Random / Re: What would your DREAM surf vehicle look like
« on: December 24, 2017, 07:48:35 AM »
I have been considering a Ford Transit with Quigley 4x4.  Cheaper than the Sprinter and easier to get serviced.  Still like my Sprinter so no hurry yet.

I looked at those too.  Unfortunately their transfer case does not have a true nuetral, so if you ever want to flat tow behind another vehicle you are out of luck.

I have zero experience in rapids but for flatwater touring and taking passengers I think you'll find that most entry level touring inflatables are similar.  Seem to be made in the same factory too.

Baggage handlers managed to poke a hole in one ours and the patch kit that comes with them worked fine.  One of them is an Isle and I don't remember the other one, but they are damn near identical.

I wish Ke Nalu would make a Konihi smaller than the 84.

Or a more high aspect version like Starboard.

Take your patch kit.  When you arrive, unpack and inflate.... check for leaks.  On one of our trips the airline managed to poke a hole in one of the boards.  This way you find it early and can patch it.   The glue takes awhile to cure and you don't want to find out the morning you were expecting to go paddling.

I'm going to make the argument FOR the FAT tires, considering the thread is for fatbikes.

I've found 4 psi works great for the soft stuff ..... floats right over everything, and that's just using my legs!

Hey all,

I've got this third-hand Starboard Sprint 14x24 that's had a lot of use and the surface of the bottom is not very smooth; you can feel long patches of roughness.  And you can see the texture of the carbon-fiber through a lot of it.

Will

If it's a grey 2013 I have the exact same board and it is not rough at all.

Mine is for sale if you want a quick fix. Board will look the same and you will be instantly faster.

I am leaning back towards the Bafang.  The primary reason is the enclosed gearing.  I didn't like the look of the exposed 2nd chain the cyclone kits.

My primary interest in this bike would be to replace my current Surf-Mobile.  This would involve some beach riding in hard to soft pack.  I am getting comfortable that the 1,000 Watt BBSHD Bafang should deliver the goods in a more hermetically sealed package.

If reliability in a beach environment is a concern Mongoose has a simpler version called the Beast.  No cables, no derailers, etc.  We have two of them that we have ridden on the beach several times a week for the past two years with virtually no reliability issues.

I took the frame out of the box and put in sealed bearings, lower gearing (for soft sand), rust resistant chain, lightened the wheels, and lighter tires.  Run 15 psi for the street and hard pack or 4 psi for messing around in the dunes.

If you have an electric motor what do you need gears for anyway?

Brakes might be an issue though.

I'd suggest that you call either West Coast Paddle Sports at 858 272-3278 or OEX at 619 224-4241 for rental SPs. They can advise you on the best places to go either in Mission Bay, La Jolla, or San Diego bay.

Do this

Look forward to seeing what you build, I had problems with uploading pics too, was saying wrong file type and too large from the camera roll but found if I uploaded from the photo stream it was ok.

I had the same problem.  Ended up having to convert them to .jpg files on a computer to get them to post.  Still can't do it from an iPad or iPhone.

Fish Tales, Stand Up style / Re: San Diego reservoirs and SUP
« on: July 08, 2016, 08:05:12 PM »
Those are all bs excuses.  Plenty of other states have lakes specifically created to be reservoirs for drinking water and they have no such restrictions.

Someone just doesn't want SUPs on their lake.

You do have a point there.  The primary system seems to weed out the candidates who might have more appeal in a general election.  Having all primaries open might help that.

I'm unaffiliated, so can't vote in primaries, so am at the mercy of voters in the parties to come up with someone I can stand.  But Independents are becoming a huge percentage of all voters now, so that means more and more people are going to be left out of the primary voting, and the ones leaving the parties are the more moderate voters.  So that means the people left in the parties who can vote in the primaries are going to be at the extremes, meaning this could all spiral downhill.  More extreme candidates, leading more people to drop out of the parties, meaning even more extreme candidates next time, meaning more people leave the parties...

Or perhaps ditch the primaries altogether and go to multistage elections.  First round is wide open, candidates who get more than 20% move on to next round, candidate who receives more than 50% wins.
