I was on a fishing charter last Saturday and it goes a whole lot farther than 200 yards.  It's all over the ocean surface for a few miles.

Before you go branding "Zoner" you should know that down here in SoCal we call the slow driving mini-van people who stop in the middle of the PCH while looking at maps Zoners.  It's all the people from Phoenix and Arizona escaping the heat.  Zoner isn't exactly a compliment ;) in this neck of the woods.

If the cops are there for "safety" then wouldn't this be a better endeavor for lifeguards who are actually are there to rescue people?  If they don't have lifeguards then reallocate this $$$ to them.

Can you imaging the lifeguards down here with this rescue drill:  (1) see person in distress; (2) grab my torpedo bouy; (3) grab my 45 auto; (4) rescue distressed swimmer; (5) if that damned swimmer resists rescue then cap him... Ridiculous.

This is just more intrusion by Big Brother in my mind and a complete waste of $$$ by the local police.  The patrol boat is all they need.

Colas,

For us people still stuck with the Imperial System math and conversion is just a way of life.  I wish we would get with the metric system already.  Last time we tried it was in the late '70s and it was a bust.  Too many stubborn people.

The easiest way for us to to just convert our lbs to Kilos by dividing by 2.26 (adjusted for salt water).  Then the math is easy.  200 lb/ 2.26 you get 88.5 Kilos.  So if a board, wetsuit and paddle weigh 10 Kilos then you would need a 98.5 liter board for neutral or 1:1 buoyancy.

This sounds about right for me since I like a 150 liter board currently which is around 1.5 times neutral buoyancy which I've often heard is good for intermediates.  I'm not sure I could ever get to 1:1 or would even want to sacrifice that much glide for it.

5
Tim,

Your current board would have a buoyancy of around 203 lbs.  If it weighs in around 15 - 18 lbs then you are definitely at the 1:1 ratio.  That's sick!  I'll bet with a wetsuit on that board will sink too.

6
Cardiff,

You obviously have the same "cat like" reflexes as Tim with those wicked boards.  Just to feel how turning a short board feels again I had to actually go surf a short board prone style last swell.

BTW, with displacement, you can have your ankles in the water but it's still floating you.  When it sinks it means you put weight on it and it continues to sink to the bottom of the ocean.  That's where the hard math comes in as bodies mostly float and act against the sinking.

I would try to add to the dark matter bosun theory but I don't have a clue about what moving 3 mph forward does to help the board plane and counteract the sinking.

I think we need PonoBill to measure this with his instruments and give us a better answer like his "physics based" paddles.

Let's hope the SW swell shows up, although rumors of SW swells down here in the flat summer are usually greatly exaggerated.

I think this is how to think of it:

One cubic foot of salt water displaces 64 lbs. of weight.  That means that a board with a volume of 160 liters, like my Naish Nalu 10'6.5" has a volume of around 5.65 cubic feet (28.31 liters per cubic foot).  This means the board will support 362 lbs of weight before it sinks.  You then have to take away the weight of the board which is around 22 lbs. so this Nalu supports 342 lbs before it sinks.

From this math we should be able to say that a guy that weighs 200 lbs probably needs a board in the range of 180 liters which I learned on which would be able to support 407 lbs!  So the ratio for a beginner seems to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 5:10 on displacement measured in the same units.

For Strand Leper's boards a 100 liter board would support around 226 lbs and after you subtract the weight of the board that thing will float only around 200 lbs more or less (I don't know what those weigh).

I don't know how much Tim weighs but if he's 175 lbs. his ratio is more like 9:10 which has got to be crazy hard.

Sorry about the math... My daughter was watching "My Little Pony" on Netflix and it drove me to some 12 year Glennfiddich and internet surfing.  So, I could easily be wrong but I think I'm in the ballpark.

I think you are confusing volume with weight.  The volume measurements for boards are in liters which is a measurement of volume like a gallon in the Imperial system.  Think X cubed, or W x L X H.  Weight would be measured in Kilograms or Pounds, and is pretty just how much force gravity asserts on your mass assuming you aren't SUPing on the moon or a Higgs Boson particle becomes disinterested in you.

