Classifieds / Wanted- Unlimited 18' +/- Race SUP
« on: September 23, 2022, 08:55:50 AM »
Got involved in a Triathalon with the 3rd leg being a kayak paddle.  They let SUP's race but I am not as fast on my 14' BARK as the EPIC V10's.
So I thought I would see if anyone has an 18' unlimited board lying around that doesn't get any use anymore.
Let me know what you have.
Thanks

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Puntarenas, Costa Rica
« on: July 05, 2017, 10:48:00 AM »
Looking for any info on board rental, surf spots and how to get to them in Puntarenas, Costa Rica.
We will be there for only 1 day, October 19, 2017.  Doing the Panama Cruise and this is a full one day stop, from 7am to 7pm.  This may be the only chance I get to surf Costa Rica, in my life.  Surf spots in that area are fairly well documented, its the board rental and travel, that I really need help with.  Doesn't matter if I SUP or surf.  Just want to get out in the water.

Hoping someone might know of a boat rental to take from 10-15 people out from the Redondo Beach Harbor, or other nearby harbor, to the area just off Burnout Beach.
My mother in law passed away recently and she grew up in Torrance, body surfing at Burnout Beach.  Her wish was for a memorial service with the family off the coast near Burnout Beach.  She was awesome, besides body surfing and water skiing well into her 70's, she used to race in the Catalina Water ski race.  Sorry to have her go, but it was really a blessing in the end.  She lived a great life.
Thanks for any help or direction you can provide.

Sessions / Caught inside at Silver Strand
« on: March 23, 2016, 09:07:10 AM »
I just had a nice trip down to SoCal, where I got to surf with my youngest down at Newport Beach and then this past weekend with my oldest at Silver Strand in Oxnard.
Shortboarded at Newport in the morning then had a fun mid day sup session at 31st Avenue.
Nobody out and fun waist to chest high waves rolling through.  Just a light swell those days.
From there we took the motorhome up to Ventura, where my oldest son and his family live.
Swell came in on sunday morning and we were up at 6:00am waiting for the light to paddle out on shortboards at Silver Strand.  Solid 3-4' over head and it was big enough that the high tide wasn't bad.
Wish I would have brought the sup that morning, but Neil is adamant about me not doing stand up at certain breaks.  Well we were the only ones out for an hour.  Waves kept getting better and better.  I had a couple nice lefts at the north jetty, that gave me a little more confidence and I paddled over to where my son was, which meant a pretty deep take off.  About 5 out at this time and all very good surfers, longboard and shortboards.  I took off on a mid size wave, about 1-2' overhead and it ended up closing out inside.  I jumped back on the board, duck dove through a wall of white water, to see the biggest set of the day come in.  Got under the first wave, but the second one hammered me. As I got back on the board, I saw my son taking off on the biggest wave of the set, right in front of me.  Amazing drop and then a little tail stall and pulled into the barrel.  Saw him come out and bottom turn and hammer the lip for a great finish, then I got annihilated by the wave.  I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.  I was in the perfect spot to see my boy get the wave of the day.
Later that morning, a tall sup surfer paddled out on what looked like a very short paddlesurf hawaii board, with lots of repairs.  Fun to watch him rip the beach break.  Wish I would have had my sup, but it was fun shortboarding.  It is just a lot of work.
The trip ended with my wife and I having several fun sup sessions at C Street, Ventura.
Wind came up yesterday morning early so we came home.
It was a fun trip.  Only got 5 days of surf over a 10 day trip, but 3 days of surfing with my boys.  Priceless!!

Anyone have these boards.  I wanted to see if the deck pad was as nice as it felt in the shop. It has a really nice velvet or felt feel to it. Any idea how to get one?

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Kazuma 8'0" Fugu review
« on: October 31, 2015, 11:17:13 AM »
So we have been here for a week and surfed every day ranging from waist high mush to beach break chest high reef action.  Came over with no board, and bought a Kazuma 8'0" Fugu off craigslist here on the island.  I was actually thinking about having a custom made before we arrived.  But waited too long and Matt said it would be done until the week we left the island.  I got lucky the CL board came up.  Got a great deal on it too, including a bag.  Board had no repairs or paddle marks.  Perfect condition.

The board is 8'0" x 30.5" x 4 3/8" at 115ltrs.  It is a custom board, with standard layup.  Weight wise I would guess in the upper 15 to upper 16 lb range.  It is light and much lighter than the 8'6" 115ltr Kazuma Carbon production board.  The surf has been off and on, which has been good to test the board. Matt says the board is the best beach break board made, and the waves I have been getting on the scattered reefs on the west side confirm this.  I am looking forward to taking this to Ventura and surfing the harbor and other great beach breaks near my son.
Its small, but the width makes it stable even in choppy conditions.  Staggered stance makes it easy to just lightly paddle around and stay stable in choppy water.  In "Maui" glass conditions it was easy to just stand on the board and wait.  In real glass I could go to a smaller board.  I am 5'10" 175 lbs.
The board doesn't have the glide that my 8'10" Kings does, but I had no problem catching mushy waves.  I couldn't sit outside, but I usually don't anyway.  On better waves the board paddles easily into the peak and takes off fast. I never once had the front rails catch, which happens on my Kings board, when I take off at a slight angle.
This board is made to surf top to bottom.  Its like my water ski.  Always hunting for an edge.  Bottom turns with some push behind me were great, even on the mushy waves bottom turns were good, but a bit of patience is needed.  The board rides best from the tail, and even on the small waves I was right on the back of the stomp pad most of the wave.  Foot movement was minimal on good waves and on mushy waves I needed to move it some.  But not much.
Working down the line, the board wants to turn, so I obliged and had a ball.  Very controlled and easily breaks the tail loose, when you expect it to.  I have the Kazuma quads in, which look identical to AM2's.  More swell today, and I will put a thruster set in.
I was looking for a board where I didn't have to move my feet much, and I found it.  I don't think this is a great big Kanaha board.  I would like something with more glide.  But for 2-3' overhead and under, this board will rip.  We still have 3 weeks to go, so I am sure I will get it into some size.
I will update as the weeks go on.

Gear Talk / Jimmy Lewis Super Tech 8'8" does exist
« on: October 31, 2015, 10:44:10 AM »
In Maui now and stopped by Second wind sports.  They got the first two Jimmy Lewis 8'8" super techs that came in on the last container.  So they do exist.  8'8" x 29" at 112 ltrs.
The shop owner also said that Jimmy will have a 9'3" super tech in the next container.  Dimensions and liters unknown.
I compared the shape and bottom contours to the stun gun.  More rocker and thinner.  The weight felt lighter than the 8'7" stun gun too!

Random / Robin Trower at Harrahs South Lake Tahoe
« on: July 01, 2015, 08:34:16 AM »
We were up at South Lake Tahoe, for the Race the Lake of the Sky race and I got a call from an old friend, who knew we were going to be up there.  He had 4 tickets to go see Robin Trower at Harrahs, on Saturday night.  I used to listen to Bridge of Sighs and Long Misty Days for hours in the 70's.  What a show!!  We had 8th row seats, right in the middle.  Robin Trower plays better than ever now.  Every song went into a blistering guitar solo and songs like "in the place", had long melodic guitar leads.  Absolutely one of the best shows ever.  Even my wife, who was never into the, as she puts it, dropping acid music, loved it.  Watching him be so into each note made each song personal.  He really poured his heart into that show.  As it was back in the 70's, he was backed by only a drummer and bassist, who also was the lead singer.  He didn't have the same voice as James Dewar (RIP) but still sounded great.

If you get a chance to see him, don't miss it!!
