Saw the movie in Tahoe City last month.  Highly recommended!
The Boyum brothers was a surprise. Funny how they "crossed paths".

Classifieds / Wanted- Unlimited 18' +/- Race SUP
« on: September 23, 2022, 08:55:50 AM »
Got involved in a Triathalon with the 3rd leg being a kayak paddle.  They let SUP's race but I am not as fast on my 14' BARK as the EPIC V10's.
So I thought I would see if anyone has an 18' unlimited board lying around that doesn't get any use anymore.
Let me know what you have.
Thanks

General Discussion / Re: Tesla designs. Not really SUP friendly
« on: February 16, 2021, 11:09:59 AM »
Model Y or Cybertruck is the ticket for boardsports.  We bought our Model 3 in May 2018.  VIN # is in the 17,000's, so it was pretty early.  We got a good one with no manufacturing issues. It is the most fun car I have ever owned.  They didn't make the dual motor at that time, and prices have actually come down some.  Today, I could buy a dual motor with the same upgrades for the same price I paid in 2018 for the rear motor model 3.  Now though I would definitely get the Model Y, long range battery with dual motor.
I still deal with the problem of my wife not allowing me to use it to go surfing.  It still looks brand new.
We recently (2 weeks ago) bought a 2021 Ford Explorer, with all the bells and whistles that we have become accustomed to in the Tesla Model 3.
We now realize we should have waited for the Cybertruck to start production.  The Explorer has a lot of things that the M3 has, but the user interface is so cumbersome in the new Ford that it hinders wanting to use some of it. I am sure we will learn how to use it. But it is really amazing when you compare Telsa's user interface for adaptive cruise control, staying in the lane, lane changing, music choices and other features to what Ford is doing.  Tesla is way ahead of the game.
The only thing I would like in my M3 is active collision avoidance, when I haven't engaged cruise or self drive.

So the ticket is get a "non-premium" model Y, with roof racks, then you won't feel so bad about getting sand in the carpet. Or wait for the Cybertruck.

SUP General / Re: for all you thinking about a super short board....
« on: November 21, 2019, 05:32:14 PM »
I agree with the newby and Creek!
Ride what you like, when you like and how you like.
I love my little short board sup and I also have fun on my bigger short board.
And on those days when its not big, I have fun on whatever 10'+ log I can jump on.
I don't really care if its a real wave at the coast or I am surfing my new custom Varial wakesurfer behind the boat.
Every board I have surfs different.  So just jump on a board and surf whatever style the board wills you.
And like Creek said, I love snapping that shortboard around on a steep wave while I still can.

Random / Re: How long is your ride to the water?
« on: November 13, 2019, 03:34:11 PM »
Flatwater-
30 seconds to walk out my back door to the dock and paddle out

Wakesurf/foil-
Same as flatwater, except we have to uncover the boat and idle out to fast water

Surf-
2 hours to Santa Cruz (Lots of good friends to visit)
5.5 hours to Ventura (Son and grandkids live here)
9 hours to North County San Diego  (Love camping at San Elijo and hanging with Cardiff Sweeper)

I would give anything to live closer to real waves, but we have a pretty good gig here in Discovery Bay, for the past 23 years.

Random / Re: Electric Surf Vehicles in 2020

So its been one year since I got the model 3.  $57k at that time, and we thought we would only drive it locally and maybe put 10k miles on it.  Well 22k miles later, after one year, and no loss in battery capacity.  You will never have more fun driving a car than this.  (well maybe with a p100d)  A good friend was about to spend $62k on a new 5 series BMW.  It was a beautiful car.  We spent less than an hour driving around in my model 3 and he put in an order for a dual motor performance version, that cost him $78k.  Looking forward to getting in that when it comes.
I save at least $6,000 a year in gas now, and have way more fun driving.  When the Rivian comes out, we are selling our 2016 Chevy Silverado and going 100% electric.  Also just ordered the Tesla solar panels for our roof.  $16,000 after tax credit and break even is 5.5 years out.  Am I crazy? Maybe, but even if the economics of electric vehicles doesn't  work out.  They are just way more fun to drive.
If you haven't driven one, you are missing out.
I have taken it several times to the Sacramento Drag strip.  With a 95% charge I can run 13.2's all day and dominate the bracket class.  I have a 71 Mustang that runs mid 8 second quarter mile times, but goes on a trailer.  Its fun, but it basically cost the same as the model 3, and the model 3 has a lot more round wins than the Mustang.
The future of Muscle Cars is silent but deadly.  Look at the Rivian Truck, 756 HorsePower.  Depending on the weight, that should propel that truck to 11 second 1/4 mile times. And it can tow 11,000 lbs.

SUP General / Re: Surfboard Leash String - what to use?
« on: May 18, 2019, 04:56:39 PM »
A10 is right. There is no rope stronger than this stuff. It lasts forever and won't chafe. I really don't think it needs the polyester outer sleeve as A10 suggests. It will still outlast your board.

https://www.westmarine.com/buy/samson-rope--amsteel-dyneema-as-78-single-braid-sold-by-the-foot--P014895700?recordNum=3

.

