The Shape Shack / Re: A quiver for Cloudbreak and fiji
« on: August 19, 2016, 11:21:58 AM »
I think that your rockered out board will be surprisingly fast there, the waves just have a lot more curve and inherent speed than most places.

My experience there (prone surfing) is that you want a board that will get in and turn down-the-line right away, not require a drop down the face - these reef-pass waves start fast, the farther up the reef you go the faster the sections are.

In hollower waves traditional pointy nose boards seem to do that better, more rail can be engaged into the curve of the face without catching. This would apply to Cloudbreak, Wilkes and Restaurants; Namotu left and swimmingpools are more typical fun waves and your squared off round pin would work great there.

If you are planning to charge bigger (2x overhead+) cloudbreak or wilkes, bring a longer gunnier board along to get in early and scratch over the cleanup sets.

Also, watch lots of WSL heats, it will give you a much better idea of real conditions out there than any edited surf video.

Have fun!

Nice pics, and looks like you had a great session.

It also looks like you are getting some front-side air off the lip.

Were you worried at all about damaging the board?

I've heard that SUPs are not really built for landings (the way windsurfing boards are), or do they just mean much larger jumps?

I've only taken it out windsurfing a few times, but the decks on Sunova boards are pretty durable so I'm not worried about the deck, more worried about the mast bashing the nose in on a fall.

Where a typical custom board will develop foot divots after 5-10 sessions, all my Sunovas are like new on the decks. I wouldn't recommend proper wave jumps though, so yes, it's true that most SUPs are not built for hard landings and continuous pounding like a windsurfer is.

Gear Talk / Re: Quad rear fins
« on: March 04, 2016, 12:12:03 PM »
Good advice here... I don't have a Flow yet, but I expect that Burt provided the correct fins for the intended use, I'm guessing his intention is to use the quad setup for extra hold and acceleration in very steep/barrelling waves and to use the thruster for most allaround conditions.  If you want to loosen it up as a quad, I'd recommend just trying out some smaller trailers. I think he puts the trailers near the rail and forward on that board, that normally indicates flat sided or 80/20 foil.

Quads are not all designed the same, there is a big range of trailer fin placement that will affect what fins or foils you want to use as well as the feel of the board. In general, the further back and closer to the stringer the trailers are, the more you want a 50/50 foil and the more smooth and carving the board will feel (closer to a thruster).
The more up and near the rail, the more you want an asymmetric foil and the board will feel more loose and swivelly (closer to a twin but with a lot more hold). As TW says, toe also comes into play, with more toe indicating a more asymmetric foil.

I must have caught it right--assuming Indicators is the break out past the lighthouse thing. I got a few that went to the sand. I assume it helps that I got there early and stayed all day until the crowd got funky.

See you there next year, assuming the PPG runs again. Probably come down even if it doesn't.

Oddly enough, Indicators is at the middle of the point... The far outside is Middle Peak (primarily a left), along the cliff by the lighthouse is the Point and then the Slot and then into indicators partway down the point, followed by Cowells on the inside cove.

No, it won't really plane unless on a wave, too much tail rocker. I'm only riding the SUP in sub planing conditions anyway so it doesn't really matter to me.

Thanks everyone so much for your replies and helpful feedback/intel!

Creek, you confirmed what I was thinking that the 8'10 should feel solid for me the way the 9'5 feels for you.

Jonah,  I'd contacting you soon, about trying your 8'10, thanks so much for extending the offer! there's nothing like like being able to try before you buy, makes a world of difference.
I have a feeling I'd be calling JK the east coast soon... exiting stuff! :D
Ok let me know I will be out of town for a couple of weeks in February

Those shots were taken a Davenport, just north of Santa Cruz. The strapless thing is interesting, feels really weird at first, but once you start to think about surfing the board like a SUP and not a windsurfer it's all good, just have to keep moving the feet around

I have an 8'10" Speeed available for demo in Santa Cruz if you can make it down here. It does pop over whitewater really well and catches waves pretty easily. I've ridden it in DOH + and it surfed good, no bad habits.

Anyone who is thinking about the new blocked off nose SUP's should look at the
Windsurfing Stoke Videos thread
AWT Quatro Desert Showdown on Vimeo
http://vimeo.com/71824112#t=0

Check out the cut back at about 2:08 min... in slow motion you can see just how the pulled in nose outline -snip-

I haven't been on the Zone much the past several years, so apologies for digging up old posts.. but I came across this and that's me at 2:08... Man, that makes me want to go back to San Carlos next summer!

That was a really good board on the wave, very short though and a bit of a pain going back upwind unless powered up.

Some shots from a windSup session a couple of months ago on my 8'5" Sunova Speeed:

https://sail360.smugmug.com/Windsurf/2015/Aug-01-2015-wind-sup/i-VNjtq5L

It's a ton of fun and a great session saver when it's too light to windsurf & too windy for good surf.

It's possible, I was out until around 5 I think.. There were a few sups out at Cowells when I came in, but probably weren't visible on the lane camera.

Just got back from the Lane, middle peak was huge and breaking way out the back, I surfed indicators on the 8'10" Speeed, it was pretty fun despite the chops and current. At the top section of indicators I was paddling non stop just to stay in place.  Tomorrow should be fun!

Sunova SUP / Santa Cruz demo update - Saturday!
« on: December 11, 2015, 01:42:47 PM »
Hi all, it's been a long time since I've posted on the Zone.. Martin and I will be doing demos tomorrow instead of Sunday given the weather forecast. I'm planning on being at Privates around 1:00 and hanging out all afternoon for the low tide. If the swell sticks around and privates is looking tough to get out, we may move to Capitola. I'll keep this thread updated if there are any changes

Boards we'll have on hand:

9'1 Acid
8'10" Speeed
8'5" Speeed
10'6" Style XL

as well as a couple of surfboards
