Gear Talk / Re: Red Paddle Co Elite 14' 2017 for big guy
« on: March 17, 2017, 07:15:52 AM »
I am pretty close to your size and I paddle the Red Paddle 12'6" Race board and have no problems with it.  I have not tried the 14' Elite but I tried the 12'6" Elite and it was ok. I would not paddle it in anything but calm waters however.

If anyone is interested, the Red Paddle Co. Demo Tour will be in the Denver area July 13.  If you are curious about the Red Paddle boards, come on out.

Here is the link to sign up for it.

Note, I am not affiliated with Red Paddle Co. I just love their boards and I think they are the best inflatable sup board available.

I do not know if this helps but I heard that Red is coming out with a new material for their boards in 2016.  It is supposed to be lighter and as strong as the current material that they use.  I have not used the Red 14' board but I did try the 12'6" Race board and liked it a lot.

Check out the Kaholo SUP board kit from Chesapeake Light Craft.  The kit and plans look pretty good.

I just got a new compressor for my truck and it looks like it will work pretty good for my isup.

It is the Smittybilt 5.65 CFM Air Compressor
http://www.amazon.com/Smittybilt-2781-5-65-Universal-Compressor/dp/B004K25GMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428586114&sr=8-1&keywords=smittybilt+air+compressor

It is a little bit more expensive then others but it inflated my Red 12'6" Explorer from about 8 PSI to 18 PSI in about 5 minutes.  I am going to test it out this weekend and see how long it takes to inflate it from 0 to 20 PSI this weekend.

I am going to be in the Tampa Bay area at the end of this month I will be bringing my fly rod and SUP board.  I was wondering if anyone knows of any decent places to fish in the New Port Richey area?  I was thinking of launching at Robert K Ress Memorial Park (Green Key Beach) and fishing around there.  Has anyone fished around there?  Any suggestions would help me out a lot.

Thanks

Gear Talk / Looking for a paddle for my wife
« on: July 21, 2014, 07:21:32 AM »
So, I got my wife to try stand up paddling and she likes enough that she wants her own board.  After testing out a bunch of boards, she decided on the Lakeshore Betty board in passion purple (lavender).  It is a nice board and she likes it.  Now my problem is that she wants a paddle that matches the color of the board or at least one that the blade compliments the color of the board and is carbon fiber.  She does not want one that has pink graphics. I have been looking all over the place for one and have not found anything that she likes.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can look? I am trying to keep the paddle cost no more than $350.00.

Thanks for the help.

I had a chance to try it out last weekend and I have to say it is not that bad.  The interface is easy to use and you can read the screen in direct sunlight.  As for it's tracking capability, I would give it a 4 out of 5 accuracy.  I paddled about 4.5 miles and the device reported pretty close to that figure.  I am not sure what the accuracy of the GPS is but it is close enough for me.  The SpeedCouch count your strokes and it showed around 2200. I have not idea if that was accurate since I have nothing to compare that figure to.

The one thing that I did not like about it is when I stopped for about 1 minute to drink some water.  The tracker paused and did not resume when I started paddling again.  I had to push a button to start the tracking again.  I did not notice this happened for about 10 minutes of paddling.  I can understand it paused with not activity but it should resume when the location changes or gyro records a change. That is a pretty simple programming task to do.

The other thing that it does not do is allow you to download your session information to your computer when you get home.  It would be nice if it saved your route as a GPS NMEA sentence also save the rest of your session information.  If I had the GPS information, I would be able to upload it to Google Maps and look at the route that I took. Then with the rest of the information, I log the information and track progress during my paddling season.

Would I recommend this?  Sure, if you want to spend $300+ for it. Otherwise, I think there are other devices out there that are better and cheaper.

If anyone knows a cheaper device to use that does not depend on a cell phone, let me know.

Paul.

I have looked at this recently and it looks pretty good but a little pricey.  I hope to demo it this weekend. The biggest drawback I see with it, is that you cannot download your session information to a computer.

SUP General / Re: Any great spots near Colorado Springs?

I have heard that the Colorado River near Glenwood Springs is a great place to paddle.  I have not been there but a friend of mine has and he said the river is Class I and II around there.  If that is true, I am not sure but he did say the scenery there is fantastic.

Bakes,
I am not sure what is close by to you but you can take a drive down to Pueblo Res. and paddle some flat water there.  I live up in Denver and paddle a couple of lakes here and you can also paddle the South Platter Rive when the flows are high enough here in Denver.

My paddle is about 88" also and I use a bag made by RareForm.  They are made out of old billboards.
