Welcome to the nanny state, courtesy of the “progressive” movement.

Don’t know if the plastic composition has improved significantly in fin boxes, but going back all the way to the late 60’s it was a standard warning not to use white fin boxes, as whatever materials were added or deleted to get the white color weakened the overall strength. Supposedly the black color allowed a stronger material.

Maybe fiction but I have to say over the course of 1/2 century of surfing & 30 years of windsurfing my personal observation supports the white boxes having a higher failure rate. Even more so in windsurfing where aerials pushed up the punishment level an order of magnitude. So you may want to rethink your situation with the black boxes. This perceived mistake may have worked in your favor.

Living in Florida I get the heat concern, but while I have seen improperly preped boxes delaminates, a properly installed box set in high density closed cell PVC foam like your new board should not suffer any such issue, regardless of color. I always use black boxes when building my boards and never had a problem.

The Shape Shack / Hollow layup schedule anyone?
« on: December 06, 2017, 12:14:54 PM »
Pondering using John Lindhal’s A class catamaran one-off technique to build a viable hollow board . 14’ or longer all-water race/semi-race board. Anyone have a legit layup schedule for a high end surf ski? Should be a decent foundation to start from with tweaking from there. The cats use 3/8” 5lb corecell with 5.8 oz carbon skins inside (bias) and out (0-90). A good place to start as well.

I already made a jig for a 4.3 m cat hull and have both halves of one hull glassed on the inside with 5.0 oz Kevlar. The concept is solid. John has made at least 5 different LR  A cat designs this way with good results at the national level.

For those unframiliar with “ A” class catamarans they are 18’ long x 7.5’ wide and have an all up weight of 150lbs...that’s everything but the sailor.  Hulls, crossbeams, rudders, daggers boards/foils, mast sails and all blocks and rigging. Super light considering everything that is going on and capable of surviving pitchpoles at 20 + mph usually without damage to the hulls.

Not sure if the weight would be that much better than foam for an SUP but it would be interesting to try.

If you would like to see more on the concept copy & pasted the link below.

The Shape Shack / Extreme V in unlimited tail, anyone see or try it?
« on: October 10, 2017, 08:38:55 AM »
The flavor of the last few years have been some pretty radical concaves. Going in the other direction has anyone seen a blocked off tail but with an ever increasing v in the tail to give a squared off tail the water release attributes of of a pintail slightly above the waterline. But still have width in the tail that engages as the board rolls slightly...

The wine glass transoms of lower speed sailboats and row boats made me think about it. Give a very slight increase in secondary stability yet a clean release.

Someone must have tried it somewhere along the line..just curious...

The Shape Shack / Re: Rocker change to existing board.

TallDue & PonoBill, the senarios you discribed are some of the first things that danced through my mind. Quickly dismissed them as too much work, rather start with a fresh blank than peel a deck pad, compromise longitudinal strength and add weight. TallDude...even if I peeled the whole bottom the rails would have to go too for it to flex. Then the deck would prestressed in compression...just don’t see any these approaches ending well... ::)

After further contemplation I’m going to leave well enough alone. But you know what they say, the only dumb question is the one never asked....

It will result in one of two things

A -  do nothing
B - distroy your board

Do not waste anymore time even considering this it will not work.

Ok...now I’ve definetly got to give it a go  ;)...a 28 lb concrete block on each end gently supported in the center is definitely not going to break it...if it does nothing while being stored no harm no foul. Right?

The Shape Shack / Rocker change to existing board.
« on: October 02, 2017, 11:32:15 AM »
Has anyone out there tried and had any success in inducing more rocker in an existing board? To add insult to injury the board I want to do this with it all carbon.
My head tells me it’s never going to happen as generally carbon has a modulus of elasticity of abot 1.5 so the epoxy resin (at 4.0) would cooperate but not the fiber. Anyone actually try this? If you did get any minuscule amount did it stay? Or revert back to its original curve.

Just curious if supporting the nose and tail and adding considerable weight in the center (or visa versa) letting set for a long period of time would have any effect... looking for maybe an inch increase overall...16’ x25-1/2” board

SUP Advocacy / Re: Wipe Your Own A$$

**rant start** For those not familiar with the term, it means take responsibility for your actions and decisions, and if you make a mess, clean it up! I bet there are lots of rants about this, but I'm new to all the rules and regs that are being thrown around, and I'm shocked at what I'm discovering - people don't have to wipe their own asses anymore.

"But what happens when people get together for a race and don't understand the risks involved and someone DIES?" See the title - if I don't know what I'm doing and don't contemplate the risks involved, I deserve whatever happens.

"But what if it's your KID?" See the title - My kids have got to learn how to take responsibility for their own actions and decisions, too, and no agency relieves me of that most basic responsibility to teach that to my children.

"But what if your wife/husband is frantic because you're missing at the end of the day?" See the title - Even if I do stuff "right", it's a dangerous sport at times, and I choose to do it. No, I don't want the Coast Guard to be out there looking for me, I'd rather die alone in the cold dark water than loose the freedom I fought for. If you don't agree with that DON'T DO IT.

We Americans aren't allowed to do things without protecting ourselves in accordance with the federal government, the state government, the city police, the state police, the FBI, the Coast Guard, medical and insurance companies, etc. etc. - and when things go wrong, we still aren't protected from being hurt or dying, nor from someone who decided we didn't do "enough" to keep everyone else safe. Wipe your own ass!

