not only cheapo brand are poorly made, some big brands are also poorly made.
Looks can be deceiving until one day you find out how its made and whats inside that skin :o
Yeah I have a board that's not premium ingredients, and another board that picks up dings if you look at it the wrong way. But $100 for a whole board, paddle, not to mention pump for the inflatables, it just blows my mind. And they look like epoxy boards, not the vinyl and foam wave storm jobbies. I'm tempted to order an inflatable just to see what it could be.

SUP General / Re: When Sea Lions Attack
« on: December 04, 2017, 08:52:24 AM »
Used to see them all the time when I sea kayak guided on the west coast, from Alaska to Baja to Chile, they and the cormorants where always around. They were like big puppies in the water, always splashing and going for maximum attention. Seals are mostly more low key, and kind of sneak a peak at you, then quietly recede back into the water, where the sea lions are going for a bit of intimidation. Or the sea lions would be passed out in a sunny sheltered spot in the water, with a fin sticking straight up in the air, and from a distance hard to tell that big fin belonged to. One late afternoon in Chile, with the light already getting dusky, rounded a corner on a small point with maybe a 12 foot steepish cliff type shore, and all of a sudden these big black boulders started rolling down into the water. Took me a second to figure out they were sea lions hauled out, spooked by the group, and heading quickly for the water.

Those 2005 Legacy turbo wagons are a bit of a unicorn, to me at least. I'll never understand why people prefer the current bloated Outback to something like that 2005 turbo wagon, just astounds me, it's essentially the same size inside and everything. I had a 2012 Outback with a 6 speed, and it was such a poor driver, I got rid of it when I found myself trying to figure out how to lower it and add a turbo. Hard to find a decent sized wagon anymore, everything has morphed into the generic crossover. If Subaru still offered a decent turbo wagon I'd currently be driving one, I'm too old and want more comfort, space, and utility than a wrx, so no more Scoobys for me.

Had an 02 WRX bugeye, ie a little silver wagon with a turbo and stick, solid rack up top could tie all kinds of toys onto it. Had tons of fun in that thing, used to love smoking bmws off the line on my morning commute. Had my license revoked at least twice, three tickets in a year in Massachusetts and they suspend, until I found a traffic lawyer who was good at getting tickets dismissed.
Took me a long time to get competent at driving it, ended up in a few ditches from driver error early on in my ownership. Would have benefited from a few autocross courses but never got that organized. The last few years I owned it got everything dialed in well, upgraded wheels, tires, and suspension. Could drift it pretty well at that point. Rode like it was on rails until it would start to get slideways, broke traction but was predictable on where it would exit and line back up. Could initiate turns and donuts in the snow using pretty much just the throttle.
My wife absolutely hated it and the body started to rot out. Had also turned into a bit of a rattle box under my ride hard and put away wet modus operandi. The performance suspension, low profile wheels and tires, and aftermarket pipes were exhilarating, for about 45 minutes at a time, then mental fatigue would start to set in from the harsh ride and noise. Was always kind of stuffed into it as well, not very comfortable, and not much space inside Eventually traded in for a 2012 Outback with a stick, which I disliked, only kept for a year. Now drive a soccer mom car which can't get out of it's own way, but is extremely comfortable, and I'm probably good with that until some type of midlife crisis. But if Subaru offered a mid sized wagon with a turbo and stick that was slung low, like the Levorg wagons they get in Europe, I'd buy one tomorrow.

Very cool. Hope it comes finished with some tikis, a fire pit, and an exterior wet bar. I hope you get many miles out of it.

SUP General / Re: Peeing in your wetsuit.
« on: October 01, 2017, 09:06:19 AM »
Heck yeah I pee in my wetsuit, that's why they all smell faintly of coffee.
When I was a sea kayak guide in Patagonia, we frequently practiced the golden arc, where you get as close to one side of the boat as possible, pinch the tip to build up pressure and arc it over the side, then shake it out in a bilge sponge. Only problem is my pillow, which was just my long underwear crammed into a stuff sack, always smelled faintly of coffee.
The white water guys claimed they took it one level further performing the "golden lasso" while river paddling.
Then there was my buddy who, when we'd get stormed in and have to spend a lot of time in the tent, would use his Nalgene bottle as a pee bottle. The first clear morning he'd  rinse it out in the ocean, fill it up in a nearby river, and keep going like nothing had happened.

Been using the Doc's pro plugs for awhile, like them whenever my head might be underwater fairly often. I keep a few sets around, one pair in my lifejacket pocket, another in my gear bin, and maybe a pair in one of my car back pockets where I keep sunscreen. The clear ones are really hard to find if you drop them.

A few years ago, we surfed in Baja during a Humbolt squid die off. The beach was littered with thousands of dying and dead squid. They were all roughly the same size as this one shown.

We finally had to move camp because of the smell.
I've seen the same thing down in the Baja, the coyotes seemed pretty excited about them washing up on the beach.

You should check out the new inlet in Scituate, pretty fun sand bar out there, would be perfect for fourteener surfing.

I'm in the middle of a geriatric whirlwind of failing relatives, hope things level out soon, so I can start to get some water time and get my sea legs back.
