Foil SUP / Mounting my Takuma foil
« on: July 04, 2017, 01:31:56 PM »
I know it's been discussed, but I'm still confused.
How do I determine the foil placement?
Mast below rear foot? Is that while riding or paddling?
Help! Once placed I have about 4-5" of adjustment.
Takuma foil arrived on Maui yesterday and I'm totally ready to get it wet.
Board is a 9'0" Naish Mana that I have ridden waves with for years.
The Pacific is about 200 feet away!

Foil SUP / Has anyone tried this?
« on: March 15, 2017, 10:20:16 AM »
This looks like a great idea for mounting on an existing SUP. I am considering it for my Naish 9'0 Mana. I would use a large low aspect Kiteboard foil.
I do wonder if the mount might cause delamination.
Any thoughts or comments.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Come on folks - show some Aloha
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:16:53 PM »
Will be traveling to Kauai for a short trip starting next week. We'll be staying in the Poipu area. What is the weather/water temp like. Are folks strictly trunking it? Last time I was there in January was kitesurfing and many were wearing shorties. Should I bring one (shortie that is)?
I will also be renting, any tips on where to go apreciated.
Aloha,
Pat

Gear Talk / Another inflatable SUP
« on: July 06, 2008, 07:02:47 PM »
Has anyone seen/surfed the new inflatable SUP? It is being sold by West Marine and is made by Sevylor. It is named Samoa.
I wonder how it compares with the ULI. Anyone know?

I am curious about sail use on SUP. I live in a very popular windsurf area and wonder if I might enjoy sailing a SUP.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Maui Rentals
« on: January 25, 2008, 04:30:49 PM »
Hawaiian Island Surf and Sport was recommended to me last August when I was visiting thete. They were helpful to me as a novice and had a choice of a few different models and paddles. I rented a Jimmy Lewis 11' that worked perfectly for me.
I imagine there are more shops renting SUP's on Maui now but it was slim picking back then.
(I caught the stoke and now own a JL 11 and will be in the market for a new board soon.)

Sessions / Today in Northern Ca
« on: November 16, 2007, 08:15:55 PM »
Got out for a great little session this morning. Waves were waist to shoulder high. That may not be much for most folks, but perfect for my learning curve. I ride a Jimmy Lewis 11 and today for the first time I spent some time "in front of the fish" (that would be on the nose). OK I didn' t  get to hang any toes, but I was out there on the end of the board -yahoo!!!
I also worked on my paddle bracing and was able to save a couple of what should have been falls. Yahoo again! It is nice to avoid that low 50's water.
 ;D ;D ;D

Gear Talk / What's the difference - pros and cons??? epoxy/ polyester
« on: November 09, 2007, 08:12:07 PM »
OK help me out here, what are the practical differences between epoxy boards (like a Jimmy Lewis) and a polyester glass board?

I think understand the difference in the two types of resins, but what are the differences in the finished products - weight, cost, durability etc?

Technique / Nose Ride
« on: November 04, 2007, 08:54:34 PM »
Yesterday, I went out with the idea that I would see if I could nose ride on my Limmy Lewis 11'er. I have only been out 15-20 times and I am getting comfortable in small waves (waist to maybe shoulder high faces).
So I was riding along with a surfer coming up behind me so I decided to speed ut to give him some room. I took a couple of strokes and stepped farther forward to accelerate (not to nose ride). Like a good surfer, I was not looking forward and not at the board. I did not think about the fact that I was running out of deck pad. My brand new (unopened) bar of Sex Wax was still on the front seat of my car. My foot hit the slick board in front of the mat and I had a great surprise as it went out fom under me. Oops!
Quite a surprise - Other than wax any tips on nose riding?

SUP General / Travel tips?? Pismo Beach to San Simeon, CA
« on: October 18, 2007, 08:35:35 AM »
I have a day planned in Morro Bay in a couple of weeks. And I am stretching the trip to 3 days and taking my board. Anyone have suggestions for some nice SUP wave action? Nothing too big and fast as I am old and slow.
Any spots that I might see other SUPs?
Thanks,
Pat

Sessions / A nice SUP day in California
« on: October 16, 2007, 07:30:58 PM »
Check out this YouTube link for a short video of SUPing on Sunday. You can likely see that I am new to both SUPing and video editing.

Regardless, I had fun with both. I have to say the surfing is much more fun than the editing. But you know that already ::)

Sessions / Great Session this morning
« on: October 02, 2007, 09:09:44 PM »
Went out at Capitola in Nor-Calif today. Not spooky large, just right for me about 3' faces. It is a point break - nice long wave.
I was the only stand-up paddler among about a dozen mellow longboarders. It was very cool. Low stress - plenty of waves for all. Made a conscious effort to not take all the waves, sat down in the line-up, chatted with the locals. It's all good!
Think I'll go back in the morning! ;D

Technique / How do you turn?
« on: July 30, 2007, 12:50:12 PM »
How do you make major turns, like 90 or 180 degree turns to catch a wave?
I have only been out for four sessions and I have developed this. I drop one foot back a few inches, sort of squat down, and use big sweeping strokes across the nose of the board. I'm not yet too stable on the board and I imagine this looks kinda goofy, but so far it has gotten me around to catch a few waves.
Please share your techniques.
Thanks - Pat