If I want to join paddlers in a set distance paddle, someone has to organize it, and thereby take responsibility for my safety. So now low key (read: no big sponsors) events can't afford the liability, because we are no longer allowed to assemble peacefully and do a physical event together without someone being forced to take responsibility for everyone else's decisions, actions, and personal safety? Wipe you own ass!

If I go to the water with extra gear and lend someone gear to paddle with FOR FREE, I'm liable if they hurt themselves even if I make them sign something. So even if I want to help anyone and everyone find joy on the water (and that's what I love doing) they can sue me for everything I have and more if they get hurt, or die, or if they just feel like it? Wipe your own ass!

If I want to paddle without a leash or PFD, I can be fined, or worse. What if I don't like the way the officer is talking to me, and tell him to fuck off the way I would tell anyone else getting in my business? Yeah, I'll be arrested, detained, fined, and whatever else they want to do, instead of him being allowed to say "Whatever dude - wipe your own ass!"

I'm sure folks who are heavy into events, or politics, or law, or corporate business have a lot of complicated explanations why this is so, but if it can't be explained in simple terms & words, it's a bunch of BS. Wipe your own ass.

We are all responsible for our own decisions and actions, and no government or agency can take that away unless we let them. We are giving up freedom for what we are being told is safety, and it's just plain wrong no matter how you slice it. **rant complete**

Agree with you 1,000 percent.

Sorry windwarrior...just saw your request...Reel legion Long sleeve tee shirts can be found here...not the most user friendly web site....hope admin doesn't mind...if it cross a line he will delete. Best to just go to your local Bells store if they have them where you live.

One thing to design a board and put in a catalog with all the choices SUP forum junky,s say they want...it's an entirely different matter to have enough of these boards produced where people can actually buy exactly the model/length/width and now for the women, color, they want. Let alone demo one.

It appears from the chatter every year that it's been very difficult to get race boards when they had fewer offerings...has something radically changed in their supply chain management? Will this turn into a custom order only type affair?

I still find it interesting from an historical perspective that a splinter of the Surf Culture has so embraced the "pop out" that their father/grandfathers generation wouldn't be caught dead on. Granted the construction materials & methods are light years apart, but still the mystique of the custom built board doesn't seem to have the traction in SUP like it has with surfing....at least in the past. My take is CAD & CNC changed the Surf landscape forever and there is no turning back. But...a lot of the custom boys have this tech too. Even one backyard builder we know of 😏

In conclusion, its great they have winning designs...bought some of the best talent to race and promote their boards...have a model and size for 98% of the paddlers out there...but if it's not readily available, and priced too high for people to afford, it's just another carrot on a stick marketing campaign. Here's to hoping they can deliver on all these cool offering.

Interesting...when looking at the two boards it appears if you drew the same two red triangles on the bottom of the board on the left...and then sanded the area flat within the triangles (from red line to red line) you would get the identical bottom of the board on the right...not close...but dead on identical. Which effectively gives it more tail rocker.

I have been looking for all the same attributes (long sleeve T shirts, moisture wicking, spf 50) in neon Red...have you seen any in that color?

I usually wear a bright lime green or bright orange Longsleeve Teeshirt from "Reel Legend" sold at Bells on sale often for $20...they are SPF 30 I think...hold up really well...and not a lot of logo where you feel like a walking billboard for the brand....but still looking for neon red, which is a color they don't sell.

Anyone know of a source?

Before we "shoot, hang, and drown the shaper...not necessarily in that order....

How big is the board? Is it a wave board? Race Board? Touring board? Did you choose a desired weight and let the shapper take it from there? Or did you tell him how you wanted it glassed? Did you allude to being rough on boards or having problems with durability in the past? Are you you average size guy or bigger than the average bear?

What's the back story?

One of, if not the main reason to do sandwich construction in the move the skins apart to increase stiffness. In FRP you can achieve sufficient strength with a single (non sandwich laminate) far before you achieve needed stiffness.

Wood as a sandwich layer is inferior, but cheaper core than PVC foam. All other things being equal when you move the inner and outer laminate apart it increase stiffness. Roughly 1 to 4 or 1/4" core is going to be 4 times as stiff as a 1/8" core. I have not ridden a Jimmy Lewis board but I am very familiar with that type of construction, I would expect with his laminate/core layup his boards are plunty stuff without the use of carbon. As stiff or stiffer than a single laminate carbon or thin wood carbon combination.

The industry has invented a whole host of marketing reasons to get the public to buy a lesser product for a premium price. "The natural look of wood", some imaginary magic flex pattern, sustainability, more "organic", increased strength over single laminate" and the list goes on...but at the end of the day a well designed and constructed PVC core is going to give you the ability to make a stronger board, a lighter board, a stiffer board, have a longer useful life, and be less suseptable to damage than any other system now available for a hard performance board. As long as you know your making a compromise, no worries, but to say wood is better with cost not a factor....that's just fantasy.

'Blue and green should never be seen'.

The colour ways design looks bloody awful and something out of the 1980's. They should fire their graphic designer !

Blue & green are my favorite colors...especially when used together.

Apparently I'm in good company...God loves blue (sky) and green (oceans), when you get around to creating a planet you can pick your favorites...can't wait to see you show Him how it's done 🙄 😜😏
