Gear Talk / Coreban EZ vs. Focus Smoothie 10-0?
« on: March 22, 2016, 11:05:15 AM »
I've got a couple boards I need some feed back on if anyone can offer an opinion..  The Coreban EZ (10x34, 198 litres) and a Focus Smoothie (10x32, 183 litres)

Both will suit my needs, but I'm wondering about build quality and reputation.  The Coreban is the core layup, and the Focus is the "wood" .. I believe the Coreban is about 27 lbs while the focus is 25.  They're pretty much the same price.. So I could pretty well flip a coin but I'm sure there's a Zoner or two with 2 cents to give me...

Flatwater and Touring / Beauty November day...
« on: November 04, 2015, 05:17:47 PM »
Stellar day here in "the great white North".. 19c and sunshine all over the place.
So I ended work early, and loaded up Bonnie's new Stiletto.  Always better to beg forgiveness than seek permission...  ;)

My local lake was glassy and empty.  The beach was even devoid of geese, they've already headed south...  In my haste to chase the dwindling daylight, I left my phone dry case at home, so no on water pics... Just this one - the lake, the board and my Shaka-ing shadow..

Gear Talk / Jimmy Lewis Stiletto

Just thought I'd share a couple pics of my (wife's) new JL Stiletto 290.  It's a 12-6 x 30" work of art...  And it paddles pretty nicely too! (for a 12-6.. )

Downwind and Racing / Muskoka River X
« on: September 13, 2014, 05:09:26 AM »
The longest single day paddling race (so they claim). - 128k's, and it has to be completed in less than 24 hours.  Canoes, kayaks and SUP's.

Bart de Zwart is in it, I guess is was a good "cool down" from the 11 City race last week.  I'll be waiting sometime tonight at the last check point to cheer him on.
You can track the race live here.
http://muskokariverx.com/live-race-map/

I live less than a k away from the last check point where the Muskoka River empties out of Mary Lake (my usual paddling lake).
Note that the "Muskoka Sup" listed in the race is not me. It's a local paddling shop owner who won the SUP division last year when Bart failed to show.

Betcha Bart is sorry right about now - it's only 7c, and a high of 12c for today.  Though the water is still 17c or so.

Gear Talk / 3 piece paddles ... Length of sections?
« on: April 26, 2014, 08:48:39 AM »
Anyone here have either a 3 piece Werner or Naish (Makani vario)?
Are the sections equal in length (ie., 81" / 3 = 27")?

It would be nice to have a paddle that I could fit in checked luggage to avoid additional and/or oversize charges.  Obviously there's trade offs such as weight and performance etc, but looking at what some airlines are charging, I think the cost would be pretty easy to amortize..

Thanks

Flatwater and Touring / Late afternoon Quality Time.....
« on: August 01, 2013, 04:49:24 PM »
It's always nice when one can share some time paddling with your S.O.  Between kids, work and everything else, it seems rare when we can squeeze in a session together..

The other night we loaded the boards on the car and drove to the small village of Dwight, just on the outskirts of Algonquin Park.  We parked at the beach on Lake of Bays, and paddled across the bay to the Oxtongue River (great name ...!) we had just enough time to head upstream to a little waterfall.  Most of the meandering river is a protected preserve... So it seems like you've stepped back in time .  The river was filled with beavers, herons and lots of turtles.   I took a few pics with my phone - not great - but worth sharing.

We got back to the car just as the sun set.   Perfect ending. ;D

Just saw this - check out the offerings in the 14' range.  Though I think they should make all models available in the Cocomat construction, not just carbon. Larger paddlers take note of the 14 x 29" open water board.   ;)

Man, this addiction is way too easy to feed with so many pushers around every corner 8)

Flatwater and Touring / Sunny glassy after work paddle...
« on: June 26, 2013, 05:20:35 PM »
Thought I'd share a typical paddle I do most evenings after work ...today was nice and warm for a change  (30c) - we've had a cool wet spring.  Summer is finally here!

The parking lot at the beach was still crowded at 6:30

I paddled out around the first two islands, stopping to check out the cool patterns in the rock walls.

The wind picked up just enough to be refreshing, but not much help paddling.

By the time I got back the beach parking was slowly emptying. Nice night for a paddle.

Gear Talk / Ace look-a-likes?
« on: May 28, 2013, 07:18:54 PM »
Just saw a pic of Travis Grant's DC-NSP board - it sure has similarities to the SB Ace.
Also there's a pic of a "Fanatic" at the Sup Cup in St Maxime France that looks even more similar - especially the tail.
