General Discussion / Re: How many layers of glass to fix a buckled sup?
« on: November 29, 2023, 12:12:02 PM »
Thank you! I wound up adding a 4th layer of glass before seeing these replies, which probably does create a stiff point in the board, hmm. I'm going to keep telling myself that since it's near the middle of the board it can handle it.

So glad a friend saw the crease before I rode it again. There was only about a 2 inch section of the crease visible outside the deck pad, and a friend said "hey you know your board is broken?" Doh!

My beloved old pre-Nalu Naish buckled on top near the handle.

The bottom is fine. I'm wondering how many layers of glass people think I should use? I'm up to 3 layers of 6oz.

Love this board and want to make sure to add enough strength.

And I found this:

130 liters, looks like I'm going to be doing some swimming.

General Discussion / Any info about this board?

I just picked up this sexy board today, wondering if anyone has any info about it?

The person I bought it from guesses it's from about 2012. It's super pristine, far too pristine for me, ha.

Dimensions are written as 10' x 23" x 29" x 17 6/8" x 4 1/8"

Sure is purdy. I'm hoping it's a good replacement for my beloved old Naish Nalu that was 10'6" x 28" (the older narrower model). I loved that board but I recently snapped it and I stalled out on the repair. Hoping this one is a similar nimble feeling longboard.

That was an old Nalu, a 10'6" x 28". (The later ones are 30" wide). That narrowness was a bit much for my paddling skills at the time, and it was a bit frustrating. But just when I was starting to love the board I snapped that one too. I brought it to a surfboard repair guy who took my money and promptly ghosted on me, ha. Oh well.

I recently got that same old design 10'6" x 28" Nalu and it's my main board now. I can't imagine how I considered it tippy, it feels rock solid to me now, what a difference learning to brace makes. And I'm probably 5 pounds heavier than I was then (about 215# or so now I think). But I don't ride that board on big days anymore since I think it's too fragile. I have no doubt it could handle surfing bigger waves from a shape point of view. I super super super love that board, a total longboard, and it's slowly teaching me to cross step, which I've meant to do for years.

I randomly also have a 10'6" x 30" Nalu and I keep that for beginner paddlers, which it's great for. But I really wish Naish would continue making their narrow longboard shapes.

Here's a post from me after I first got the Nalu 6 years ago, and then a followup from me last year:

Awesome, almost the same dims as an old Amundson I used to have and super loved. That's the board that made me fall in love with SUP. Before that I had a Pau Hana that was a bit like riding a sheet of plywood if the plywood had ridiculously thick rails. I almost gave up on SUP when that Amundson came into my life, and I started riding it at my local (norcal) heavy wave spot. I was blown away by how well it handled waves pushing doh. I snapped it though, and that was before I knew how to fix boards. I've been missing that board ever since.  Pics of that board attached.

I just picked up an 11 foot Gerry Lopez Surftech, it was on Craigslist for such a good deal that I couldn't resist.

My friend picked it up and I won't have it for probably another week, but I'm wondering if anyone has any info on it?

I don't know the dims beyond that it's 11 feet long.

Here's the 3 pics I have:

Thanks. Super psyched to try it. Of course now there's the traditional days on end of 20 knot onshore winds and/or no swell that follows every one of my board purchases.

Here in Northern CA we went from an absolutely epic early season to weeks of wind swell at best. Argh.

Purchased! It sure is gunny on the nose. Very squash tail though. Speaking of esoteric boards I also have the Jimmy Lewis Bombora and Son of Bombora, it'll be interesting to see how this compares.

A Jimmy Lewis Mano came up on Craigslist near me, it's exactly like this board:

I'm not seeing a lot of info about this board online though. Guessing it was discontinued awhile ago?

Any thoughts on how it rides?

I'm about 6 foot, 210 pounds, surf in Northern California and enjoy big surf.

Awesome vid. Any theory on what that SUP is at the 3:50 and 7:00 mark? Brutal over the falls on that 2nd ride, but damn what a ride it was.

Great thread! I love guns and love surfing them in their element here in northern california, and wanted to give the 12 foot Jimmy Lewis Bombora some love. I have both that and the 12' psh, and while I love the psh, the jl is my go to when it gets big. The psh feels a bit more cruisery slow, doesn't blast through sections as well, and just doesn't feel as "elegant" to me. Hard to describe. There's a few critical differences in the shape, dims below. Could definitely just be my fin setup though. My JL is one of the earlier models and it's single fin only, and I ride my psh as a 2+1. I don't mean to bash the psh, I love it too, but the jl has a big advantage: it's still in production.

I also have the Son of Bombora, which I like too, but the 12 is my go to when it gets huge because I'm a wuss and the SOB doesn't have the same long and lean feel. And I just love the drop on the 12. I love everything about that board. I could hang it on a wall and just stare at it. But I hate carrying it!

Should mention, I'm about 6' on a good day, probably about 220# on a bad day.

PSH 12' Gun
Length: 12'0"
Width: 28 7/8"
Thickness: 4 3/4"
196 litere

Jimmy Lewis Bombora
Length: 12'
Width: 27.5
Thickness: 4.5"
Volume: 165 liters

I keep meaning to do a photo shoot comparing the shapes.

Well ha, I stumbled on this old post of mine when looking for info on this board, and since it's the first google result I thought I'd update it with my current thoughts.

I wrote the above about 5 years ago after having a bunch of problems with the 28" width. I think the words of the seller were always haunting me, apparently it was his daughter's board and he was sure I couldn't handle it. And just as I was starting to get the hang of it I snapped it in two. A funny sidenote is that I brought it to a board repair guy who took my deposit and promptly disappeared. Oh well, when this one snaps I can now fix it myself.

Anyway, about a month ago it popped up on my local Craigslist again and I picked it up for $600 in new condition with a leash and bag (whoo hoo!), and it has quickly become my favorite board, at least in small summer surf. Really fun to work on cross stepping, and has a much more longboardy feel than the 30" wide version of the same 10.6 Nalu, which I randomly have access to. Just night and day board feel.

Anyway, moral of the story is that this same board that was giving me so much trouble 5 years ago now feels rock solid stable to me. And I probably weigh 10 pounds more than I did back then. And I wish there were more narrow longboard SUPs!
