SUP General / Thar she blows!
« on: August 19, 2008, 07:33:36 PM »
This pic was sent to me by a biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. They had offered a support boat for the Cape Cod Bay Challenge since they were going to be out doing research anyway. It was taken a short distance from our route on the same day. Would have been fun to see. looks like someone rang the dinner bell.

Downwind and Racing / How much is weight a factor for racing
« on: August 16, 2008, 05:51:25 PM »
Not the weight of the board....the weight of the engine.

I'm currently a svelt 245, there is still some fat to be lost but I'm not sure how far I'd need/want to go. I'd be cutting into muscle at 225. I haven't even raced yet but I'm really interested in giving it a shot. I assume if I can maintain or even add strenghth and lose weight I'll get faster.

My plan is to work on the engine until next spring and then look into race boards.

SUP General / Proud to be a Janitor
« on: August 12, 2008, 12:26:22 PM »
Bodhi's wife Lynn did an outstanding job on the video for the Cape Cod Bay Challenge. The next time someone calls you "janitor" your response should be "and damned proud of it" .... ;D

Great job Lynn. Thanks.

Events / Thanks to all the zoner donor's
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:32:36 AM »
Is that a new one for the SUP glossary? zonerdonor?

Anyway....big thanks to all our fellow zoners that donated to the Cape Cod Bay Challenge. We're still receiving donations so we'll wait until early next week to announce the grand total (exceeded my expectations by far).

One thing I've noticed about the SUP community...they tend to be a giving/caring bunch. Whether it's sending a check, or volunteering your time for a cause or to help someone out there is a definite sense of caring. Makes me even happier to be part of it. Keep up the stoke!

Speaking of which...don't forget that Frank is paddling in Sea Paddle NYC next week. A worthy cause for sure.

Events / We made it!
« on: August 09, 2008, 05:15:53 PM »
Just a quick post to let you all know that everyone made it in one piece. Took a little longer than I thought...7.5 hours...but it was also longer than I had calculated...27 miles by the boat GPS. Conditions weren't bad, not as good as forecast but we can't complain.

I'll post more later....time for the hot tub and bed.

SUP General / Anyone using Sailflow?
« on: August 06, 2008, 09:19:37 PM »
Mostly wind speeds but great detail for downwinders. I've had it linked for awhile but only really started looking at it closely since planning the challenge. I hope its forecasts are good, showing almost perfect right now.

Downwind and Racing / Fastest of the fast?
« on: August 04, 2008, 08:15:17 PM »
Rand's thread of fastest for downwind generated some great discussion and stoke for the downwind side of the sport but I don't think we ever got any kind of an answer.

What are the fastest boards out there? Take all the race boards we've seen. Put them on glass with the same paddler applying the same stroke, what board is going to go fastest? Do we know?

What are the fastest non race boards? A lot of us (including me) are likely to race in that kind of class at least until we can save the change for something sleek and shiny.

SUP General / Call me selfish....a prayer for no surf....
« on: August 04, 2008, 01:18:42 PM »
OK...just for a 1/2 day....and only in Cape Cod Bay... ;D

Keep your fingers crossed for us (any other body parts you care to cross will work too) for a nice 10-15 knot WSW wind and following seas for the Cape Cod Bay Challenge this saturday morning. The forecast has been switching back and forth more than Blane Chambers on a wave face. I'm not going to look again until Thursday (yeah sure)

Gear Talk / Wetsuit repairs
« on: July 19, 2008, 07:17:05 AM »
As much as I hate to think about wetsuits on this hot summers day!

I put my wetsuit to a lot of good use last winter and it could use some repairs. Any tips on fixes or should I send it out. Most of the repairs needed are along seams that have pulled. Its a Ripcurl 4/3 classic stitched and sealed.

Sessions / P-town in pics...DJ style
« on: July 18, 2008, 08:46:31 PM »
ECsup and I took a trip to Provincetown to meet with the harbormaster to plan logistics at that end for the Cape Cod Bay Challenge. We had a very productive day and had a lot of fun doing it.

Here it is DJ style.

The Mike mobile ready to roll...

A great shot of the Cape Cod Canal as we drove over....proving that timing is everything.

First stop...Hyannis and WCOD to tape a radio show about the event....our second one. We're getting good at this.

I'm definitely not as good as DJ...a big gap in the picture taking. The Pilgrim monument in P-town.

The Norwegian Cruise Lines Dawn was in port. Despite how busy that made an already very busy harbor, Rex, the harbormaster was very helpful and generous with his time.

Lets go fishing....on second thought...maybe not.

Not sure who these lovely old ladies are but they must be well liked.

This is the beach where we'll be landing. Hope the weather is like this on August 9th. Nice SW wind and calm seas.

And appropriately enough...it's right behind the Surf Club restaurant where Mike and I had a great lunch. Very friendly staff...we also made arrangements to have lunch there on the 9th (at least tentatively).

P-town is full of bizarre wierd and wonderful shops and galleries. This isn't at all out of the ordinary.

Some small side streets paved with crushed shells.

This ones for PonoBill.

Backside view of the beach where we'll be landing behind the Surf Club. The Cape Cod Reuben is awesome!

Note the woman siting with her feet in the water with the umbrella. It was hot today but that was still slightly weird...she was there when we sat down...still there when we left.

We found a date for DJ... ;D

The view down Commercial Street.

No visit to P-town is complete without browsing through Marine Specialties.

Sure ....why not?

Our trip through town was primarily to ask shops to hang posters. Folks were very helpful. We left a dozen or so hanging around town.

Time to hit the water....hope the surf is up.

Oooooh....jackpot. Cahoon Hollow...home of the famous Beachcomber Restaurant and party place.

Never did get any good surf picks even though Mike was tearing it up. Had one really great opportunity while I was paddling out and Mike caught a beauty. Coming straight down the line at me with a big tube just behind. Oh well...just too focused on catching some myself.

Mike getting position for the next set.

Only 10 surfers and a surfski out sharing the water with a couple of seals. A bunch of bluefish in the water coming right into the waves with us. Very cool to watch them swim at speed within the wave.

A great day .

Events / Any east coast races?
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:13:06 AM »
I'm getting very envious of our Hawaiian and West Coast brothers and sisters. Any races on the north east coast?

Closest I've found is Virginia Beach.
