Part of the issue in these kinds of discussions on this forum is that the Trump supporters seem surprisingly unwilling to share the source of their beliefs. Statements are made as simple fact. when there is often a rather complex backstory that might include disconfirming evidence. So I would appeal to the Trump supporters here to please follow convention, and cite the sources of the facts that you assert. Just simple weblinks like I have done here would be great. Because I think we are reading and hearing very different information, and I want to read and hear what you are. This would be in your best interests because maybe I might encounter something that might change my viewpoint. Thanks.

I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that the human race is totally doomed. Or maybe it’s just democracy that is doomed, killed by social media, misinformation, and the worst instincts of human nature.

It is stunning how putting information at everyone's fingertips actually just made spreading misinformation so much easier. Despite individual human's intelligence, as a pack humans still act just like sheep.

Nice skirt dOOd!

Looks like a fun board too by the way.

Thanks for the formula, A10. I'll keep that in mind if ever I plan to do a marathon. I'll run an average of 2400 miles a day. Every day. Nice.

A10 and Photofr, you illustrated well what I was trying to say.

Cool. He's the first [good] guy I saw kiting.

Like Robbie says, hand-held wings have been around for decades but the time is right now. Why? Because foil has little resistance. So it probably works pretty well.

Just a simple inflatable one hand holds. The simplicity is intriguing.

Must try.

The problem though is that being a good waterman isn't the same as being a good athlete. For example, if the conditions are hot, relying on water alone for fluid intake (as one account mentions) is like something out of the dark ages for conditions this severe. It just needs time for the laidback nature of SUP to catch up with other sports so that paddlers look after themselves holistically - not just in terms of technical skill.

That's only according to "your" science.

There are many different theories on nutrition, and many examples of natives exploding this theories.

OK, when I say natives you think of Tarahumara indians, Pokot, Kalahari bushmen, etc. There's a local (good old continental european white) guy here I know who still holds the record for the ascent&descent of Everest. He does, well did, >8000m summits in a day going fast and light with only a snickers bar and 1/2 a liter of water.

Save your breath. He'll be the first to admit it isn't what your science advises. He's 70 now and I don't think you're going change him.

There are a ton of outliers. Point being nutrition is personal and it's mostly about reservoirs of strength and digging deep into potential. As the village kids here have shown over and over (a few world champions in ultra endurance sports here, and I guarantee you they eat more cheese on a weekly basis than you could ever imagine). They'll be the first to tell you it's all in the training.

I think Titou played it smart resting at home in slightly cooler conditions and arriving the night before the race. He has a degree in sports coaching BTW.

As to your second point, you're basically comparing a race of 1-1.5 hours to 2-3 hours. Its different in terms of its demands (the shorter one will be roughly about 5% higher in terms of exercise intensity). As you say, that would put off amateurs and for paddlers it requires a bit more volume to get the best out of it. I personally hate races of that length in any sport but if I were doing them, I'd need sessions of 3-4 hours in length behind me. Sod that.

... and there I was subscribing to the theory you only need to train half as much as race day.

[prefer mine just BTW]

Still looking forward for Paddle League to announce the "2019 Paddle League schedule in early December". <cough, cough>

OK, it's winter (up here) and maybe nice warm summer (down there) and we all know rest is good for us...

I'm having fun. Hope boss man is too.

The swimmer yamamoto neoprene 1mm suits are used by waterskiers even in winter. OK, they do a very short session but the complete wind resistance means they're as good as a 5mm suit (for them). Plus they are cheap.

Maybe a sized up swimmer suit over an inbetween-season wetsuit would work. For skiing I have several thin and light layers I add or remove to my backpack. My outermost layer is a simple light [strechy] windbreaker. It paper thin but adds substantial warmth when on.

My 3/2 longlegs/shortsleeve wetsuit with my impact vest and a yamamoto rubber swimmers suit over it might be da dope. Especially as a wind resistance layer. Fo cheap too. I should try.

Apparently they are crazy easy to put on. Fragile however.

Anyone know how to repair cuts to a smoothskin wetsuit? There some kind of tape that works?

I haven't tried the impact vest underneath. Does one need to size up a suit to do that?

Maybe if I stopped beer...

It would be interesting to see how a lighter board manages in bigger chop.
Lighter is not always better for stability or seaworthiness. i.e. a lighter downwind board is not always better than a slightly heavier one.
For the lake and river that you are racing in, it might be totally irrelevant and lighter is simply better.

Light weight is critical whenever you're doing sports with lots of vertical altitude gain.

 ;)

Paddling gets me high as a kite. Does that count?

Bottom line is a light board is way easier to get on the roof and upper racks.

It looks a bit like they really were not aware of the danger there.
...

As is most often the case.

With a leash should come the precautions. And should be part of day one instructions.
