Random / What's in your snorkel?
« on: June 08, 2017, 11:33:45 AM »
I've been trying some snorkeling on my SUP trips. One day I forgot my snorkel but my friend I was with had an extra one and offered it to me. As we were gearing up for some snorkeling I was getting ready to put my mouth to the mouth piece when I (thankfully) decided to look into the snorkel first and guess what was there....a dead mouse!!!! UGHHHHHH!!!! I almost threw up!
So I'm wondering if anyone else has found anything disgusting in their snorkel and what was it?

Whitewater and River SUP / White Oak River?
« on: April 10, 2017, 07:18:26 PM »
Has anyone paddled the White Oak River (Coastal NC)? Thinking about taking a trip there. I've heard there's some beautiful paddling there but I'm not really sure what to expect. Thanks for any comments!

SUP General / 120 rule?
« on: March 19, 2017, 07:31:31 PM »
What is your opinion about the 120 rule of thumb (you can ditch the wet suit when the air and water temp combined equals 120 or greater). I MUCH prefer warm (ok, HOT) water, but as far as just safety goes (not necessarily comfort), do you think 120 is enough? I found this article recently about the 120 rule: https://www.boatus.com/pressroom/release.asp?id=1256#.WM8-uvkrI2w
I had just been thinking about this because of the warm weather we had a couple of weeks ago. It was about 70 degrees outside which got me itching to get on the water, but the water temp is still around 55. Two days later it was 25 degrees colder outside and the water was still 55. BTW, I'm not talking about surf SUP, just sound-side lazy relaxing SUP. Even though 70+55=125 I still wouldn't have risked it without a wet suit. Would you?

If you could only SUP one place for the rest of your life, where would it be?

SUP General / When did you learn SUP?
« on: February 28, 2017, 07:36:38 AM »
I'm curious. When did you first learn SUP? What got you interested in it to start with?

I'll start. I started in my late 20's. A family member bought a used paddle board and asked me to try it. I immediately fell in love!

Do you have a waterproof case for your phone?

Unfortunately not. I should have invested in that. I'm putting it on the list for my next trip!

What a great day yesterday in St. Thomas. Actually, we took a ferry to Water Island just to the south of mainland St. Thomas and went paddle boarding. There wasn't a whole lot to see because we couldn't go very far because of the Christmas winds (we wanted a relaxing day, not a workout). However, we did see four sea turtles! They swam beside us for quite a while. Absolutely beautiful. I've been diving with them before but never paddle boarding. And the others in my party had never even seen a sea turtle in the wild so it was a great day! Unfortunately our camera was dead so we didn't get pics. We still have a few days to get pics though!!

Random / Inspiring SUPers
« on: January 03, 2017, 03:50:04 PM »
I ran across this article: http://goodnewsfl.org/surfers-for-autism-raises-awareness/ today and it reminded me of the Surfers Healing event that was at Wrightsville Beach, NC this past August. It's an organization that takes kids with autism surfing. It was an amazing and very moving event. If you've never attended one it's definitely worth either attending or even volunteering. Anyway, that got me wondering if there's something like that in the SUP community. I was really proud to find that my home-state of NC has a paddleboarding event to raise awareness and funds for autism
https://paddleguru.com/races/StandUpforAutismWPAPaddleboardRace2016. Also, I found an autism FITT club. It's so inspiring to me that children and adults with this condition don't let it get them down. These folks don't make excuses! I strive to be like that.

SUP General / Good SUP articles or books?

Does anyone have any recommendations for either good articles you've recently read about SUP or good books? I'm going to have some time in the air soon and want to stock up on stuff to read.
Thanks!

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Saint Thomas

Hi Everyone, I'm headed to Saint Thomas in a few weeks and am wondering if anyone knows of good places to SUP? Either surf or more low-key is fine. I'm pretty much a beginner to SUP in general so I won't be catching any huge waves. We'll be staying near Water Bay (I added a blue pin-point marker to the area on my Navionics mobile app so you can see where we'll be on the island). We will have a car but I've heard nightmare stories about driving there so the closer to Water Bay the better!
Thanks in advance!

SUP General / Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
« on: October 25, 2016, 11:35:41 AM »
Hi Everyone,
We are headed to Puerto Rico next week for 11 days. Super excited! We'll be staying near Rio Grande. We will have a car so we can check out some of the SUP destinations that I've read about on here, but I was wondering specifically about Rio Grande. Does anyone have any suggestions for that local area (since I'm sure we will have a couple of days where we don't feel like driving).
Thanks!

SUP General / Art of convincing
« on: September 29, 2016, 05:28:33 PM »
I love SUP but my partner in crime (kidding about the crime part) doesn't really like it all that much. He can't put his finger on why he doesn't like it (he loves kayaking, surfing, sailing, etc.). Does anybody have any ideas on how to convince him to join the SUP party?
