SoCal / SUP racing training group in Marina del Rey
« on: March 16, 2017, 03:53:31 PM »
Hey LA area paddlers, my name is Michael Kelley. I'm a SUP racer and instructor from Santa Monica. I'm starting a
Tuesday morning SUP training group that meets at 7am at Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey. After a short
warmup we'll head out for an hour tempo paddle. We'll practice drafting, sprinting and buoy turns. You just
need to bring your race board and PFD. The best part is that it's Free!
You can sign up at: https://www.meetup.com/Santa-Monica-SUP-Fitness-Training-Group/events/238472440/
or just show up ready paddle hard. Hope to see you on the water. Michael. supcoach.net

SoCal / Re: Looking for SUP racing group in west LA area
« on: August 19, 2014, 04:17:04 PM »
If anyone wants to join me, I do a 4 mile race pace flatwater paddle on Wednesday mornings at 7am leaving from Mother's Beach. On Saturday or Sunday mornings at 8am I do a 6-8 mile ocean paddle launching from Tower 26 is Santa Monica and heading north towards Malibu.

SoCal / Looking for SUP racing group in west LA area

Hey guys. My name is Michael Kelley. I'm looking to hook up with a SUP racing group on the westside of LA for training paddles.
I'm pretty new to SUP racing coming from a background of competitive cycling and running.
I live in Santa Monica and do ocean paddles locally and flat water training in Marina del Rey usually in the mornings. I'm open to meeting
in Malibu or South Bay if needed. You can contact me at: 1507info@gmail.com  Thanks!

Gear Talk / Re: need advice on how to grip a slick paddle shaft
« on: August 13, 2014, 09:52:00 AM »
I had the same issue and started using surf board wax. It worked OK but it also gummed up and got all over the deck of my board (I tend to fall off a lot). The solution I found was
to spray a 12" section of the shaft with a light coat of Monster Paint. Tape off the section to be sprayed and wrap newspaper around the rest of the shaft. Then use 220 or finer sandpaper to rough up the section. Then spray 1 or 2 coats of Monster Paint on the area and let dry. Take off the tape and newspaper and your'e good to go. This might be too rough for some people but I like it. This technique was recommended to me by someone from Quick Blade.

Gear Talk / Re: Naish Javelin LE 12'6x24
« on: August 05, 2014, 02:50:02 PM »
I started SUP racing last year and also bought a Naish Javelin LE 12'6"x24. I'm 5'8.5", 145lbs with a surfing background and I find the board fast but challenging (especially in the ocean). While I can paddle with power on dead flat water I found the board to be frustrating in a mass start race with the chop coming off all the other boards. I've since purchased a 14'x25" Infinity Dart and although it's only 1" wider it's much more stable (and fun). Please don't tell my wife but if I were to do it again I'd get a more stable board like the 404 or Infinity Cutthroat.
