I reserved the one bnb I was looking at.  Ended up being about 400 for two nights.  Now just hoping to find someone to split with.

Not bad if you get up early. But... get up early!

This morning I did start thinking....I may find a parking space, if I try to park at 4am.  😂

Right now I'm thinking about booking an airbnb that is near the causeway bridge.  It will cost me like $370 for two nights total if I stay by myself.  I may book the condo and then still see if someone needs a place and wants to split the cost.  But then even if I'm solo there, it's still about half the cost of staying at the Blockade.

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but I just found out I finally got the time off work approved to be able to race at Carolina Cup.  My original plan was to get in on a house rental along with a bunch of Midwest paddlers.  But since it took so long to find out I got the time off, that rental is now full.  So I'm trying to figure out where I'm gonna stay.  It looks like the Blockade is now wanting you to book 3 nights or more.  I only want to stay two nights.  I'd like to find a roomie or roomies to either share a room at the Blockade or in a BNB rental.  Is anyone in the zone also looking for a roomie for fri and sat nights at the Carolina Cup?  If so please message me.  I'm really not trying to spend $700+ on a hotel. And I don't want to stay in Wilmington at a cheaper hotel, because I can't imagine how hard it would be to find a place to park on race morning.

Gear Talk / Re: Pro box twins/ventral installer near Clearwater, FL?
« on: July 02, 2018, 09:28:53 PM »
Thanks Larry!  Is that his personal cell, or the shop number?

Also I was curious, does it depend on my board and my stats (height/weight), etc as to which twin fins and what size ventral I'd want?  I'm presuming Tony sells the fins along with making the conversions.
Yes for safety go ahead and share here stats, Height which relates to Torque on the paddle stroke, Board length with width and yes like Burchas explains condition of water paddling. Mahalo, my friend and Welcome to the Allison Race Twin Movement with now a few Thousand happy paddlers.

I'm 6'2", 175 lbs.  My primary board I want converted is a Sunova Allwater Faast Pro, 14'x27".

Primarily, I am using it for flatwater racing, mostly in lakes and reservoirs, maybe a couple rivers.  Not too bad of chop/wake, but for some of the races, the water isn't closed to boat traffic, so they can kick up some wake.  My home reservoir is known for wind, that can kick up some chop if the wind runs the length of it.  It seems most of the races I'm entering have between 1-3 buoy turns.

What I'm looking for is an improvement on stability and glide, and better handling of side chop.

The other board I'm thinking of converting is a 14'x26.5" Bote Valhalla. For that board, I'm mostly just looking for stability.  It's a fast board but very tippy for me right now.

With where the stock fin box is placed on the Sunova, after the conversion, would that box still be able to be in place, or would the placement of the new center fin box mean the old one would be removed.  I know the center is more forward in your system, I'm just not sure how much forward it is.  I'm just curious if I could always go back to my current single fin setup if I wanted to.  Though hopefully I'll like the 4 fin so much that I wouldn't want to run my current setup.  BTW, I'm actually really liking using the 7" Stinger on my Sunova right now.  I'm currently paddling better than I have yet in my two years of SUP.  My Sunova/Stinger combo has me about .5 mph or so faster than last year.

Anyone have contact info for the guy in Nashville, TN that does the pro box ventral installs?  I have a Kentucky race next weekend, and could side trip to drop my board off, and then pick up the board on my way to my Florida trip.

I've been thinking about getting Larry's system installed on one of my boards, and I'll be on vacation in FL next month.  I was wondering if there's any shops near Clearwater that install The twin/ventral system?  It would be nice to get that work done while I'm there.

That's a nice board.  A little thinner than I think I'd want, maybe.  But I'd love to try it out if only I wasn't so far away.  Though I'd want to add the pro box twins to it.

What is your weight?

I just got my Allwater board a week and a half ago.  I've not tried the Ocean, so I cannot compare.  They do look so close it's hard to tell them apart except for color.  But if your intention is to just do a lot of downwinding, then I'd say go with the board that the manufacturer intended for that, the Ocean.  They cost the same, so I'd say that's the best bet for you.  The reason I got the Allwater is because I wanted a board that could handle open water conditions, but also didn't make me lose too much in the flats.

The only other suggestion I'd make is don't buy the board based on width.  Instead buy the one that has the right volume for you.  I got the 27" thinking the wider would be better for stability (my balance stinks), but now I think it might be more volume than I'd rather have for my weight.  I probably could have gotten the 25" and had the same stability.  I currently feel like I'm not even taking advantage for the board being a dugout, i.e. I'm riding higher than I thought I would.  But since I had to order it online, I couldn't try out the different widths before buying.  Sounds like you have the same problem.  Maybe talk with the Sunova people, or with whatever shop you are thinking of buying it from, and try to get their recommendations for which one will fit you better, based on your stats and experience/skills.

I'm 6'2" and 173 lbs.  I don't think it's as much that I'm too light, as that these boards have a lot of volume

Yeah I waited until I got home from the Carolina Cup to add the extra padding.  I got these strips of EVA foam off eBay (in packages of four strips), and apparently the consistency of color between packages isn't quite there.  But overall, I like how it turned out.  And it ended up being cheap as hell to do.  The hardest part was getting the curves right, around the existing padding.

This being my first time, and my seventh race period over the last 1.5 yrs, I'm doing the Harbor Island race.  Maybe next year the Money Island, and then hopefully the Graveyard eventually.  I have almost zero experience in the surf, so I will have to work up to the graveyard.  Though after my race, I do want to try out getting in the surf a little bit while I have the chance.  I don't find surf in central Indiana.  😎

I get my new board (Sunova Allwater Faast Pro) the day before the Carolina Cup, and I plan on putting some pieces of padding on it.  Hopefully I can do that before the race.  Like the OP, I want some padding further back for when I step back on the board.  I got a bunch of basically 1'x3" strips in black and blue, and I'm gonna make a thin blue line pattern with them.  I think if I don't mess it up, it will come out looking nice.

Downwind and Racing / Carolina Cup first timer questions
« on: April 14, 2018, 05:07:25 AM »
This will be my first time at the Carolina Cup.  I've got my room reserved at the Blockade Runner, and I think my truck is just ok enough to make the trek from Indiana.  I pick up my brand new board the day before the races.  What things should I know to make my CC experience as smooth and fun as possible?  How does the board storage work at the host hotel?  Can you take your board in and out of storage as you please on Friday?  I get into town Friday, probably around 4-5pm.  I was thinking I would check in, then go pick up my board.  I know, since I've never been on the board or even one like it, that I want to get a couple hours practice in before it is stored for the night.  Do I want to get my practice in before I try to put it in the hotel's storage, or can I pick up my board on my way into town, and store the board when I first arrive, and then get it out after a few and practice?  Any other advice from those of you who are veterans at the CC?
