Fish Tales, Stand Up style / I need to remember to bring my rod
« on: September 17, 2018, 10:28:12 PM »
I saw a guy land a big one yesterday and this kid was hooking some baby bonitos off the beach today. I paddled right over a baitball they were tearing into.

Sessions / Almost a triple...@#$%ing fog
« on: September 11, 2018, 04:32:19 PM »
Stayed local today....was lazy about it and wish I hadn't been. Should have caught the early low tide.

#1  I drove to the beach around 9:00 expecting a choppy workout and was surprised to find glass with no wind and a small swell. Tide was getting high so nothing but smashing on the wall in the cove so I drove out to the point. Crossover access to the outer beach closes after Aug 1st so I could only get about 2 miles out. Nobody for miles.....I can see it breaking another 1/4 mile down the beach...small waves, mostly knee high with occasional thigh. Then just as I paddled into it where it was breaking I was pleasantly surprised by a chest high set that came in. Every 10 mins 3 waist to chest. Absolutely beautiful morning, water was warm no sun but it was hot and humid. I stayed hair dry for the 1st half hour then started jumping in frequently...meltdown from all the paddling. Surfed and played for 2 hours and was gassed..... >:(.

Took a lunch break then went back down to get another paddle in. Waves had bumped slightly and it was mid tide so I stayed in the cove. Thigh to waist high shore break, one turn and out, lot of fall flat bails but I still managed a nice gravel burn on my back on a bigger wave I tried to milk too long. Only lasted an hour or so in that but I was paddling at the ragged edge of the shore break a workout I do often and it requires constant attention to balance and position to keep from getting caught. The tide was dropping and it looked like the waves were still building when I left. I thought I was good for one more short session if the waves stayed and started breaking over the outer shoal.

#3 Fucking fog.....I'm toast in the fog....balance goes out the window. I had gone home and was mowing the lawn when i noticed the fog was rolling in.... >:(. Drove down anyway....waves were small again...walked to the waters edge and couldn't see outside...just a seal staring at me. Was kind of funny...he rose way up out of the water and stared me down. I think he was balancing on his rear flippers, then he barked and did a little back flip into the water..... :). My head was already feeling funky just standing on the shore looking out into it so I decided paddling out a 3rd time in dense fog was pushing my luck and settled for the duece.

Retiring....though not in a way I'd prefer. My head has finally gotten the better of me. I've started the process of filing for disability. The last year has been tough and the last 6 months in particular. Vertigo has gotten worse, issues driving sometimes, lack of sleep nightmares of falling (vertigo makes EVERYTHING difficult)...memory issues, the list goes on.... :(

I've had problems with work for a while. Difficulty coordinating and scheduling. I used to manage 5 big projects at once...now I struggle with 1. They've been great, very understanding, adjusting my workload and schedule, type of work.....still wasn't enough unfortunately. Lots of doctors visits lately and my GP told me he thought it was time to call it quits a month back. I've had some freaky memory issues and other weird shit that might be medication related that have brought it all to a head. I spoke to my boss and HR a couple weeks ago and they agreed that it was time.

So it kinda sucks to go out this way but I've started to look at the good side of it. I have spent more time on the water the last couple of weeks. The financial hit is going to suck but it is what it is and at least we'll be OK. I'll focus on working on the house and doing some of my hobbies at a higher level. I plan on doing some additional charity work both for the CCBC and community stuff and the honey-do list will always be long (Suzanne is also celebrating me doing all the laundry, house cleaning, and cooking) so I should keep myself busy.

Retirement sounds good but I didn't want to do it this way. Looking forward to spending more time on the water though.....I'm needing the therapy both physical and mental I get from it.

Almost had to move....a little water under the wheels. Groms ate lunch on buckets, no surf today unfortunately but we paddled out to the bank and snorkeled and made sand castles.

I've always enjoyed coming to Plymouth. We moved to the town because we enjoy it so much, the beach access, great restaurants, always things happening, the beach access....:). We'll grab a bite somewhere and take a walk, it's a pretty town with lots to look at...I could take a 100 pics and still not do it justice...history at every turn obviously and there has been a lot of work done in recent years to make it even nicer. Nice to call it home.

