way to better yerself, bill, so glad to hear it!  and that you've been able to stand on a board.  good thing you didn't take me up on that 'ski or you'd be doing like i do and pining for the better ol' days.  and sometimes i'll try to stretch my legs out and get a few tooties over but it sure ain't the same when you're sitting down.

go get em, my friend!

Random / Any San Diegans here been to TJ for dental work?
« on: January 21, 2020, 05:38:54 AM »
Anyone here have any experience w/ dentists in Tijuana?  The three I've seen recommended most often elsewhere are: Baja Dental, Washington Dental and Bartell Dental.  But maybe there's someone else you know of?

Sadly, I need to have a ton of work done -- so much that the doc I saw in La Jolla thought it best to give me a dental plan and price for only the 1 most immediately needed procedure, out of about ten, lest I bowl over from sticker shock and die right there on the spot, not an unlikely happening at my medicare-using age.

That first procedure: ceramic crown, at $1360, with likely need of core build up, at $278, for a total of $1638, which in itself nearly did me in. And, like I said, that's about 1/10 of what I need in all.

So: TJ.

Thoughts? Recommendations there?

Thanks!

hey bob:

have you given any serious thought to riding or at least trying a waveski?  it's all i can do now, and i'm having a fairly good time with it, even tho some days i'll only catch a wave or two.  i'm in san diego but i did leave my old infinity waveski with a friend in RI if you want to give it a go.  it's of the longboard style and i think might float you.  twas made for a paraplegic before i got it.  think about it!

Random / How long is your ride to the water?
« on: November 13, 2019, 09:59:41 AM »
When I lived in RI, it was 10 minutes or less, perfect.  Now that I'm in San Diego, it's 20 minutes there and 30 min back ... and I'm unhappy about it, though I know I shouldn't be.  But it did get me to wondering -- how long does it take the folks here to get to their go-to surf spot?

xl fits just right now.  hopefully, won't feel too big after it gets wet.  tiny waves at the moment, but i might wear it tomorrow to give it a test run.

ended up getting this from amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/ONeill-Wetsuits-Mens-Hyperfreak-Green/dp/B07GZ7N8BC/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=O%27Neill+Wetsuits+Men%27s+Hyperfreak+Comp+Vest&psc=1&qid=1570993939&sr=8-2

i bought both L and XL and found that they run extremely small, so i'm keeping the XL.  both were from amazon warehouse.  if you want the L, it'll soon be back at the site, for 75.  the XL cost me around 80, but it had a small rip in one of the seams, so amazon refunded me 25, bringing the total cost for this total cheapskate to $55.  i like!

near as i can tell from the o'neill website, this is the gooru replacement.  fits great and can do everything i want.  very low-key, too, which is a big bonus to the kind of shy flower i am.

thanks, all, for helping me out w/ my search!

re the gooru -- how is it when you're sitting down and, say, leaning forward?  is it long such that the top pushes up against your chin?

so, i need an impact vest to wear under a wetsuit, one that's short enough that a/ i can sit w it on and b/ still use a waist belt for my leash.

the kind folks at tc surfski kindly sent me this one to try out but it's just too much bulk for me: https://tcsurfski.com/product/nelo-pfd/.  front panel is 2", back panel is 1.5"

hey, bill: how does your vaikobi measure out?
hey, beasho, or others who own one: what about the gooru?

i've also been looking at the liquid force wakeboarding vests, based on positive youtube commentary, but i still don't know about length and thickness.  https://www.wakesports.com/collections/life-vests/products/liquid-force-z-cardigan-comp-vest-tropical-2019?variant=12744411414551

thoughts, all?

yes, i know i could go with the vaikobi on the outside but i just can't deal with the bright coloring.  now that i'm stuck riding a buttboard, aka a waveski, i'm already enuf of a freak in the line up as it tis.

first time out with the waist belt and the first time i had to bail, i wound up with the leash around my neck.  got it undone before the next pile of white water headed my way.  now i've got to figure out how that happened and see what i can do to prevent it from happening again.  i know folks don't like coiled leashes but perhaps that might be a better option or at least one i should try out.