I think it's kind of confusing too.  I think we should start talking about about buoyancy or displacement instead of volume.  Although, I think the displacement method might also be kind of useless for a board that is completely submerged because then you have to figure out the displacement of the human body on the board too which varies greatly as we all know.  But, since most of us don't ride sinkers there's a huge body of science already proved up on displacement measurements and it would be very useful to know that Board X will float 300 lbs before sinking.  Once it sinks though, it's a big nightmare as a fat guy, or stout as I like to call myself, is more buoyant than one of those uber-athletes with 3% body fat who sinks.

I'm sure PonoBill could concoct a reasonable new formula for this problem.

Good advice by Outsidewave.

I forgot to add that you REALLY need to learn to make the paddle your friend.  A standard reflex for new people to SUP surfing is to lift the paddle up to try to balance.  The real maneuver is to PUT THE PADDLE IN THE WATER and use it as a "third leg" to balance with.  I had to pay attention to keeping my paddle in the water for balance and it's finally second nature.

Also, try to keep some forward momentum at all times.  If you are having problems standing then take a few paddles on your knees to get some forward momentum and then put your paddle flat on the board in front of you with your palms down and jump to your standing position with both feet simultaneously, while still keeping your hands down for balance.  Then stand up, with bent knees and start paddling immediately to gain more stability.  I swear this is just like "popping up" on a surf board.  The sooner you are standing and can dig the paddle in the water the sooner you will gain your balance.

Yup, keep going.

That being said there are times where the ocean looks just as choppy as usual but it's way harder to balance.  I find that two different swell directions, NW and SW mixed with an onshore wind and high tide where waves rebound off the beach is a combo that knocks me off my board down here in SoCal.

Wow, this is definitely a separating the wheat from the chaff argument.  I fortunately was raised by a real life cowboy on a big cattle ranch in Oregon; he was my step-dad and I love him dearly.  He taught me the meaning of tough and it's not all about fighting; it's about getting cattle back into the pasture when they break into your neighbor's wheat field during a thunder storm at 3:00am while it's still raining; then bailing out all the "wranglers" from jail on payday after they had too much fun and landed in jail after beating up the local Sheriff.  Before that I was born and raised in Oahu which is hardly utopian.  I now live in North County San Diego and love it.  BUT, I will say that I'm very sad at the state of affairs in this country now when it relates to personal responsibility.  It doesn't just end with your own personal responsibility but with keeping society civil.  Sometimes that means that Stoneaxe has to step in to break up a problem with douches in the parking lot (Kudos by the way), other times it means you paddle in and yell at the fisherman that toss lead weights at people.

I notice that it's the Canadian that says run!  The SoCal guy says talk it out...  I don't know how many of you have actually been presented with a situation where there is no other option but self defense, i.e. violence.  It's part of this world, quit pretending it doesn't exist because it does and you damned well better be able to defend yourself and family.  I call this whole trend the "Wussificatio of America".

If you think the corrupt cops or park rangers will help you then you are delusional.  I tried as hard as I could not to chime in on this thread but I just had to.  What happened to the America I grew up in?  Does anyone still remember when ANY adult could tell kids to quit throwing rocks at cars or they would grab them and take them to their parents?  Now you would get sued.  I don't care because I still keep my law license active just to fend off the idiots and I win all the time.  It keeps the playing field even for me.

Man up America!

I love this food debate of SD.  There's no loser's here; just all of us that get to eat at these places!  I love the North Park poster as that place is totally different and cool since I first knew it in the early 90's.  I love the OB comments and all the usuals from around town.

I'll throw in a couple more:

Best Bloody Mary = Shakespeare's on India Street

Best Bay Front Deal = The Fish Market.  Yeah, there are the cheesy parking meters here but I've been going here for over 15 years from when I walked there from a glass tower downtown.  It's got absolutely amazing fish, it's right on the water, and is also next to the new Midway Carrier Museum which is really pretty cool and visitors love.

Hey Tim,

I'm glad you got out today!  I was at the D Patch this morning and the Cardiff in the afternoon.  Crappy waves, big chop but still fun :)  No client days are good days!

Did you see the South Swell starting to fill in?  I think I was seeing it at Cardiff and in front of my place a Bone Yards before the sun went down.

I think I'll be doing Dawn Patrol tomorrow.

Stay Strong Bro!
