisons just like that. You should make the trip over.

I had thought about doing something similar when I 1st saw the gray whale SUP last winter. http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=725.0Haven't gotten it off the drawing board yet though. I'm actually kind of glad because my thoughts have been refined by exposure to a lot of the other boards I've seen. If I do build something it will be at least 16'. The grey whale looks like a decent design for a flatwater/distance board but I wonder how it does in the surf.

Only thing I do with my paddle if I'm going through the wash is to grab it with both hands near the middle and hold it over my head as a shield. That's just for my limited experience with what could at most be called double overhead.
I'd like to hear Blane's thoughts on this for the really big waves.

I think about all I have to be thankful for often. It's really amazing when you stop and think about it. Of all the trillions of people that have been born and died on this planet through it's history, all the untold pain and suffering, the horrors that go on even today. I'm amongst a miniscule percentage of the very, very, very, fortunate. I started thinking about this about 5 years ago when at one point I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. I'd been diagnosed with a brain tumor. It wasn't cancerous or going to kill me but it was sure screwing things up. I was sitting in a waiting room in radiology at the hospital feeling particularly down...lost in my own thoughts, when they wheeled in a 9 year old boy that was undergoing his treatments for cancer. Here was this poor little kid being ravaged by a horrible scary disease and he starts to try and cheer me up. I vowed from that moment on never to feel sorry for myself again. The fact that you are reading this means you have hit the lottery of life...be happy! You have food on the table a roof over your head....you worry about waves or no waves, what board to add to your quiver. I'm sure some of you have problems...I do too. It's just that they can seem possible to overcome in comparison to many. I was just watching CNN's hero awards....one was to a woman that built a school to teach the children of Cambodia that live by picking through the dump for food and things to sell in order to live. Whole families subsisting on the mountains of trash. How can you not feel thankful no matter what circumstances you find yourself in. My father was one of the kindest most caring Dad's in the world (I like my martini's drty with 3 olives Bill.. ), my Mom matches him still today. My brother's and sisters always watched out for me and I'd die or kill for any of them. I love you to bro. My wife of 27 years I love more and more each day and still can't believe how lucky I was to find my soul mate at 17....and she's still a hottie...sweet!!! My daughters are happy, healthy, smart, and make me so proud. I'm so lucky to be their Dad. My friends mean so much, laughter, strength, support, advice, good times...extended family really. How can I not be happy? So much to give thanks for. All that and it's supposed to be head high and glassy tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Just once before I die I'd love to experience the rush of catching and riding a monster like that...of course it would probably be AS I die but what a way to go..... I'm afraid that will never happen though. I don't think I have enough time left to develop the skill necessary. One of the things I'd put on a bucket list for sure. LOL...what I call big you would call ripple Blane... Blane...have you ever considered doing a nose cam vid like cammar does?

Saw an outer shoal/reef going off for the 1st time today at a local break. Never knew it was there before but today was big and you could see it breaking from the beach. Probably 3-4 miles out...looked huge. I'm not good enough for anything like that but i'd love to get out there and see it breaking...maybe with someone good enough and get some vid/pics.
