Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Large wing, how big?
« on: December 14, 2021, 09:00:47 AM »
Updating my wing quiver, currently riding Echo 7/6 and Slingwing V2 4.  Settled on a Matador 5 & 4 for the middle and small wings but debating on the big wing.  I'm an intermediate/advanced rider, 205 lbs so there a fair amount of me to get flying on an Armstrong 5'8' with 1850/1250 foils in the Seattle area.  My main debate right now is do I need something bigger than a 6?  The Matador 5 got me flying the other day when there was barely a whitecap on the lake and wing was barely flying in the lulls, not unlike the conditions that I'd pull my 7 out for; so then I started thinking the Matador LT 6 might be the biggest wing I need.  The big wing is my session saver, especially on those marginal summer days.  The appeal of a light and simple 6 is strong right now, but we're in our windy season.  So the question is with current, powerful wings, is a 6 big enough?

SUP General / San Clemente SUS rental recommendation?
« on: April 03, 2016, 09:36:17 PM »
Headed to San Clemente this week and may have some time to fit in some surfing.  Any suggestions on where to rent a performance stand up surf board for a couple days?  Thanks.

Gear Talk / Anyone remove the gloss finish on a Werner Grand Prix shaft?
« on: August 27, 2013, 11:45:43 AM »
I know people have done this on other paddles but has anyone sanded off the gloss finish on a Werner Grand Prix? I've tried a number of grip options and none are what I'm looking for. I don't need much just a little extra and I think removing the gloss finish might be the trick.  I'm pretty hesitant to sand it down though, just wondering if anyone has experience with these shafts. Thanks.

Downwind and Racing / Deck pad tail bumper?
« on: March 16, 2013, 08:06:49 PM »
Thinking of using some old deck pad on the tail of my raceboard as a bump drafting pad. It's inevitable that you get bumped in the drafting line while racing. Any reason not to do it?

Gear Talk / Werner Grand Prix, what size blade?
« on: March 03, 2013, 06:26:08 PM »
I'm going to give the Werner Grand Prix a go for racing but I'm on the fence on what blade size to get. My current paddle is a Ke Nalu Maliko (85"), which seemed like the right size in their line.  I'm 6'3" and about 195 lbs riding a 14; competitive and in shape.  Any comparisons to what I've got now would be appreciated. Using the paddle for training, racing, and down winding.

SUP General / Maui advice needed
« on: December 03, 2012, 08:34:03 PM »
Wife and I are headed to Maui in mid March, our first time to HI.  Hoping to do some SUP surfing while there.  I race a bunch but I'm a beginner surfer.  Trying to figure out where we should stay on the island. Ideal setup would be somewhere I could get out to surf in the morning and then spend the rest of the day hanging with my wife. Also looking for a SUP friendly break that would be good for my surf skills. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Gear Talk / Compare: Werner Grand Prix vs Ke Nalu
« on: June 15, 2012, 11:42:10 PM »
Want a new race paddle.  I'm looking at the large blade Werner Grand Prix and the Ke Nalu Molokai.  Can anyone compare these?  Not sure that I'll be able to compare them easily.  Any thoughts are appreciated.  I'm 6'3" and 195 lbs in good shape if that make a difference.  Thanks for any info.

Downwind and Racing / Ohana 14 or M&M 14
« on: April 17, 2012, 12:57:32 PM »
Starting to think of getting a 14' raceboard.  Anyone had a chance to paddle the current version of these?  Probably looking at the stock glass construction.  I paddle a lot of flatwater to train and most races are generally flat, but also like to downwind but that be more of a secondary use since I'll probably keep my 12'6 around.  Any feedback is appreciated.  I'm 6'3" and 200 lbs.  Thanks.

Gear Talk / Focus Cali 12'6" Raceboard Season Review
« on: November 19, 2011, 06:33:39 PM »
So, felt like it was time to post my thoughts on the Focus Cali 12'6" raceboard since there aren't any reviews out there yet.  I've been paddling it since June, so I feel like I have a good feel for it now.

My background: Started stand up paddling last January on a NSP 11' surf-shape.  Picked up the Focus Cali 12'6" Raceboard from Motion Boardshop in Seattle in June.  I've been racing on the water for a while, rowing in college and racing whitewater canoes and kayaks for about 6 years. I'm 6'3" and 195 lbs.

Had some success racing the board this past season.  Won the first race I entered, 2nd in my class in Round the Rock (13 mi), and won Gig Harbor (10 laps of 1k course).  Raced some others as well, at no time did the board hold me back, it was the engine.

The board is 28.5" wide, fiberglass construction, not sure of the weight but it is lighter than other fiberglass boards I've picked up.  The price was definitely right too, $1300 brand new (not discounted).  The primary stability is decent, but the secondary is good.  Accelerates pretty quick, usually had good starts all season.  Decent flatwater speed, but really shines when it gets a bit rough.  Tracking was fine.  The next version has a more vertical, deeper nose so the flatwater speed might be a bit better, but the current version is plenty fast.  Talked to one of the owners at Round the Rock and it sounds like the shape is constantly being tweaked and not tied to a model year so each shipment might be a bit different.  Haven't gotten it out in real downwind conditions but the times I've been out in 10-15 mph wind swell it did just fine.  The winter winds have arrived in the PNW, so I'll report back on the DW performance.  Handles well for buoy turns.  Definitely feel that this is a great all-around raceboard and may be the best bang for the buck.  Planning on adding the 14' Cali for next season.  Both Motion Boardshop and Urban Surf carry these in the Seattle area.

Regional / Round the Rock pre-run this weekend (8/27-28)?
« on: August 23, 2011, 05:01:10 PM »
Anyone interested in doing a lap of the course a morning this weekend?  Thinking morning will have the lightest boat traffic.  Haven't done the race before but have been racing all summer.  Planning to paddle my 12'6" raceboard.  Let me know.

SUP General / Seattle area board repair?
« on: July 05, 2011, 11:04:14 AM »
So had some friends using my boards yesterday and one of them fell forward onto the deck of my Focus 12'6 Cali raceboard and punched a hole in it.  The are about 4 visible cracks through the glass around a spot about 2"x2".  The hole is about 2"-3" passed the end of bamboo reinforced standing area.  Looking for recommendations on who does repairs in the Seattle area.  I could probably fix it myself but would prefer a good looking repair, which I'm not confident I could pull off.  Any advice is appreciated, pretty bummed since the board is only 3 weeks old....  Thanks.

Downwind and Racing / Focus Cali 12'6 opinion/reviews?
« on: May 14, 2011, 07:58:07 PM »
Any one used this board? Local shop just brought these in, looks nice. Should be demoing soon but wanted to see if anyone had opinions already. Would be my first race board. Thanks.