Thank you!   What size/thickness(?) is more appropriate? 1/8 ?  3/16?

Buy 1/8"

The 12' of 3/16'" I ordered came today and I replaced most of my boards leash strings.  It is too thick and very difficult to loop through some types of leash plugs, and difficult to to tie.

Don't know if this link will post.  But it's me and my buddy in 1975 skating a drainage ditch by our house.

Foil SUP / Re: Foil SUP Cowells Carnage
« on: March 30, 2019, 08:05:47 AM »
Classic Cowells!
You will always catch a wave with 10 or more of your "best friends".
You will then have to go through the slalom course of people in the water, who virtually do everything they can to get in your way, without knowing it.
I really don't think I would ever take a foil out there.  But it doesn't matter if you are on a longboard, shortboard (yes some do paddle out on shortboards), SUP, Kayak, prone paddleboard, or foil, at some point you will likely hit someone or get hit by someone.
So if you paddle out at Cowells, expect the worst, and don't complain when it happens, because it will.
There are many other surf spots in town, with a lot fewer people.
That doesn't mean that they aren't crowded though. Just fewer people.

Random / Re: Great Year For Concerts
« on: March 20, 2019, 06:41:28 PM »
Two weeks ago, my wife and I went to Jackson Rancheria Casino on Northern California, to see Journey Live.  Not the Journey that has been seen and heard over the past 30 years, but almost the original Journey. Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie, the original founding members of Journey, got together last year and did a single concert with 3 other very talented musicians.  That concert was named Journey through Time and was so well received they decided to tour in 2019.  We went to the first show.  The difference between the "pop" music of the Steve Perry fronted Journey, along with all the singers who followed Steve Perry, was that this concert would include many of the songs from the first 3 Journey Albums.  If you have never heard them, check out the first album "Journey", and the 2nd "Look into the Future, and the last album before Steve Perry, "Next".
The concert included all of the hits from the Pop version of Journey and they played 7 songs from the first 3 albums.  The last time I heard those songs live was at Winterland around 1975.  It was surreal to be sitting there watching Neal and Gregg, playing songs they haven't played in 40 years.  Neal is as sharp as ever on guitar and Gregg sounded great.  The drummer was amazing.  He actually was a Steve Perry sound alike and fronted Journey when Steve Perry quit years ago.  He played the drums and sang all the Steve Perry hits, you would expect to hear at any other Journey Concert.
Much of the audience were obviously Pop Journey fans, and when they started the concert with 3 old Journey songs you could tell the younger "Don't stop Believing" crowd didn't know what to think when they played 7-8 minute instrumentals.
If you like "Old" Journey, don't miss this show.  If you can't go, google Neal Schon Journey Through Time.  There are  a lot of videos on line of them playing last year.

SUP General / Re: Great article on one of SUPs most amazing athletes
« on: November 29, 2018, 09:59:34 AM »
In July of 1980, while travelling and skiing throughout New Zealand, I stopped in Wanaka and skied Treble Cone for several days.  Two things stuck out from those few days.  The first being that the road to the ski area was crazy scary.  It was basically a switchback goat trail, one way in the morning and then one way down in the afternoon.  Back then, they would close it for an hour at lunch to clear off any cars that could not make it up.
The second thing, and important to this story, was that there were no cliff or danger markers anywhere on that mountain.  Some of the best back country skiing in the world, served by lifts and T Bars.  I skied off a few cliffs unknowingly.  On the last day, I skied off of one and landed on top of a river that was completely covered in snow.  I broke through and fell into the river, which was not raging.  Soaking wet, I yelled for about 15 minutes.  It took awhile for my buddy to find me.  He thought I skied down the mountain, but then saw the large hole in the snow.  I heard him yelling back and told him to be careful not to break through.  He used his ski tail to figure out where the solid snow was.  I was about 15' down and was able to throw my skis up to him.  He used the straps to tie together two ski poles and I was able to reach the basket of the ski pole and climb out.  It was a long and cold ski down the hill, further exacerbated by the fact that in the fall I pulled the front binding off one ski.  It was down in the river and forever will stay there.  Not the worst fall I have ever taken, but definitely the scariest one, at least until my buddy showed up.
We have a surf trip planned for Australia in February of 2020 and part of that will be taking my wife to New Zealand.  Wanaka will definitely be a stop on the way to Queenstown.
With everything that area has to offer, it is no surprise that Annabelle is that good at multiple sports.  It is really a beautiful place.

Gear Talk / Re: Suggestions on 2 SUP Travel Bag
« on: September 05, 2018, 08:03:02 AM »
You need to be careful with roller bags.  There is a lot of added weight to rollers.  Hawaiian Airlines has a 50 lb limit and 2 board limit per bag.  Check weight limits on whatever airline you are flying.  I could not get an 8'5 and an 8'0 together in a roller bag with bubble wrap and some cardboard protection, with paddles, to be under 50lbs.
Vitamin Blue custom board bags made me a great 2 board travel bag, that would work.  $275.