I love all the choices for great restaurants we have here in Plymouth....one of my favorites though is the Shanty Rose Pub...on the dock, where the fisherman eat...and drink. Nothing fancy...good and plentiful plates of seafood fried and otherwise...mostly fried. And cold drinks.

Random / Ancestry DNA

My kids got it for me for father's day. Very interesting....I also started adding to what I know of our geneology with the help of some of the links to others in the DNA...3rd and 4th cousins that already have done some research and fleshed out the family tree with the documents available. The combo of Ancestry's genealogical databases and the DNA is crazy.

I've been reading a lot of Bernard Cornwell and just recently James Nelson's books on the Viking conquests. James Nelsons books in particular go into some depth on the construction and sailing of the longships. So I was pleased to hear that this is happening over the next few days here in Plymouth. I'm about to go paddle out to watch her come in.

SUP General / Hope Creek made it home
« on: May 29, 2018, 10:17:31 AM »
I felt terrible yesterday. Creek called and told me his ride fell through and he was stuck at the airport in Boston with his board. Unfortunately I was on my way to the hospital to pick up my granddaughter while her Mom dealt with her stepbrother who had just crashed in a Motocross race. Hope you got the board onto that Prius my friend.... :)

OH...and because you asked....a broken collarbone and tire tracks across his back..... ::)

Random / No Gym Necessary
« on: May 06, 2018, 07:50:57 PM »
I didn't get out on the water today but at least I got some exercise. Getting old sucks though....would have picked that big one up in the past. Could hardly roll it downhill this morning..... ::). This is going to be a moss/shade garden. I worked from 7 this morning to 5 this afternoon. This was taken early morning. I added a bunch more rock, a big chunk of driftwood, and transplanted a bunch of perennials and a small tree from my other house. Looks pretty good IMNSHO. I finished working and the rain started...perfect timing though I did get pretty wet finishing up. I'll get a pic in the morning.

I had some bobcat work done to add some parking and a narrow drive. Just going to be gravel with a cobble apron where it ties into my paved drived. I'm building some cobble and gravel steps up to where the wheelbarrow is. It leads to the top of a 5' wall which is penetrated with some very cool looking ancient moss covered steps down to a small lawn. I'm going to add an "ancient stairs...use at own risk" to the path up to them.... :o. I'm also going to use some of the trees I lost as a wall at the street end. It drops quickly there and I plan to bury them standing up and sweep into the drive...backfill with gravel and some soil....I'm going to light a couple/few of them by cutting in slots where I can drop in a solar lantern. Still lots to do but other than SUP or woodworking this is what I enjoy doing. Fucking sore tonight I'll tell you though...my hands feel like claws.

Sessions / What Creek is missing
« on: April 19, 2018, 08:30:56 AM »
Me too for that matter and I'm not getting ready to head to the other side of the world.

Weed was shooting some pictures Tuesday on the Cape and posted a ton (1200 or so) on his FB page.....not SUP but too good not to share and I thought Creek would appreciate it.... :)

Random / Opportunity
« on: April 08, 2018, 06:03:45 PM »
A dozen or so arborvitae that have stood in our new back yard for 50+ years decided this years string of nor'easters was just too much. I have a serious mess to clean up....I'm about a 1/4 of the way through it. But I see so much opportunity in the mess. I'm getting planks cut for a board build...amazingly light wood. I have an outdoor screenhouse to build. 1st one I built at our old house about 7 years ago...still in solid shape. Lots of fenceposts in there. The arborvitae also carves like butter. We're renovating our guest bathroom and I'm building the vanity and am carving a sink from a chunk...circled in red....and I'm planning on carving another Tiki for the CCBC this year.

It's also my Gym....I've always seen yard work as an opportunity for a workout. I'm piling all the logs and significant sized pieces for  use. This yard has been neglected for years....so no gym membership needed.
